Basically every time I go to use the zoom for any weapon (sniper rifle, DMR, BR, etc.) I sprint instead of zooming. Am I doing something wrong, or is the Green Thumb button layout broken?
What button are you trying to zoom with?
Classic Recon control layout doesn’t exist in Halo 5.

Have you checked your button layout?
I’m having the same trouble with the default layout. The zoom button (clicking down the left thumbstick) does nothing. I can change the layout to one that allows zooming on the right thumbstick and it works, and the new function on the left thumbstick does work (crouch I think) so it’s not the the left thumbstick on the controller doesn’t work. I’ve checked and it seems to be the same on all layouts that have the zoom on the left thumbstick, the button that is supposed to zoom does nothing.

Left joystick. I press it to any direction +click and it does nothing. On all button layouts.
The zoom refurs to increasing magnification while using a sniper. Are you thinking of Smart-Link? That by default is LT. If you have a sniper you can click L3 to zoom.
The Green Thumb Zoom refers to weapons with multiple zoom levels (Snipers).
BR, DMR is now LT on Green Thumb (The general revamped Zoom mechanics are collectively referred to as Smart-Link)

Tried the LT and nothing happened at all. 
Just look at the control scheme. Default is LT to ADS then L3 to adjust zoom.
get a sniper rifle, use the scope, to the left of the [4x/9x] is the button you push to change it.
