Nearly every week, someone says “the Assault Rifle needs a buff”. I find this confusing since it’s the strongest it has EVER been.
The real issue is that people are mishandling it, if you think the AR needs to be stronger then you need to learn how to use it.
The Assault Rifle is medium/close range weapon. That means you can’t cross map enemies with it.
Let me put it this way:
>> You want to be nearly in melee range if you want a guaranteed kill with it.
>> If not, then at least be close enough that your reticule is RED.
>> People will back away from you because they know that the AR can kill them if you get too close.
All weapons in shooting games are about Distance management keep your opponent at the easiest kill range of your gun.
Don’t try to out-DMR with a shotgun
Don’t try to out-shotgun with a sniper rifle.
Don’t try to out-snipe with a rocket launcher.
Don’t try to out-rocket with a boltshot.
AR vs DMR = AR wins (if you are in the appropriate AR range)
AR vs DMR = DMR wins (if you tried to cross map using a close range gun)
IN CONCLUSION:
The AR does not need a buff, you need to learn its range. Experiment in custom games.

The problem is most AR users dont use bumper jumper.
that makes them easy Bolt bait or are easily lit up by retreating DMR users
Agree completely. I said before in another thread that the AR is the best it’s ever been - I thought it was lame in Reach and Halo 3, and rarely used it then. IMO it’s actually a “proper” weapon now, and not one of those that you quickly swap for something else.
Also OP i have no scoped many a shotgun kids and bolted a few rocketeers.
A sniper is as good a weapon as you make it.
A bolt can counter any power weapon in its 1sk range if you are good enough.
some weapons have max ranges but many others can be the best if you are skilled enough.
Also as someone who uses the bolt shot every chance he can and adores boltshoting automatics users I will drop my bolt for an AR when I get the chance due to this formula.
Use pro v to ID the weapon they are using
stay mid range when facing bolt and jump
stay just slightly beyond melee range when anti DMR, otherwise DMR will melee you and then 1 shot you. The AR has a faster kill time than the DMR just out of melee range if fired full auto and aimed at their chest.
> Meh, I prefer the AR in Reach which could be used at all ranges.
You mean the one that needed 19 shots to kill and anyone with half an ounce of skill with a DMR can beat and medium and further? Even up close that AR sucked with the slower firing rate.
Yeah not fond of that one. The Halo 3 AR while ever so slightly less accurate could still reach decent ranges and only needed 16 shots to kill, the exact same as the Halo 4 AR.
I do like this AR, but I feel that the crosshairs should reset faster after you release the trigger so you can effectively burst fire it and not be completely screwed at anything beyond spitting distance.

AKA: Get -Yoinked!- by a Boltshot range/a Boltshot could do it better range.
> I laugh when people says it needs a buff. The AR is the best that its ever been.
“Better than it’s ever been” and “good” are two different things. Back when there were 2 DMRs/BRs on a map, the AR being bad was accepted because everyone had it. Now it’s better than it has ever been, but due to anyone spawning with a BR/DMR, it’s no longer competitive. I can typically achieve a 1.5-2 KD in a game (Slayer, not Big Team Slayer) with a DMR or BR, but with an assault rifle I only barely achieve 1 (due to the fact that many high profile areas are more conducive to mid-long range combat).

Of course I’m not aiming at the head though not moving around might be it.

I don’t aim to use the AR at short range. If anything I mainly use it at midrange, in short range I let them attempt a bleedthrough punch and let me kill them.
