Please do not base the ‘validness’ of this post by my grammar or spelling errors. I am dyslexic and simply cannot SEE the mistakes I make, but that doesn’t make my post any less intelligent.
I’ve played Halo actively since 2003 and know exactly how all games have been in multiplayer, so I personally think I know what I’m talking about.
I feel like people mostly say things that they only want to be added to game, which in the end would only benefit a minor group of people. What about the actual gameplay, the most important part of all games ever made and the ones to be made? So here are my suggestions to the title update, where I mainly focus on making the gameplay better.
1. Having full control of weapons in the options menu, I want this to go as deep as possible. I wouldn’t care if it would end up highly advanced, because you can always simplify the menu, with a simple or advanced menu.
The things I’m talking about you should be able to change are.
-Bloom. I can guarantee that everyone who has played this game online, has at one point been very frustrated or irritated by the bloom, because he or she hasn’t gotten a kill that they obviously deserved, but the opponent manages to kill him by spamming and eventually got lucky by the broken bloom.
What I want to add here is, that you should be able to turn it off and on, but also change the intesity of it. Shall it be very sensitive and expands to the maximum size instantly? Or be very heavy and only has an impact when spamming as much as you can.
Going in a fine detail to make it exactly how someone wants it will make everyone happy in the end, because everyone can have it how they like it. Now the matchmaking won’t satisfy everyone, but solutions can be made to the various of groups, and custom games will be a lot more used.
-Damage and shooting speed. Being able to change the damage and frequency of shots, of each and every weapon will make the game much better, because you can balance the shooting of the game exactly how you want it. Covenant vs Human weapons can be 100% balanced as an example. I’m not a fan of that combination, but hell, I bet many other would love it.
Imagine what the competitive communities can do with it, tournaments such as MLG, NGL and ECL will benefit from this, as the game can get the exact pace in the gameplay that everyone wants,
-Autoaim adjustment and changing what distance it is active at. I’m actually surprised this wasn’t added as early as Halo 2. Some might not like this point others probably just don’t understand it either. But what I’m going towards is that with the previous 2 paragraphs is it possible to make this game a spawn camping hell. Imagine how it would be with strong weapons and no bloom, it would be impossible to fight effectively of the spawn. With the possibilites to change autoaim, can you make the game so, it will split the good players from the bad. A good player will hit consistently and do better than the rest, while the not so good players will be at the lower end of the scoreboard. It decreases randomness dramatically and with an effective ranking system should you not worry to play against people who are much worse or way better than you, as everyone will be filtered out eventually.
-The timelapse from when you switch, pickup or melee with a weapon till you can shoot or melee again. This is one thing that sometimes annoys me. I know I am better than the person who I’m fighting. I melee him and line up my aim to 1 shot him, but at the same moment does he just melee me again, and the battle ended with the classic double melee. This is something that has to be fixed, it truly ruins the art of close range battles. I don’t know how many remember it, but in Halo 1 was there no lunge when you melee’d, so there was no such thing as running straight into a person and double melee him. Well it was possible with the BLB glitch, but even hitting both of them was difficult. It was amazing to see the best players do it, Rippon, Ogres and especially Walshy with the claw.
Or that I pick up a weapon, but it takes too long till I can use it and I just get dominated.
You’d might think this is hypocritical, but it is an issue I never witnessed in Halo 1 and 2, it was something that started in Halo 3, but wasn’t that much of a problem I could handle it, but in Reach is it just terrible.
-Blast radius of explosive weapons… Dear god this is a curse when another team has control over your spawns. Grenades basically have a way too big explosive radius, and pretty much make everyone no shielded on a rather big area. Some people have complained about rockets, I do agree to an extent. They have a good radius, but the killing radius is too big, I think you should be able to do damage at a big area, but not kill everything there even though didn’t hit that accurate.
The grenade launcher feels a bit weak, it takes skill to use, no doubt, but it gets really hard to use it effectively, I only witness the top players using it as a devastating weapon.
2. Player physics.
-One thing I’ve missed a lot in player physics options is that I cannot change the acceleration when moving. When a player like me who mainly plays gametypes with trigger weapons, DMR, BR and Pistol (H1) do I like how the outcome of a one to one battle isn’t only decided by who has the better aim, but also who has the better strafe. But in Halo 3 and Reach was the acceleration so slow that you had to change the player SPEED up to a minimum of 110% to have an effective strafe, but with a setting to change the acceleration only is it possible to strafe effectively even at low speed percentages.
-Fall damage. Some people want this removed, I personally do not know why? It was removed in Halo 2 from Halo 1. The first thing I did not like with it, was that during any battle could someone just jump of a cliff, roof or bridge with a huge drop and get away with it. If anyone remembers the 1 to 1 pistol battles on Hang Em High, is it easy to remember that those who tried away could only hide around a corner or a pillar, if they jumped down would they just die because the fall damage would weaken the player and he’d slow down, becoming vulnerable to shots and in most cases would be killed. If you chose to fight the player, would you probably still die, but managed to weaken a player and maybe assisting a teammate to get a kill.
3. Forge. Yes there are some things I definitely think could be added to it.
-Enviroment… I don’t like this steel and concrete like enviroment in almost every map I play, it gets too much of the same, it’s like I play in a newly made factory without any machinery. I’d love to see some other things added, something more colourful. The current colours are stripes on each object, and that’s pretty much it. What about grass, wood or urban enviroments?
-Even more specific coordinates when building, I sometimes want things to be 100% symetrical, but it isn’t possible it coordinates, and takes too long to go finger tippy with the manual controls. I’d be happy to see one more decimal added to the coordinates.
4. Theater mode.
This is one of the better additions to the halo games, but really lacks a few things.
**-**Being only able to see theater videos alone really killed it for me after games with friends. Those moments when someone pulled of a ridiculous play and everyone just wants to see it. You go into theater and watch it, but it isn’t the same when everyone is in the same lobby and get crazy reactions when they see it. It is something I really miss from Halo 3.
When we’re at this subject, why can’t there even be two in the theater on one XBox? It’s a very bad move, because when I want to go into theater has someone to log off to even start the film, and after that does he have to log on again… Now the dual screen in H3 theater wasn’t perfect either, I hated to have split screen theater mode, why not just see it in full screen?
-Options in the theater. Skip forward is really, REALLY missing! I hate it that I only have to fast forward to see something in the end of a gameplay, especially campaign replays.
Another thing is setting up camera routes in third person. Those of you who played Skate 2, probably remember the filmer pack that was released. You could zoom in exactly as you wanted, move the camera as you wanted, EVERYTHING. You let the movie play, find the place on the timeline you want the clip to start, place the camera where you want it, zoom and aim. Find the last position, and do everything again.
You can do it multiple times in the same clip to have more specific angles during the clip.
5. Matchmaking.
-Ranking system. The arena ranking system is way too complicated, you had to play atleast 3 games in one day to be ranked, and it was reset once a month I think. I barely remember because I didn’t like it. All I want is a system that filters out the variously skilled players. The 50 system in Halo 3 wasn’t functional either, I could get a 50 in about 2 weeks, and could get destroyed by other 50s, but also do the exact same to other 50s… What I want is a system that is specific enough to split the various of groups.
-Searching options. What I would love to see is more specific searching options. We got to search for people with certain attitudes etc. Why not add something to search for people only in one area, so Europeans can search for Europeans, it is less likely to lag badly for the players due to the close distances. Intercontinental gaming gives atleast about 100 ping (rounded number).
People best like to have options. I don’t want to play a game where I get thrown into a situation; “here you go” play like this and be happy. I would simply leave it if I wasn’t satisfied with it. I’m not satisfied about Reach, but I’ve played Halo since 2001, and got rather active in '04, so it has a special place in my heart, and that’s why I post this, and I hope that my points will be considered.
Note: Remember I’m dyslexic and I don’t bother giving a tl:dr because there is so much to fill out it would take more than 20 mins to write it.
-Brooney
- Ability to toggle bloom off.
- Good ranking system. (1-50) But make getting a 50 more difficult then it was in Halo3.
- Slow the dmr’s fireing rate, slow it down by a small amount.
- Give us the power to watch a film with other people again, no more 1 person per film please.
- Add a setting where you disable your spartans ability to do animations, or make it so a certain button cancels your animation and just instantly kills the player being animated, so you don’t accodently animate someone in important games. (for example if you accidently start animating someone, you can just press x or something and it finishes your animation instantly.)
1: Bloom toggle off or on setting
2: Melee bleed through damage(Should be able to beat down people twice to kill them and if they are weak they should die not go no shields)
3: Nades, and rockets need to be weakened
4:1-50 ranking system (where #number parties match with other #parties)
5: Put a “Turn off melee animation” button.
- Remove Bloom.
- Add melee bleed-through damage.
- 1-50 ranking alongside the in game rating.
- Fix assists.
- Fix the playlists so they match party’s with similar sizes together.
1 - Remove or allow a Custom Games toggle for No Bloom.
2 - Add Individual Weapon Damage modifiers to Custom Games.
3 - Remove or allow a Custom Games toggle for removing the current no-bleed system on weapons.
4 - Allow Theater mode to be viewed as a party like Halo 3, instead of only one singular person at a time.
5 - Adjust or allow us to adjust via Custom Games settings the grenade damage and/or radius.
-
- Grenades currently are too powerful.
If you’re at half health one grenade on it’s own can kill you. So the overall strength needs to be reduced.
- Grenades currently are too powerful.
-
- Armourlock
If you get stuck you shouldn’t be able to activate armourlock to survive it and your shields shouldn’t be able to recharge which using armourlock.
- Armourlock
3)- Banshee
Currently the banshee is pretty weak in terms of it’s health but the banshee bomb as well as the flipping makes it overpowered. There should be a cool down regarding when you can flip, the radius of the banshee bomb needs to be nerfed and a small buff to it’s health.
-
- Bloom
Others have explained this well enough above
- Bloom
-
- Bleed through melee.
All I ask for is a good ranking system. Whether it’s Elo or Trueskill, anything would be better than the one now. Also piggy-backing off of that, make it so that teams of 4 only match up against other teams of 4, so matchmaking can actually be fair again.
- New armor!
- Better and faster ranking system
- No armor lock
- No bloom
- No AA’s, but make them pick ups
- Bloom: Either removed or a toggle option added to disable it, way too random and slows the game down.
- Melee: Add bleed through to health from shields.
- Ranking System: Add 1-50 ranking system, this is what people know the Halo Series for, and why people used to play Halo 2, Halo 3 so much (To get a level 50).
- MatchMaking: Add an option under Search Restictions for Party Size. Nothing is more annoying than matching a party of four when searching solo or get all solo players when partied up with four people.
- Grenades: Too powerful, reduce strength and make fuse slightly longer.
-
Remove Arena and add 1-50 or something of that equivilant to more than one playlist. Have the credit system be the sole way to rank up the military ranks still though, no must be a 50 to be inheritor EDIT: Guy above me is right Please add search restrictions or just matchs teas of 4 against each other
-
Either remove bloom or punish spammers way more while making the retiule reset a bit faster, no prefernce to either way I would just like to see spamming never pay off, without making the DMR’s kill time get way higher.
-
Go back to Halo 3’s melee system in terms of bleed
-
Reduce Grenade damage slightly
-
some AA rebalance, either remove the AL emp or do something to prevent its close range domination. The only reason Armor Lock is so low on my list is that I cant bear to play it and avoid any playlist with it in, and as long as there are still 4 or 5 armorlock less playlists I can just continue to avoid it.
Thanks for the TU 343
1. The Melee System
Why it needs fixing: The bleed-through effect.
Basically, what occurs is this:
Because melee damage does not bleed-through shields, two stages occur in the melee battle.
- The shields pops
- The next melee will kill both players
So. Let’s put this into mechanical terms. Let’s say that player A has 1% of his shields left and player B has 100% of his shields left. They both melee. BOTH players are now at 0% shields, and the next melee will kill both players simultaneously. So, as you can see, there is no sense in shooting the player when in close combat. Just double melee. This is a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER! Shooting should ALWAYS be the focus of any battle. And this system is simply unfair to the shooter. In a way, it penalizes him.
2. The Bloom Effect
Why it needs fixing: It adds no beneficial dynamic to the game and it doesn’t do what it was designed to.
It was designed to make using a DMR and the pistol more difficult and penalized spamming. But many studies of the game mechanic have shown that spamming is more effecting than pacing to even a great range. Only at very long ranges does it pay off to pace. Not only that, it only really effects the pistol and the DMR. Not what I would call a balanced approach to the gun mechanics.
3. Armor Lock
Why it needs fixing: Because it’s the dumbest idea Bungie has ever come up with.
It’s unfair and overpowered in so many regards that it is just impractical to keep in the game. Bungie has already removed it from many playlists. There is nothing fun or fair about temporary god mode.
4. The Grenades
Why it needs fixing: They are extremely overpowered.
This is an easy fix. Just nerf the damage or the radius. Simple as that.
5. Re-evaluate the Armor Abilities
Why it needs fixing: Most of them are unbalanced. It feels like the perks in MW2. Just thrown in the game because they were “cool.”
Nerf jetpack time, mainly. Some other minor tweaks. I think sprinting needs a “charge-up” time because it’s very unfair and frustrating to have people run away from battles after you are winning them. Stuff like that.
The one and only thing I hope that gets fixed in the title update is the bloom. Take it out or make it work properly. I think this is the main thing that people will post about in regards to halo reach.
Other than that I enjoy Reach with AA’s especially sprint.
Fix the bloom or take it out.
Thanks!
DMR bloom bigger but has faster reset
Ability to disable bloom
Bring back 1-50 for arena and mlg
Rocket nerf reduce splash damage
less auto aim with the sniper
-
Fix bloom on the DMR so spamming is worse than timed shots.
-
Reduce the time of Armor Lock and remove the ability to move the camera and immediately turn round while exiting AL. You’re “locked” in place so you shouldn’t be able to move your head and see behind.
-
Enable firefight spawns in custom maps. I’d love to see community FF maps.
-
Fix the sword through the glass floor glitch in Sword Base. Or make the glass floor destructable.
-
Can’t think of anything else at the moment.
Here is my only suggestion.
Make bloom OPTIONAL. This should satisfy all parties. Removing it completely is risky because nobody knows how the game will play, but adding it to the game customization options will be a win win. An even better scenario would be to make it so that varying degrees of bloom can be set in the game settings, or different types of bloom behavior. I know that’s asking a lot, but the way bloom behaves really does affect gameplay quite a bit. If that’s too much, just making it optional would be fine.
I’m sure other people have posted ideas/suggestions in here that you would love to implement as well, but the above is the only thing I am looking at. Thanks.

- No Sword Block
- No Sword Block
- No Sword Block
- No Sword Block
- No Sword Block
Melee bleed through, no bloom (or make it twice as big and reset twice as fast to truly punish spamming), 1-50 ranking system (any system that works with obj) , numbered parties match with other numbered parties (TO4 vs TO4 not TO4 vs 4 randoms), MLG a ranked playlist where you get matched up with people your own skill level.
Please
My suggestions in order of importance:
- Better True-Skill/Ranking System -
At the moment, it is almost impossible to play this game at even a semi-serious level. There isn’t a single playlist that I can go into and honestly say that most of the players are of an even skill level. It is very hard to get better at this game when the majority of player I play against are either much worse or much better than myself. A 1 - 50 ranking system would be ideal, but an improvement to the hidden true skill system would be fine as well.
- Armor lock -
In all honesty, this armor ability is a game breaker in its current state. Armor lock is a very gimmicky perk that allows player that have been outplayed in a gunfight to unjustly survive the situation. Its purpose is to allow teammates to come to the rescue of the player that uses it, not to allow that player to come out of armor lock and win the fight straight up. It lasts entirely too long. The shields should not be able to recharge. The EMP effect is the thing that allows players to win fights after coming out of armor lock. If other players come to the armor locker’s rescue, you shouldn’t be in a position to stand behind him and wait for a melee. Basically my proposed changes are: Reduce time to 4 seconds, no shield recharge, and no EMP effect.
- Bloom -
Bloom right now allows for spammers to win gun battles at short - mid range. Simple solution, make the bloom expand quicker. Also, making bloom expansion time a custom game option would be awesome.
-
Melee - The melee system currently breaks short game engagements. There is no initiative to use your gun in these battles since it is quicker and easier to melee twice instead of trying to perform a perfect 5 shot. This makes someone that has two shots worth of damage just as powerful as someone with full shields at close range. Obviously, this is broken. Another simple solution, add melee bleed through like it was in Halo 3.
-
Grenades -
In Halo 3, grenades were used to set up kills and contain/control the enemy positions. In Reach, grenades are so powerful that those two effects are nullified, and they are simply used to kill the enemy. There is simply not enough time to react due to the large blast radius and damage. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, grenades should function as they did in Halo 3.
Other: Reduce sniper damage on vehicles, reduce rocket launcher blast radius, make the hitbox for a headshot with the sniper rifle smaller, increase magnum clip size by two bullets, start with only one grenade as default or don’t allow grenade pickup (if damage is not reduced), add ranked and social playilsts (if ranking system returns), add in a new forge map with different skins and items, much like Sandbox in Halo 3.
Thank you, 343, for listening to the community. <3
