Your thoughts on forge.

I’m excited about this but I haven’t been able to try it out yet. Is it hard to use?

Super clunky compared to previous Forges, but that’s the price you pay for more options and a more sophisticated editor.

Idk, I’m already used to stuff like this since Far Cry 2-4, but I can understand why people are kind of frustrated. Forge used to be a very user-friendly and simplistic map editor and now it’s sort of walking the middle ground.

I can build a full-size bomber plane with animated propellers that flies over a burning forest towards the map and drops bombs all over it.

It’s okay.

The control scheme is completely different than before. Forget everything you ever knew. The root of the change is the decoupling of camera and object manipulation - not such a great idea, I’m thinking, but what do I know?

You’re gonna be moving around the map and grabbing things inadvertently and moving them inadvertently. You’re going to be welding objects, often without even realizing that you’ve done it. Then when you try to move one thing you end up moving half the map. The quick patch is to just lock your objects, but like everything else, that now takes way more button strikes than it used to. Just not worth the trouble.

Objects used to be “2x2 flat” and you just knew what that meant because you’d been doing it forever. Now objects are “12’ x 18’ x 4’” which has no meaning for a veteran. It’s just one more thing to have to re-learn.

If you thought the old building block palette was good, then you’re gonna love what they’ve done for 5. There are about eight million more objects to use, but of course, as with everything new in forge, this is a double-edged sword. Having everything in the world to choose from makes choosing that much more difficult and time-consuming.

In short, just try to be patient. It’s gonna take weeks, maybe even months, to get this thing down.
