Your thoughts on Forge in Halo 4 so far?

I’m guessing that some of you may or may not have seen this video? For those of you who have seen it, what are your thoughts on the new Forge system so far? For those of you who have not seen the video I’m talking about, please refer yourself up to the red text in the previous sentence. To be honest, I’m not really digging it so far and I’m going to explain why.

First of all, I would like to point out that the Halo 3 Forge system just plain sucked. In Bungie’s defense, they weren’t really anticipating that the community would want a map editor in the game series and Forge wasn’t really made initially for map making. They said it themselves in a Vidoc for Reach. However, the community worked with what it had available, and we managed to fashion amazing, and I mean amazing maps out of simple crates map scenery and a few teleporters on maps like Sandtrap, Foundry, Sandbox, Avalanche, etc. Even with all of it’s flaws, and lack of a coordinate system and snaps, rotations etc., the Halo 3 Forge system was still better than the Halo: Reach Forge System. Why? Because it had variety, whereas the Halo: Reach forge system lacked it drastically. Please hear me out before you go “NO NO NO NO NO!”

With the Halo 3 Forge system, you could go onto any map of your choosing, and you would find such a variety of gadgets and pieces that you could place on the map, each scenario was different. For example, compare Foundry to Sandbox. Both were specifically made for the community so that we could create our own maps. But each basic map and item palette had variety to it. You had different pieces with different textures for different scenarios. Foundry was an industrialized, urban warehouse thing where the theme of Sandbox was a barren Desert with ruins and -Yoink-. What I’m trying to say is, Halo 3 didn’t restrict our Forge limitations to just one map. We were able to work with all of the maps. Halo: Reach restricted us to just one map, Forge World. And it had only one main theme. Boring, dull, gray forerunner structures. And after watching that video above, I fear that this is what 343 Industries is doing to us again. They are restricting us to just one map (which looks oddly enough like forge World again).

To be honest with all of you, I’m OK with being restricted to just one map to work with, so long as the pieces on the Forge palette have variety. Halo: Reach’s Forge World palette did not. If 343 threw us back into Forge World for Halo 4, I would be thrilled so long as they fixed the Z-fighting glitch that Halo 3 and even Halo: Reach suffered from, and so long as they allowed for the use of weather FX. I’d also suggest that if this were the case again, that those of you at 343i reading this please throw in multiple textures for Forge pieces such as walls, ramps, bridges, vehicles, etc. this way we Forgers and players don’t grow bored when playing custom maps.

In conclusion to this ridiculously long post (I don’t even know why I bother I doubt the employees even care to read my posts), I would like to pat 343 industries on the back for their work on Halo 4 so far. I will admit I do like the way it looks so far and I plan on buying it. But please show the forge community some love. And for the love of God, if you guys are going to throw in Air Vehicles like the Falcon or the Pelican/Phantom, PLEASE ALLOW US TO RIDE IN THE PASSENGER SEATS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

They said in the video that there were 3 different pallets for forge. This could mean that there are three different forge world maps with 3 diffrent kinds of environments or maybe its just one map with three different settings.

I never really played forge, so Idc what they do with it. As long as I can build my clan base really well, I’m ok.

It wasn’t overly that impressive, the dynamic shadows are a nice addition but I was hoping for better features. It’s not nearly as big of an improvement compared to Halo 3 to Reach.

It’s SUPER awesome!

There’s three forge environments with their own unique pallets unlike Reach with grey forge objects on one map. It had little replay value and didn’t make very good maps.

But with Halo 4, we get Halo Reach’s tools, along with new tools, on top of Halo 3’s variety of forge objects. It’s going to be amazing. The replay value and possibilities in forge are endless!

The lock feature is awesome!

But those little zones could pose a problem. If you are invincible when in the zone then what’s to stop you from camping there until the game ends? A timer on the zones could fix this easily but still, if they got rid of fall damage they would not need these zones.

Nevertheless, I am very excited for Halo 4 and all it has to offer.

To be honest, it didn’t make me go “WOW!” like Halo Reach’s Forge when it was first shown.

The new features are all nice but I don’t know, I feel like there wasn’t that much of an improvement.

I think Forge looks awesome so far, I saw two new features that I really wanted implemented implemented (More than one Forge World, gravity shifting). And some other features I haven’t even thought of which is just an awesome bonus.

It looks great! I just don’t like how the terrain is bumpy, like in Reach, and there are soft killzones.

Same. These were the only things I was really miffed about.

Yeah, hopefully there will be somewhere flat to build on. I still don’t like the soft killzones, though. Also, did anyone notice how it said 0:10 remaining instead of just 10 seconds? Perhaps this means customizable soft killzones?

I like it so far, and I’m not much of a forge person.

I think you people need to stop overhyping certain stuff

Keep in mind that there are going to be multiple Forge pallets at our disposal.Hopefully something around the size of Forge world its self.Either way loving the new stuff cant wait for MOAR!

games will always be overhyped its the long waits and minimal information givin

Looking really great so far. All kinds of new features and fixes from Reach’s. I can see that lighting rendering bar getting annoying though everytime someone switches back to player mode.

Overall, a decent successor to it’s previous version considering the staggering amount of work 343i has had to put into the rest of the game. I didn’t expect as drastic of a change as Reach’s was to Halo 3. I’m sure we can expect a full reveal at SDCC next week as this was just a short demo and likely didn’t show off all of the bells and whistles they had in the works.

I just hope they put in Opening/Closing doors because Bungie said they wanted that and were actually lose to doing it but they couldn’t get in in time and hopefully 343 took that and expanded on it.

Halo 4’s Forge is pretty much what I wanted compared to Reach’s Forge. Only thing I really want now is more pieces to choose from. Even if they add them as DLC, that would be great. I always wanted Forge DLC.

Either way, super hyped for forge and Halo 4. Can not wait.

Looks good so far, but I have a feeling that 343i have much more to show us. I can’t wait to learn more about Forge in Halo 4.

I think this forge is definitely an evolution of Forge 2.0 rather than the revolution 2.0 was to Halo 3’s Forge.

The new tools and features are excellent additions and I’m itching to play them. I feel that a few people will be saying that not enough is different, or that it is too similar to Reach and I can see their point, but as the H4 engine is an updated version of Reach’s then it all makes sense.

All in all, loving the new additions, low-G zones are going to be hilarious to mess with
