You Can Mimic Race with KotH: The How-To

I’ve been trying to find ways to make older mini-game variants possible in Halo 4 with the resources we have. I had already posted a thread days ago on how to reverse engineer Grifball into a neutral bomb Assault, much to the excitement of many forum-goers.

This next thread is dedicated to creating a Race Variant from King of the Hill.

*Before people start complaining that it’s not the same. I KNOW THAT. I got slammed in my Assault thread by people saying its pointless because you cant do “setting A” or it lacks “content B”. This is a place holder until 343i adds a working race gametype, if they ever do.

** You will need to build your race track with this gametype in mind to work effectively.

I have the Gameype and a shotty racetrack in my fileshare to showcase the idea. Take a look if what’s written below is confusing. Note that the racetrack is seriously terrible. I literally built it in an hour just so that I had a map to go with the gametype. If someone can adapt a better racetrack, I will list it here in place of mine.

For those who don’t want to DL the map/variant, there is a video of it in my fileshare as well. It’s 6 minutes because I show off the points I make below. Feel free to take a look.

EDIT: HaloTracks has come out with an official gametype using the same KotH concept. The gametype is also in my fileshare, called “RACETRACKS”. Use this gametype to be official! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

note: not all of what’s stated below is absolutely required. You can change it up according to your forging pleasure. It’s your map.

The Map

You can use just about any racetrack for this gametype, but a few things need to be built in.

1.) Because you cannot start people on mongooses, build stocks like in a horse race or have players start next to their mongoose. This prevents people from stealing someone else’s. Make sure they are all equidistant so that everyone has an even start.

2.) Build your race track with at least one aspect that removes control of your mongoose (ex: Barrel Roll, Jump, Freefall, etc).

3.) Place a teleporter sender node below your map and set the borders to max and the bottom to max. Create a receiver box (enclosed so that they don’t go flying off from their falling momentum) near the beginning of your track, after the start. This is so that if they fall off your track, they don’t die and lose their mongoose, they teleport back and have to start over. You can place more teleporters with different channels if you want them to start over in a different location depending on where they fell off the track. That might be good for longer racetracks.

4.) At the locations where players lose control of their momentum, place a hill marker. It needs to be placed as such so that they cannot go back through it once the jump, barrel roll, or freefall is over. That way they HAVE to continue along the track. The time in the hill needs to be 1 second so that they get 1 point for traveling through it. After they pass through the hill, they must finish the track to pass through again. I put the hill after the start, but you could place it before, or anywhere in the middle. You can also have multiple hills. Just make sure it is impossible for players to stay in them to rack up points.

KotH Race Variant
-Starting weapon as a magnum (no point really, but you just don’t want anything that can hinder vehicles)
-All loadouts and ordinances are disabled
-invincible vehicles
-invincible players
-all hills active at all times
-hills never move
-4 points to win (or however many laps you want)

There are a few more settings, but that is the gist of it.

Yes, I know it’s rather annoying that we have to go through loops to make a race variant that we can actually compete with other with. Hopefully race is added in the future.

HAPPY FORGING!

I miss race :frowning: thanks for this OP

Thanks. I miss it too. At least we can mimic it with KotH.

I just raced against someone (lost =P) and the scoring works great!

Friendly bump to help get the idea out.

It amazes me how people are just now RE-discovering things that the vets did back in ce/2

I’m liking the idea! This could work.

cool i love race. could also do it with territories right?

To the OP… I’m good friends with a few people at ForgeHub and Halo Tracks. A Race game type has been created and is being tweaked at times. If you want the GT for who to contact I can bump you whom.

I’ve checked the sites and have found nothing on it. Forgehub isn’t even allowing people to post any user created materials for Halo 4 yet. I’m curious as to how they went about making a race variant. I’m guessing it’s close to mine. I can’t think of many other ways to go about it.

Race didn’t come along till H3, but yah, I know what you mean. I’m one of those vets who started with Halo:CE. Originally, we didn’t have many gametypes. What people did with what they were given spawned the new gametypes, especially with the advent of forge. I remember playing zombie on halo 2 where we HAD to switch teams ourselves after we got killed. I remember when race first got popular too.

My thinking is that we will see new gametypes as the game progresses. Right now, it’s Halo:CE level variety. 343i is starting new. We will see more if we wait.

I’m going to hold out for the real thing. I mean wtf 343 how much space does the race gametype take up like 28.8kb? My frustration grows each day they ignore the racing community. Checkout my Wario Stadium remake from MK64, I put an interesting team racingish gametype on my fileshare with it.

Ummm yeah… People don’t “post” them but who says some don’t share it with friends and make videos? If you want to check out the current “race” gametype look up Masta Hippie or CoookkieMonster for the type. They also have race maps as well and be sure to look up on YouTube Halo 4 Race tracks. You’ll find a lot of people to look up whom have created maps that use said gametype.

No need to get defensive. Just said I never found it. I took a look at the splash mountain track on youtube and it works exactly how I discovered as well, explanation of the KotH gametype and everything. Great minds think alike, right? ^^ Smart idea on all vehicles mongooses so that you can have more than 8. Didn’t think of that, though.

I’m still going to keep this thread going as you have seen from previous posts, people still don’t know this is an option yet. I updated the OP to include the official HaloTracks gametype.
