The one trend in FPS gaming that we really shouldnt ignore is the want for faster gameplay. If you look at halo 3 it probably isnt fast enough to fair well against today’s FPS games like COD, destiny, titanfall etc. That being said, the largest complaint about H3 from competitive players was also that it was too slow.
Most people want a faster Halo, a lot of them just dont like how 343 is trying to do that.
Sprint. I could write an epic, novel sized post about it’s detriments, but plenty of other threads already do that. Lets discuss instead, alternatives to sprint that can still make the game fast paced.
- Adjustments to the FOV.
Play h3. Then play h3 on two player splitscreen. It feels like you’re moving twice as fast just because the FOV is wider.
-Audio and visual cues.
A big part of sprint is the sound of wind rushing past you and visual effects of air speeding past and your screen shaking. You can have these effects without sprint.
-Movement speed
The most obvious alternative. Up the speed the player moves.
-Movement acceleration and deceleration.
This is the easiest way to battle that “sluggish” feeling. Being able to stop and start very quickly and change direction very quickly.
-Map size and map scaling.
Obviously the larger the maps are, the slower the gameplay can feel. Another huge factor though is how big map objects are compared to the player and how much space is between the objects. Bigger objects that are far apart from each other will make the player feel slower.
There are a few ways the game can feel very fast without sprint. Wider FOV with “speed” audio and visual cues, fast movement speed and player acceleration, and smaller maps and tighter scaling.
But super soldiers should be able to sprint because I want my sci-fi fantasy to be realistic and immersive.

i know you’re being sarcastic but, these types of changes would actually make more sense canon wise than sprint does.

I completely agree with you. I used to come here to preach all the bad things sprint did to Halo gameplay, but I’ve always been met with people who tell me I’m wrong. All the way down to being on a forum where one of the 343 employees came and said Sprint was included in the game because of Immersion. It’s a big joke and people really think Sprint is an immersive tool or some crap like that. It’s a button that makes your character go faster. Woo hoo! I feel so amazing!
It ruins fast paced gameplay, it ruins map design, and it makes Halo feel like every other FPS on the market. I especially felt like I was playing Crysis. An enhanced human in a super suit that can punch the ground and sprint.
In the end, what the majority of casual players want is that 2-3 hours of entertainment where they are told they are the best player in the world. H5 will give that to them. They want to run into every battle guns blazing, large explosions, vehicles driving fast, and points/medals flying across the screen so they feel they have played well. That’s what H5 is and that is why they will buy it. Then after a few months or the next big release, they will drop it until the next DLC comes out so they can try out the new stuff, then move on.
All your changes could make people feel like they are really moving faster than they are, but the disconnect they get between Halo and other games with sprint will be weird and then they might not play as much according to 343. They want the game to be accessible to all players, which is why they even completely changed the control scheme to match all the other FPS games.
I really feel that good Halo is dead. I’m mostly coming here to see what happens post H5. I want to see if once the game is launched, does MS clean house inside 343… With the terrible way H4 was after a few months, then the debacle with MCC, I want to see if H5 does do bad, does 343 lose most of it’s employees that are in charge of the direction of the gameplay. Do they fire those who say Halo with Sprint and “Modern” mechanics is the way to go and actually head back to the original way Halo was, or do they just cut the Halo title from being a game all together if H5 doesn’t do well and just let it be a movie/book/mag series, toy farm, top-down shooter like Spartan Assault? That’s really the only reason I’m here. That and to crack sarcastic jokes towards the direction Halo is going, as you saw from my first post.
And the super fast games that had extremely high base movement speed instead of sprint were on another world than halo.

I posted this in another thread.

Fast paced halo games without sprint do exist. Creating fast paced games does not mean allowing a player to get an speed boost.
If you wanted a faster player speed, it is as simple as raising base movement speed. In fact being able to shoot while moving around the current sprint speed is more “immersive” in the halo universe than the current sprint is.

I know that they exist, but at the sane time the very fast games with massive FOV felt very different from halo. Games like quake that had the large FOV and high base speeds seem very alien to even halo CE.
And on the topic of immersion, it really varies person to person. No one can say that one thing makes the game more immersive than the other. Some find the ability to speed faster and spring t to immerse them, some are immersed by the opposite. I personally am immersed by sprint.

Not saying we should have increased field of view, just let me move faster. When I run in real life my field of view does not increase.
I would be open to letting players sprint with the ability to use a weapon. That way sprint can only be used a more of an offensive tool. If someone tries to run, someone can run at them with their weapon and kill them before escaping. So you could use it to get to point A to B, but trying to “cat and mouse” will be harder to achieve.
Sprint seems like it causes unnecessary “roadblocks” in gameplay and I feel it would be better without it.

Im not saying you need to make it crazy like quake. Even H5 sprint speed is no where near the speed of quake.
Also, you cannot say that Halo is more immersive with sprint than it would be without sprint if they made adjustments like I mentioned in the OP, because you’ve never experienced the second option. You can assume, but you cannot know.

You don’t need a 150° FoV. A 15-20° increase would certainly be more than enough compared with the previous Halo titles (around 80-85° in average, I don’t remember the exact values). I felt H5 FoV was again very narrow.

Wow thanks, it’s even lower than what I remembered. It can easily be seen why H3 feels so slow, and the solution is just right here.

I only said halo is more immersive with sprint FOR ME. I know well others don’t find it immersive.

You cant know that. Youve never experienced a non sprint game with additions like visual and audio “speed” cues.

Good post. Thanks
If they bumped single player up to 100 youd see a real difference in the feel of the game.
Thing is some ppl just enjoy sprint. Some ppl actualy like the thought of putting down your gun down and running. No one can be blind and say Sprint is the only way to make a game faster. I for one honestly im enjoying what they are doing with Sprint in H5. Specially post beta. Increase strafe speed lowering the difference between spring and base speed.
its effects on maps does not bother me at all. I dint play halo 5 or 4 thinking “Thiss hallway would be small in other halos” lol that’s just stupid. The perfect sized map for halo5’s gameplay will always be bigger than the previous ones that’s common sense.
even if they make the game faster with al those changes mentioned in this tread. Some ppl will still want the option to kick it up a notch.
i hate the “it’s a natural movement” argument but ughh it lowkey is. Super soldier should not ever need to drop his weapon for speed but if he were to do it lol he would move faster. honestly speaking try to picture cheif in a cutscene runningg with PURPOSE with gun mounted lol

Obviously some people just like it. Im not convinced a halo game with sprint will ever have succesful MP though. Sprint already has two strikes against it with Reach and H4. How many games have to bomb before we start looking at alternatives?

Whoaa let’s not get over ourself and out that weight all on sprint. In both reach and H4 sprint was the least of those games worry. Jetpacks? Bloom? custom loadouts? Ordiance drops? But I’m not gonna play the what if game but if halo 2 or 3 dropped today they wouldn’t hold the same numbers they did back then. Hopefully MCC Is fixed by halo 5 release and let their numbers clash old vs the new. With all the hate on H5 it shouldnt be hard for the collection to keep a higher play count after ppl have completed its campaign
