I occasionally see posts online with yoinks in them. I know that these are to censor out swearing, but my (somewhat silly) question is: Is this automatic or is it just a community convention?

It works automatically. There are many words that censor themselves. I will now type out the “F” word in this post: -Yoink- Mondays! See how it censored itself :slight_smile:
