At what point will enough be enough! How much information do we need on screen at once? Somewhere along the line it seems to have gone just a bit too far, what with Steitzer’s V/Os, the mid screen text, medal pop-ups (all three, at times, communicating the exact same thing), global ordnance waypoints, objective waypoints, vehicle seat indicators, in addition to the usual HUD data.

So what do you all think the combat log actually is? Will all these things get in the way for any of you?
What bugs me the most is the giant “CARRYING THE FLAG” notification that pulses under your shield bar when you have the flag. Do they really need the visual of you holding the flag, the announcer saying “You are the flag carrier” and a giant HUD notification?
It just seems like for a lot of HUD elements, 343’s really going overkill
> Thus far every iteration of Halo 4’s HUD doesn’t seem cluttered to me.
And I basically agree. And I know I’ll get used to it. I would just prefer not to have unnecessary clutter.
I’m just hoping:
a) It’s not too invasive/intrusive, and
b) It’s not another case of data presented textually which is already communicated in the audio (i.e. Jeff say’s “Flag taken”, Combat log reads “Flag taken”)

Agreed. Another example, even though it is kind of aesthetically pleasing.
there trying to make the game easy so new players know what to do. which is a shame because sure the new players might buy the game but will soon stop playing it and go to COD AC and BF while the real halo players will b stuck with all these useless things. we are forced to look at 100 different weapons, PLASMA KILL GUN KILL MELE KILL and other -Yoink-. like i dont know i just killed somone with a sword i dont need big letters to figure that out and the useeful info that im carring a flag like no -Yoink-
The only thing they added is the text above your reticle and the text when you’re holding a Flag or Bomb. I really didn’t even notice the last one at first. And while I never liked the text in the middle (I even hate it), I actually stopped noticing it as well when I payed more attention to other players and surroundings.

But again, is it needed? Maybe it helps people keep track of how many more points till their personal ordnance, but this would only apply in Infinity slayer (or whatever other game modes use personal ordnance). Maybe it helps in something like Regicide as well.
What I’m getting at is this; I don’t mind more HUD information, I just don’t want it to be useless HUD information.

No it’s not neccesary and I also said I hate it, but some people just need to see those points to feel rewarded. There’s an upside and a downside to everything. The positive thing is that people will try more things and play the objective more, while the negative thing is for people who don’t care to see how many points they get and will be annoyed by the constant messages…

So do you think it was just too difficult to implement some degree of HUD customisation for those of us who would prefer not to have the mid-screen text?

I would’ve liked this. Deus Ex: Human Revolution gave you the ability to turn off certain HUD elements, and it made a lot of people happy.
However, I just read the Bulletin and it was confirmed that we will not have the option to turn the center-screen text off.
It’s unfortunate, since I’m sure it’s a relatively minor adjustment that will make some people enjoy the game that much more.
I still remember the Armored Core games for the PS2, where the HUD was fully customizable, you could remove whatever you wanted, and even add a few things that weren’t there by default.
I think the words on screen were placeholders for the medals the pax event. The medals weren’t ready so the words appeared on screen instead. I think it will be the medals on the left hand side of the screen in the final build, replacing the words that appear in the middle of the screen that we have seen from the gameplay so far.
