So me and my friends tried to play the new Spartan Ops today…Tried would be the key word here.Three of us live in Australia,one of us lives in New Zealand.Guess which person the game decided would be the best host for all of us?If you guessed an Australian (which would be the logical thought) then you’d be completely wrong.
The three of us in Australia all live within 5 kilometres of each other.You’d think the host that would have the best connection for the majority of us would be an Australian.Us three Australians were experiencing 3 second lag,best case scenario.It would vary between that and 10 seconds.
Now before you say that maybe our connections were pretty bad and the New Zealander did indeed have the best connection,let me tell you best part.Usually when the host’s connection goes below a certain point,it should change host,right?Well,apparently not.In an attempt to get the host to change,we had the New Zealander load up about 20 videos on his computer at once.It made his connection so bad we were ice-skating all over the place without even touching the controller.Host change then?Not a chance.Then we thought maybe the host doesn’t change mid-game in Spartan Ops or something,so we backed out to the menu and started up the game again,all while our New Zealander was still having his bandwidth hogged by the computer.Different host now?Double no.For some reason the game thought the one across the ocean with his bandwidth being drained to hell was still the best host.Just a side note,I was the lobby host,not the New Zealander,so that wouldn’t have affected it.
To test the connection of us Australians,we started a game without the friend from New Zealand.As good a connection as you could hope for.So none of us had poor connection.We were just lagging because the game thought the one guy on a different island would be best host for all of us.

I don’t mind if I get an American host in matchmaking,as long as the majority of the people in the game are Americans.If it is 1 American and 15 Australians however,that’s just ridiculous.Usually I play the game and afterwards I will leave to find a game more suited to my connection.
The point of my post is that they need to rethink the way the game chooses the host.Currently it seems whoever has the best connection to America (Which would be NZ since it is closer to the US than AUS) gets host,which is the wrong way to go about it in my opinion.
I just want to be able to play with all of my friends and have at least a half-decent connection.I shouldn’t have to tell my friend from New Zealand that he can’t play with us because he’s from New Zealand.I want to actually play with 3 other friends without having 3 of us ice skating around the map and 1 of us doing the mission because 3 of us are incapable of doing anything.Is that really too much to ask for?
On topic: It’s ridiculous how bad the connections and host choice can get. Dedicated servers would at least ensure we all have equally horrible connections. lol

That’s not what I said at all.I am playing with the New Zealander by choice.The thing is,I am also playing with two fellow Australians.My point is that an Australian should get host because that would be the best connection for the majority.Instead the game picks the host closest to America.It is a flawed system.
