Yay or nay

Ok so I’ll start by saying I was terribly disappointed with the multiplayer maps in halo 5, eden/empire stasis/torque and the mercy/regret rust, white cell, really not a fan of any of them. Echelon and a few others are at best ehh for me. Not one map on 5 do I put on par with lockdown/guardian/the pit/ascension/ivory tower. What I was thinking, how would everyone feel if they brought those 5 back, remastered them, and made them look really good and legitimately took their time and made a handful of actual “classic” maps, feel like we haven’t had one in awhile and they might as well be creating them out of the forge themselves.

The maps in Halo 5 are generally very good to play on. Had lots of fun. I think they all work very well in regards to play and movement.

But aesthetically they are a bit samey. Eden and Empire obviously - but there’s still not much differentiation to Stasis, Torque, and Plaza. Or even Fathom.

And then the Forge maps, again which play well, all have a similar look and feel to them.

If they had of mixed up the colour palettes. Made a few of them more alien (and not just purple / Covenant). And added some more dynamic structures to them (flowing water, revolving statues, moving cranes etc).

The main concern I have over re-hashing old maps is that they will never play the same as they did (with Infinite’s new mechanics). And from this point of view Halo 5’s maps may be better suited, at least initially, for a re-do.

While I wouldn’t be bothered, I feel like a lot of others would just feel like they’re running out of ideas and thus pandering to fan favorites.

I want a fresh slate but I also wouldnt mind having a sample of classics that return. In fact I would prefer it.

The one thing I want in a new Halo game is new maps. Map design is a rare place in Halo where I see lots of room for innovation, experimentation, and expression. From my point of view, the failure of Halo 5’s map design was being too safe and predictable. Replacing that with old maps and fan service is not the solution.

I also like maps that have a dynamic graphical centre piece to them. Something that helps ground them.

Halo 5 tried to put cool things in the background… but you don’t notice those while you are playing.

Molten was the one map - with it’s cool river and waterfall of lava. It really set off the map. Pity that the map itself didn’t seem to work very well.

Transit has it’s train that comes through… but it’s down the bottom in part of the map that nobody really uses.

I’d like to see moving conveyer belts, water features, cranes, active machinery bits, geological anomalies, wildlife… whatever. Just give the map some life.

I do love those classic maps. But movement mechanics such as clamber, sprint and grapple hook pick ups (which I’m confident will be featured heavily in Halo Infinite gameplay) will have a drastic effect on how those maps flow. They won’t play as you remember them. So without playtesting them, I’m not sure I would want them back, some may work, some may need adjustments. It’s hard to say.

It’s hard to remake maps because the mobility is different. Look at how different Truth is in H5 compared to midship, they had to upscale like crazy. Maybe it’ll be easier to scale in Infinite since there’s seemingly no thrusters but there’s still sprint so you can’t just remake a map 1 to 1. If they can do it successfully then I’m all for remakes, otherwise I’d rather them just do new maps. Rig, Plaza, Coli, Fathom, Eden, are all good maps in my opinion with Fathom being the worst out of the bunch so I don’t agree all H5 maps are bad but I will say there’s more bad/meh maps than good ones.

Some halo 5 maps are amazing, plaza and coli being among the best.

But I agree, I’m hoping for some of the most iconic maps in the whole series to come out with infinite.

There is a definite lack of inspiration for most Halo 5 maps. They often feel either cluttered with nonsense or aesthetically same-y.
