Thoughts ?

That’s terrible.

When will 343 realise that “modernising” halo just is not working?

Can you actually tell us. It makes for a more user friendly thread. And for people that don’t like to copy and pasge links imto web browsers. I think we need Ruthless with his lazy links.

When will the community realize that there’s way more to Halo’s downturn than H5’s gameplay?

…the “modern” gameplay (while not perfect) is still far-and-away the best thing H5 has going for it.

Gameplay is the most important part of a game’s success.

Great, unique gameplay will overcome other obstacles. Generic, bad gameplay will cause a game to drown amongst outside obstacles.

Wow I’m surprised it’s at 12th. I figured it would be lower.

If a game is good, it’ll beat the competition. You can’t blame everything on competition either, gameplay is just as important, if not more.

You kidding? These people will blame it on every excuse under the sun except for gameplay.

Lol still! It’s sad when more people want to watch someone play mind craft over halo. There’s your sign right there to stop what you are doing and go back to what actually worked.

@ZuuluuZ:No guys… No… there are plenty of good games with great gameplay out there. They all can’t be #1… that goes for H5 as well.

Stop and consider this… could it be that the lack of Split-screen at launch might have rubbed some people the wrong way? This doesn’t really affect me, so I couldn’t care less, but for some, I see it being a big deal… Also, could it be that the LACK of CONTENT at launch wore on people’s attention spans? Where first impressions are everything? COULD it BE… that if the Ranking system had worked correctly/better in the first place, you wouldn’t see so many frustrated gamers getting fed up with the game? Both early on, and maybe even more so as of late? COULD IT BE… that the overall brand identity of Halo has been tarnished more and more upon the release of every Halo game?? The increasingly childish/Saturday-morning-cartoon style of story, ranging on being an overly epic and “unbelievable” space-opera with increasingly questionable art direction… the game is losing its grit and believability and grounded sensibility that made it so appealing in the first place. The music is different and Marty’s trademark stamp and atmosphere he helped create in the original games is gone. Not to mention the over saturation of meaningless content, not enough meaningful content being developed for the MP game? All of these come together and change what makes up the Halo brand and experience.

Halo: Reach, H4, and MCC were awful releases in terms of multiplayer gameplay, relative to the original trilogy… they either changed the fundamental ideals of of the game, the balanced Arena combat, and CODified the game, or they just didn’t work at all for months after launch MCC, and there were subtle differences in MCC’s ports of each game that affected the gameplay of each title in a BIG way… All of these factors leading into the release of H5 put the game already on thin ice… some poor marketing (Campaign-related) and design choices in content development, playlist management, and some flaws dealing with the infrastructure of Matchmaking have hurt the game FAR more than the gameplay itself.

Speaking from personal experience, I have played COD… it’s never really held my attention. I have played EVERY Halo game for COUNTLESS hours and I will tell you one thing… Halo 5 does NOT play like COD or any other “modern shooter” out right now. I play with Recon controller settings and thus, it controls like other Halo games, it has comparable kill times to past Halo’s and longer TTK’s than any “modern military shooter” that has been popular for the last several years. We have descope back… which is HUGE… There are points, weapons, and areas to control on map, as with most past Halo titles… there are no kill streaks or random supply/weapon drops. The movement system works differently than any other “modern high-mobility shooter” on the market with unique and interesting ways of combining abilities that you do not see elsewhere… I can go on…

The point is, all of these factors align to recreate the same unique/trademark Halo experience we’ve had for years, just with some additional bells and whistles. It’s about using the map and tools we’ve been given as players and using them to out-gun and out-play the enemy. No, Spartan Abilities are not perfectly implemented in all cases, but they are generally balanced… There are no character classes or loadouts, no imbalances off initial spawns… At the end of the day it’s you vs. the other guy, that’s what good Halo has always been.

There are far more longstanding issues pertaining to the Halo brand that are causing it to lose steam… It’s not the gameplay in H5’s case. It’s the sole reason, probably, that myself and my XBL regulars have continued playing the game, through all of 343’s highly questionable management and content-related decisions… because they at least realized that “gameplay is important” this time around and in many ways, brought the series back to its roots… and sometimes in ways that aren’t so obvious. Gamers are partially the problem too… the problem is, people don’t think. They latch on to widespread opinions, ignorant or otherwise, close their minds, and don’t develop their own opinions or understanding. That’s one thing H5 has fallen victim to… the “modern gamer” mentality.

Remember when people thought CoD Ghosts and MCC were miles above Halo 5 on the Most Played lost, and people were tripping over each other for a chance to bash Halo 5?

LOL… come on man, it’s not even close! Similar features, OK, but vastly different gameplay, map design, controls, and implementation… Very different experiences!

Exactly… I don’t think it’s the mechanics turning players away as much as server bugs and lack of features. I think not having split screen hurt the population way more than they anticipated it would.

Why is this surprising? Fact of the matter is, Halo’s golden days have long been over. Have been since Halo 3 when the main trilogy ended. And since then has its popularity declined with every game Microsoft wants to milk out of the franchise.

It’s a concept not entirely new when franchises get milked. Some franchises fair better with the multiple sequels they release. Others don’t. Halo is the latter.
