So I have been looking to upgrade my monitor for when the Scarlet and Infinite come out. Currently Xbox scarlet with be capable of running 120 FPS at 4K (so it’s claimed). I currently use a 10 year old monitor that is 1600 x 900.
Now I plan on getting the new Xbox and I want a monitor that will be 3840 x 2160 with the 120hz refresh.
My concern is the HDMI 2.0 vs HDMI 2.1. My understanding is that the 2.1 will be a bit more future proof than 2.0.

I can guarantee you that there will be no major games running at 120 fps at 4K. That will be limited to some easy to run arcade games. The vast majority of games will (very optimistically) be 1080p120 or 4K60 at most.
None of that is to say you can’t get a high refresh rate 4K monitor, since that’d still give you the option to run anything. Just that you should probably take this into account in your considerations, especially since high refresh rate 4K monitors are still very expensive.
My suggestion? Wait. Wait until the Xbox Scarlett comes out. Wait until you know what resolutions and frame rates released games actually run at. You will be more able to judge what you actually need, the monitors will be cheaper. There are no downsides. Just wait and don’t rush to buy a new monitor based on some unsubstantiated marketing.

Thank you. That’s the way I have been leaning. Just was hoping to get one decent sized purchase done prior to Infinite Scarlet Xbox next year. I am sure this conversation will pop up more and more as the year counts down to the Scarlet and Infinite release
There will be a camel hump in any new console released. What I mean by that is, at first, games will not reliably hit a certain resolution/framerate combination. As developers learn more about the console, tools and software mature a little, then the performance will peak. Then inevitably the complexity of games increase as the console cycle matures and games fall off the ability again the hit those high res/frame targets.
