Per Xbox.com’s website on Halo Wars 2: “Xbox Play Anywhere: Buy the digital version and it’s yours to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.”
That’s straightforward enough, but I’m wondering whether this also applies to people who buy a physical copy of the game as well.
I assume that this does not apply to hard copies of the game, but just want to clarify one way or another. Thanks!

It only works on the digital download. I was buying on amazon and ran into the same problem, but they replied that it was only the digital download that includes both.

Thanks, appreciate the quick response. I just wanted absolute verification from a player, one way or another 
Looks like Microsoftstore messing up my pre-order was a blessing in disguise, I can cancel my hard copy order and buy the digital now to play on both systems
Was your pre-order for the console version? I had pre-ordered the pc version, but they canceled all of those lol.
