So my friend and I who are both Xbox live gold members play Halo 4 war games on one Xbox 360 (as in we play on the same console, split screen) We frequently see duplicates of the same person, only the difference is that the duplicates show up with (1) after the gamer tag.
That brings me to my question. When my friend and I play, do our gamer tags show up with the (1) as well? Or does it show our separate gamer tags?
It depends does your friend have his own account? If he does then it shows up as his and yours shows up as yours

Yes, we both have our own gamer profiles, both have Xbox live gold. But that’s good to know! Thank you very much 
It only shows up as a duplicate gamer tag with a (1) after it (sometime even a (2) or (3), depending on how many friends on the same console) when they are playing as an online guest. No one can tell if you’re on the same console if you have your own gold accounts.
