Xbox 360 Shutting Down

What opinions do you guys have on the news of 343 shutting down online functionality of every Halo game that came out before the Xbox One?

It was going to happen at some point so I’m not to surprised, I mean it’s been active since 2006? 2007? Pretty long time and by now most people are on XB1s or newer and then there’s the MCC if people are still wanting that multiplayer experience.

It’s been a fun run. I have made many friends over the years on the 360 platform. send it off with a bang

It literally doesn’t need to happen at some point. How many old PC games still have servers? I wish they would explain more because these older games are peer to peer, not dedicated servers. As long as Xbox 360s Xbox Live exists, there’s no reason peer to peer multiplayer should go away.

I’m honestly surprised that it’s taken this long. It’s sad because of the finality of it, but the era of those games passed a long time ago

P2p still costs money 🤷 it’s just much less expensive compared to dedicated servers. I’m sure the reason is player numbers are so low that it doesn’t justify keeping them, especially when there’s already the alternative with the XB1 and MCC. Heck even I’d be doing it, I really don’t see no reason to keep the 360 going because it’s way outdated at this point and most of the world has moved into XB1 or the new series X stuff. I’ve seen how halo 3 can literally only have a couple hundred players and to me that’s a waste of time and effort to maintain for such a low number, and that’s just how I think of it myself anyway, I don’t know 343s reasons but I would think they don’t want to maintain the older stuff anymore, especially when there is an alternative.

I’m curious why you feel like stuff should be maintained just because they use a p2p network? It can be 2030 and I won’t blame people shutting stuff down from 2005, at some point that stuff is going to be pointless to keep running because it’s not worth it. CS:GO is one of them older pc games but it justifies maintaining because it still has large player counts. Stuff like say Age of Empires though? No one really plays it anymore, especially online.

Yes it’s P2P, but there still needs to be systems in place to set games up and organise players into matches. It’s these components that are going away. By next December Halo 3 will have been online for 14 years, that’s impressive in itself but it’s an absolute age in the computing world. Having to maintain legacy systems like these and keep them safe and secure on modern hardware isn’t cheap and isn’t easy - especially when so few people these days are actually playing. That\s burning money that could be better spent elsewhere. At some point you need stop supporting 6+ games and focus your attention on what’s coming. Sad times for sure for a lot of folk, but it does need to happen
