Im not too sure about the reason behind this move to a hidden rank, however. It is suggested that it is too reduce cheating, account boosting, harassment etc.

That is indeed the reasoning.

Given that the entire purpose of this function is to put everybody on a level playing field, your claim it exists to make people “feel special” is even more laughable than the average whining rank-whorer.

Can you not even see friends in a main menu esq thing like in reach?

It hasn’t been confirmed whether hidden ranks apply to everyone; just players in online lobbies or everyone but players in your friends list.

I will be happy if the ranks are visible between friends… normally you have a… somewhat “sane” competition with friends… so it will be cool if they make that rank “friends only”.
Afterall, I don’t care about people I don’t know rank; if the matchmaking is good…
I’m guessing the ‘hidden rank’ is also referring to the skill experience rank like Halo 3’s system. So the progression system rank will be visible like Reach.
