Wraith Design Question

Why did 343 drastically change the model for the Wraith? I would understand a modification similar to how they beefed up the Ghost, but that new Wraith is just awful. What was the reasoning behind the change? I am not trying to troll and I would like to know a legit answer to the question.

Please do not treat this thread like the typical “oh here we go! Why can’t you take accept change?” type of discussion. I simply want to know why they couldn’t stay true to the original?

EDIT Does anyone know if there was a reason provided by 343 on why they changed the design? I would be interested in knowing their reasoning. I understand that lore wise anything can be changed. I simply want to know if there is a reason provided on why the artists wanted to change it?

EDIT 2 The design is actually better than I had initially thought. I thought the cannon did not tuck into the hull of the tank, when a driver is not present. However, I still stand by the fact that I still do not like the design.

EDIT 3 MOST IMPORTANT! - I see that everyone is hinged on saying that technology changes so will designs of the vehicles in the context of lore. I completely understand that technology changes everything as it advances. My question is what made the artists change it? There should be a logical reality based explanation that made the artists say “hey I want to change that for x and y reasons”. Someone has mentioned that it was simply because the artists wanted things to look more magical. I can accept that answer if a link is provided.

Maybe the covenant found a better position for the wraith body to be in that took less energy to levitate.

  1. The lore is that the covenant has modifed the wraith to be cheaper and had to strap down the design for mass assembly.

  2. 343i changed the design for all covie vehicles. Most weapons, UNSC vehicles. Everything has pretty much been facelifted. This design just matches with the more insect-like design of the covenant vehicles.

  3. I like it. Looks more unique as it’s own design. The older design looks like a bloated ghost.

Maybe they have more than one kind of tank. We do. Now. On Earth. Several variants each visually distinct. Why can’t the Covenant have more than one kind? It’s not that the old kind is gone, it’s just that this particular model is more abundant or popular at this particular time and place.

But real-world explanation? Because it looks cool and the thing needed an update. It’s looked the same since Halo 2. 343 have their own artists and their own vision for the game. It’s their franchise now and this, for good or ill, is how their creative team sees the Halo Universe.

There was something I read about them going back to an old design that was easier to make and more nimble, etc. I think it was on the card for the reqs.

I can accept those reasons. I like the new look of all the other vehicles. I just thought they made the Wraith a bigger target for enemies to hit and find that particular design to be awful. Was there a reason to change that vehicle’s design so drastically?

It’s actually a little smaller than the original, it’s just…taller. The hind side of the tank is higher up so that the arcs of plasma can reacher higher and further, I guess. (Thats atleast what it looked like in the Outside Xbox gameplay.)

I like the new design
it looks absolutely amazing from the front, its so detailed and looks super futuristic.
From the side though I agree it looks kind of weird but I think my main complaint is the wailing sound it makes when you are driving

It looks like 343i really wanted to make Halo 5 theirs so they changed the looks of just about everything.
I like it. Still has that Wraith feel but looks almost completely different.

The old models worked for the old games. in 4, the wraith looked a little off to me. In 5 it looks like it fits it, and is honestly a better looking alien tank design. As someone said above, the old wraith just looked like a fat ghost.

As explained above it’s in the Lore.

I actually think it looks nicer now.

Lore they created. To make an excuse to change everything. Lol.

I suppose my biggest problem with the design is the side profile and the curvature of said design. The front side is smaller in terms of width, but it looks like the gunner is just a bigger target now because of how the back plate is designed.

I can accept the fact that variations exist, but obviously that is not the case. If that was 343’s reasoning, then they would also try to include air vehicles in the game, for variation, since we both know that pelicans are not the only things in use in UNSC military. I am simply wanting to know if 343 provided an explanation for the redesign. I would be interested in knowing it. Did they simply say “hey I want to change that!” or did they actually see where the design could improve and provide notes on what they did not like about the old version?

I actually prefer the new model… Lol idk why. Looks a lot more aggressive, like an upright scorpion or something. Much better than the old model tbh (to me).

They don’t need an excuse lol we can b***h and moan all we want they don’t owe us an explination. Chevy doesn’t need to explain every visual change they make to the newer model of the Camaro, and not every one likes it.

If you think about it, now that it’s separated into 3 pieces that can move independently of each other, it can now traverse terrain easier. Where before it could get caught on certain terrain features since it was one large mass, it can now maneuver easier around or over them without running the risk of flipping.

That’s the silliest comparison I’ve ever heard. The camaro’s not an established universe; it’s a car model. Of course it has to upgrade.
A more accurate comparison would be Disney changing the way everything looks in the star wars universe. And they don’t. Cause it doesn’t make sense.

That’s just what I like to tell myself, I guess.

I think they’re just trying to make the franchise their’s. They’re no longer the keepers of Bungie’s Halo, they are Halo now. They want to utilize the skills of their artists and such. Make it their own. I don’t have a problem with it because I understand why they do this. Sure, some of the older stuff I prefer, but that’s just because I’m more familiar with it. A lot of the new designs are fantastic, but I immediately recoil at the sight of the changes made at first until it grows me and I look at them a little more objectively. Then I get it … most of the time.
