Wraith Battlefield Mortar Mechanic

Hey,

Does anyone remember the mortar from Battlefield and how when you used it, it would enter a minimap screen where you could fire anywhere on the map with enemies showing up from whenever an ally spotted their last known location?

Imagine that the Wraith tank had that, as an artillery weapon first and tank second, on the downside that like being zoomed in, there would be no radar to counter somebody running up to your tank, along with the obvious lack of sight while in the minimap.

I think it would make the Wraith more unique, but I hope the downsides would also balance out the whole “I’m shooting at you from outside my base and you can’t see me” also, wraith on wraith artillery action ftw.

Doubtful that 343i would implement this in a Halo game but was wondering what the community thought of the concept anyhow. Just a discussion to pass the time.

I don’t think the community wants this, it’ll spin Halo into a direction that’ll make it too similar the Battlefield. I personally like the simplicity of Halo’s weapon/vehicle play. Point and shoot, point and drive, nothing fancy.

I actually think that would add a pretty sweet dynamic to the already very large warzone maps. I’d be keen to see this! Would definitely make the Wraith more unique in that sense, it would be used in a completely different way, rather than using it in a close quarters situation and boosting into people, sit it back, defend the base, etc.

Like this.

I see where you’re coming from and I respect that point of view. If anything I’d just like to see this sort of thing in play, maybe one day I could see it in a mod for Halo 3 if that ever happens.

My reasoning however is to separate things that have overlapping roles in order to promote a wider range of unique gameplay. What if there was a range marker to help identify where your shots will hit?

I’ll be honest, your idea sounds like it’d fit better in a spinoff game, but not in the main series of games. If 343 does a Halo 3: ODST equivalent then this would be perfect. Great way to experiment, and it would be low risk because it’s not in a main game.

Edit: I like your idea, but I don’t feel like it fits the “feel” of the main trilogy.

That’s a fair and reasonable argument.

How about this, make it the Ultra Rare variant of the Wraith. That makes it more powerful, and it doesn’t replace it.

So we’ll have 4 wraiths, and it’ll be limited to Warzone? I’d be fine with this.

I would prefer it to be a primary mechanic if it was tested and balanced, but this is clearly the safest option while pleasing both crowds.

Interesting idea OP, and great thought Marlins. TBH, when I first played Halo, I expected Wraiths to work like this. I had read the books first, and in the books they are written as just that: uber powerful mortar cannons that cause trembling and fear even in Blue Team. So when I first saw one in campaign, I was terrified. I thought I would be wrecked for sure. But once I realized how the NPC aiming mechanic for them sucks, and that they are super easy to dodge, I was a bit underwhelmed. Then when I first got in one, and saw how it’s mechanics worked, I was slightly disappointed. It was not what I expected. After a while though I came to accept it, and fully understand why it works the way it does.

I agree with you OP, I would like to see how it would operate as the uber powerful mortar cannon like it is in the books, but I also agree with Marlins that probably isn’t a good idea to change such a deep rooted mechanic in a main game. A spinoff game, such as an ODST sequel, or even a Reach like game could implement it to see if it is received well.

That’s actually a really good idea, make the wraith step out of the scorpions shadow for a bit with an ultra rare version of it with the mortar mechanic

Why not, we have 4 gravity hammers

Small steps mate. But I agree. I would like to see the wraith be more of a mortar vehicle. It’s sub-par to the tank in just about every way.
