We all know that the classic Warthog run at the end of Halo CE, Halo 3, and sort of in ODST were memorable events in our Halo experience that made us play through those missions more than once. My question to the community is, would you like to see the return of a Warthog run in Halo 4? It probably wouldn’t even have to be at the very ending of the game but rather maybe in the beginning or somewhere in the middle of the game.
Post your thoughts and give out some ideas of where it could possibly fit in. Who cares if we don’t know the full story yet. Let’s make up our own scenario!
Idea for Warthog Run
My idea was that the Warthog run could be at the beginning. This depends if the game starts out as the Frigate is being pulled in the Forerunner world or whatever it is. When the Frigate is being pulled in, Master Chief has an idea on how to escape. Maybe there could be a Warthog stashed into the frigate and MC makes a run for the Warthog. We then find ourselves having to drive the warthog straight through the frigate dodging explosions and maybe gun fire and what not. Near the ending of the warthog run, you bash through the Frigate in freefall only to see this huge world for the first time. After managing to dodge all gunfire while in the warthog, you come to a stop where they have lost sight of you and that is where the story begins and where the title “Halo 4” appears.
> Well, I would not want it to be at the very beginning, because I think we are not yet really involved in the story to make it really intense.
Yeah you’re probably right. I just thought it would make that much more epic because you are encountered with this enemy for the first time and as you are driving the warthog, you are wondering why in the hell this encounter is trying to kill you. It would make it that much more intense and mysterious. But yeah, I can see where you are coming from as well.
I think it would be a great way to kick off the new tirlogy by having the best part of the original be it’s opening. The openings to Halo 1 and 2 were epic. Halo 3 not so much. What a way to return to where we left off in H3 by starting exactly how it left off…with a warthog run.
Imagine having to drive through what is left of your ship while it is exploding all around you. Just like at the end of CE.
SIMPLY EPIC!

Yeah dude my idea if you read it, mentions it being in the beginning. I think it would be badass as hell.
If we even have UNSC Vehicles in Halo 4, seeing as we might be going into some sort of Forerunner or Precursor structure, then I think somewhere in the middle (Like the Climax of the game’s story) with some epic music going on in the background (Much Like Halo 3). I’m not really seeing a Warthog Run so early in the game, seeing as we don’t know where we are. Other than that I’d love to see another Warthog Run.
Please, not another Warthog run. I mean, they are fun and all gameplay-wise, but somehow they always spoil the end of the campaigns.
H1: You drive like mad to escape being blown to bits. Not only isn’t that the kind of final gameplay moments I would have loved to see for the Master Chief, it also is completely and utterly stupid the way it was done. See here for a discussion on that subject.
H2: Cliffhanger ending, thus no Warthog run.
H3: Another Warthog run to avoid being blown to bits, ironically by the replacement for the very ring on which you had your first Warthog run. Although I understand this was done as a kind of homage to H:CE, I think is was rather cheesy because it’s the second time in three games that end with the Master Chief fleeing from something. And even though this “something” is an explosion that would kill you, it just feels awkward and cheap instead of epic. MC would have deserved an epic ending to his (first) trilogy.
ODST: Not a real Warthog run per se because you have to fight quite a lot and also get to drive a Scorpion, but the part where you drive along Coastal Highway before the final battle was the most annoying part in the whole game.
Reach: Only game so far that doesn’t have either some kind of Warthog run (the Mongoose run doesn’t count because it’s a the start of the mission) or a cliffhanger ending, and the main protagonist dies… Conincidence?

I agree that in Halo CE, the warthog run level design made absolutely no sense. I mean, what kind of ship is made like that? But I agree what you are saying. What if they didnt have the warthog run at the ending? What if it was in the beginning like in my idea or somewhere in the middle? And have the warthog run actually make some sense where there isnt a clean route to take that it almost seems as though that area was built particularly built for such an occasion. Have the warthog run a bit challenging and make your own route or something. It could be done I think.
Well, I’ve read what people have said, but I don’t personally find the Warthog runs to be cheap. I wouldn’t mind if there wasn’t a Warthog run in Halo 4, but I would like at least one, or an equivalent run in the new trilogy. Wouldn’t you?

Agreed. I think a warthog run would be needed at least once in the new trilogy
A warthog run would be great yes, but not at the end of the game. I also don’t want Chief to be running away from an imminent explosion like the previous Halos, I want him running towards something, like a huge boss that he needs to get to and defeat within a time limit, or someone he needs to rescue, or a squad that he needs to back up, or something like that.
> Am I the only one who liked the mangoose run in Reach ?
I liked it too. It was like “OMGWTFBBQ WHY AM I CHASED BY SCARABS AND DROP PODS AND BANSHEES WHEN I’M JUST DRIVING A RIDICULOUS UNARMED VEHICLE AND WHEN I MUST DELIVER AN IMPORTANT PACKAGE TO SAVE HUMANITY FROM EXTINCTION”. It clearly made the Scarabs frightening ; when Master Chief likes to destroy as many Scarabs as he can, on Reach Noble Team clearly had a different situation…
I can’t stand the endings to ODST and Reach. They’re basically just games of Firefight in disguise. If I wanted to play Firefight I’d go start a game myself. Endings are supposed to be epic and out of the ordinary. The Warthog runs of CE and Halo 3 were great to me because they were unexpected. Halo 2’s boss battle was great as well because it was also unexpected. You were on foot nearly the entire games except once in a blue moon when you grabbed a vehicle just to get you somewhere faster. If you don’t count the epic tank missions of H2/3, players need a break from the standard run-and-gun action and bring something new to the table. The warthog runs did that and I think one at the beginning to H4 would be a good tribute to fans of the original trilogy (look at me I sound like a StarWars fan) and would be an epic way to open the game. You get in the warthog that you landed in the cargo bay of the ship in H3 and must drive through your exploding ship and eventually make it out only to jump into the opening of that Forerunner planet-like thing. Welcome to the new Halo everyone. How epic would that be?
