I’m on the side of Halo 5G 2 because I honestly can’t believe that this is the story 343i wanted to tell. It’s extremely weak and makes no sense, at all.
In Halo Reach we find out that there’s a conglomerate of human AI who are trying to guide humanity to a better future. We also find out that the Covenant is aware of this foe and probably deem them a huge threat since they believe all full blown AI are bad since they know what happened with Mendicant Bias.
I could understand Cortana not wanting to die. Coming to the realization that you’ll live a fraction of a human’s life despite being vastly more powerful they then are, would be a kick in the nuts for anyone…or I guess the -Yoink!- for her. But she knows MC wouldn’t let her die, she knows Halsey wouldn’t just brush her off. She knows people care for her and would try to find a way to help her. It feels like I’m trying to convince a friend not to commit suicide here.
I mean, come on the ENTIRE reason MC is even given Cortana in Halo CE was to protect her. Keyes couldn’t pull the plug on her so he gave her to MC to keep her safe, despite it being a GIGANTIC SECURITY RISK! And some of Johnson’s last words to MC were “NEVER LET HER GO!” How can she, after hearing that and knowing MC and Thel marched into The Maw of a Flood infested MEGA CITY think no one cares for AI?
Even if it’s just a crazed fragment, she’d have to be trying to ignore all of this and so would all the otehr AI across the Halo universe who would of been invaluable during the war and the lose of life to protect them should let them know humans care for a built person. Again the entire purpose of Halo 3 ODST is for Dare to screw up an ODST drop just to save Virgil and get his intel. She botched an entire mission to kill a member Covenant Hierarchy just to help an AI.
A black ops mission no doubt but how many other times did something like this happen through the war? Where dozens possible hundreds f human lives were given to save an AI.
Halo 5 opens with Halsey giving a sullenly proud smile to Cortana, that alone should tell her or this crazed Fragment that people care for AI. So what the hell?
I find it hard to believe that this fragment managed to retain so much of Cortana’s knowledge of all of her and MC’s adventures and her knowledge of Forerunner data but can’t remember the moments humans gave her.
Marines were joyous throughout Halo 2 and CE when they heard Cortana’s voice. How could she translate that as “They only think of me as a slave?”
I really can’t believe that this is 343i’s grand plan for Halo. Something has to be going on, something has to be seriously out of the picture for this to be believed. I can’t only assume that in Awakening the Nightmare we find out that Gravemind has had full control over her this entire time and is playing the galaxy. Allowingthe forerunners machines to be destroyed in a galactic war while also killing billions allowing for easy infections to just spring up.
So, what do you guys think. Is the story direction good or bad?
