Speaking personally, I didn’t enjoy collecting 117 audio logs at all. It was a cool nod to Chief and the logs themselves were entertaining, but I’m always put off whenever a game has a high amount of collectibles that, in the end, don’t affect any gameplay whatsoever. The Batman games, for example, went way overboard with theirs and it annoyed me that Halo 5 followed suit.
Skulls, on the other hand, have always been one of the coolest unique things about Halo. Every game, including 5, has done justice to the concept so I do hope to see that continue.
How about you though? What was going through your mind as you sat there with a long guide on a laptop or phone in front of you?
I wouldn’t mind 117 audio logs. Halo 5 didn’t have too many for my taste.
I do have a way that I play Halo, though. I play through the game with zero mind for collections / achievements. Usually multiple times, just to soak in the story / experience. Then, as an achievement hunter, I slowly pick them off at my own pace. I get months/years behind, but ultimately get them all (still chipping away at MCC, and have a couple left on Halo Wars 2).
I do agree that the skulls are cooler, though.
In the world according to Happy Place, I would prefer a dozen or so terminals with a couple minute long videos in each that expand on the lore introduced in the game. It still requires the player to hunt for something, but each item located holds more value.
Audio logs are great if done right, but 117 logs felt like overkill, and that specific number made me feel like 343 was more interested in filling a quota than creating thought out morsels of valuable information.
I want to see the terminals like in Halo 4, they were all different and some where objects, some where audio logs and some where computers, and I thought that the Forerunner objects were very interesting!
I loved the audio logs, bring em’ on.
