In LNG video where he covers some of the leaks he knew about, he talked about that there was talk of Steve Downes (Master Chiefs voice actor) was looking to retire and Microsoft was looking to replace him. Personally I’m not all that against it. It doesn’t make me happy but I wouldn’t be opposed to it. My only issue is that the characters have to be designed well and 343 needs to be honest about it. What do you all think?

I personally would stop numbering the Halo’s and just do suffixes once Chief is retired/dead. Like instead of Halo 7, it’d be Halo: (Insert Title). That way it’d show a new era of Halo since the Chief is such a pivotal character otherwise. That’d open up a lot of spin-off and indirect sequel opportunities without pulling a Final Fantasy.
I’d be fine if it was a good character, I don’t really have any attachment to chief.
After Halo 6, yes, I’d be fine so long as Chief gets the death he deserves, go out on the highest of notes. But honestly I’d rather have Buck replace Chief than Agent no-personality.

Only if the Master Chief exits the Halo Universe in an Extra Legendary (Mythic) way that immortalizes him in the gaming universe. The Chief has a story that is a long and emotional one, so maybe he deserves an ending that only the Chief deserves. Besides take a look at Halo 5’s plot, 343i pretty much replaced the Chief with Locke, but as we have seen that angered many of us, so maybe his exit might not come yet!

I’m pretty sure 343 announced that they are just using suffixes and not numbers when they announced halo 5

Gradually and with purpose? Yeah, I would be ok with them replacing Chief in the long run. By shoving Locke down our throats all of a sudden for no reason after lying to us and telling us that Chief is still the main character? Hell no.

Well if Sony can say goodbye to Nathan Drake, then I think we can let Chief go.
I think most people would be fine, every story has to end somewhere.
I would be happy with Arbiter solo game.
Only other character with enough history within the games to replace John is Buck. I really think there would be too much of a backlash to anyone else because noone really knows who they are. But even then, can you even consider someone as a replacement Buck isnt a replacement because he is so different? maybe a spin off is due. But then what about the story, it already feels so jumbled and slow, we need alot of solid progression from Halo 5.
Its a million dollar question for sure. I only like Buck in Osiris. Blue team you have.

- Linda. Possibly. People like snipers, shes instantly recognizable. Could lead to a unique campaign with a different approach to the one man army that John is.
But really Blue team has appeared in one lackluster campaign. Not really enough to replace John in the main series games. I def dont think anyone NEW could replace john, I dont see that ending or been received well.

I don’t think so anymore. Chief isn’t quite Microsofts token character anymore. Maybe back in Halo 3 but with how Halo has been recieved lately, I don’t think its the same. They seem to care more about Windows 10 and cross platform gaming.
Seeing as my favourite Halo game from the series Reach didn’t feature Chief (Except for a 1 second cameo), I’d be okay with it.

Considering Microsoft announced they want the Halo franchise to continue for the next 30 years, it’ll be interesting to see what direction they’ll take the chief and the story, and considering how mediocre Halo 5’s story was it can only get better from here, right? right? shrug
Should chief die? nah put him on ice like usual and thaw him out as like a last resort that way he’s always there but not being misused or his story or “arc” or whatever can’t be to F’ed up.
To be honest if they remove chief then there’s really no more story left, the story is supposed to take place from chief’s perspective and it would anger a lot of earlier players if he was replaced

Chief can’t go on forever. He is one of my top three favorite video game characters, but even legends die. I definitely won’t speculate as to his replacement, but I think that perhaps a cool way to honor Steve Downes’ work (it would NOT be Chief without this man’s voice) would be to eventually unmask Chief and have his face modeled after Downes.

…And I might be speculating here, but if you look closely at Downes’ deep-set eyes and the way his brows are shaped, I get the suspicion he may already BE the model for a certain Halo 5 legendary ending scene…

Replace, no. That much is certain. But in future time it isn’t difficult to think that campaigns will feature other Spartans, and John-117 will be MIA with the rest of his S-II ‘family.’
