Let me explain further of what i am trying to portray to you fine folks. Lets say Halo 6 is the end of the Cortana story and the end of this forerunner robot enemies. The thing i realize and that many are starting to come around with is the question of if Master Chief is holding back Halo as a whole. How much longer can the Master Chief stay fresh? When is the right time for 343 and Microsoft to say goodbye to their mascot and move on with the least possible damage in terms of sales? Today i thought about this pretty much since i woke up until now and this is what i am thinking. I think Halo 6 is too early for 343 to part ways with Master Chief regardless of how they do it. I think right now, he is too important for sales of Halo. If 343 were do say goodbye this soon, many would stop playing Halo. But as time goes on, i believe more and more people will be ok with Master Chief being gone because of the endless game ideas that can be successful. For example, Arbiter trilogy, or ODST type games. Hell, maybe even games as far back as the forerunner/human war. I love the Master Chief to death. Always will. But thinking about him being in another Trilogy, another decade of halo games makes me think if he will become dull to me. I think there has to be a time for Halo to move on. I think Halo has to explore different things because the lore is just so massive to just not do anything with. What do you guys think? When will Master Chief become dull? When is the best time to say goodbye to him? Would you be ok with another Master Chief Trilogy or Saga? I am very interested in what you guys think so please hit me with your opinions!
I think I would rather see other unexplored areas of the Halo universe show up in future games with new protagonists. I wouldn’t say an outright no to seeing other games featuring the Chief, but there’s so much potential out there I think it would be a nice change of pace
Of course I’d be ok with that! He’s the hero of the Halo universe.
But the Halo universe is so huge. It’s like Starwars… We all know Luke and Darth Vader right?.. But do you know how awesome it was to play your own character in KOTOR?? Or even The Force Unleashed? That universe is just as big as Halo.
With all the Halo books, imagine playing as a low level Enlisted on the planet Harvest. And the game objective was to fight your way to safety from this new entirely new alien race. The Brutes are stronger, faster, more advanced… There is so much that can be done with other Halo games. We all love the Chief, and I would enjoy playing all the next Halo games staring the Chief… But exploring other worlds and other people’s stories in the Halo Universe would be fun too.
I think Chief for life, but I do also think he needs to go, eventually. Maybe the next game could be something close to Halo Reach?
I honestly think that Chief’s story should end. Come one, he’s been fighting for over 40 years non-stop, possessing all known medals in the entire UNSC (except Prisoner of War). I think Jerome should instead take the spotlight if Chief is to ever go.
If in case he does… I would want to see the Monument of John 117, true Legend of Humanity, overcomer of impossible odds.
Yes I’d be perfectly fine with no more chief and I guess your entitled to your opinion but I didnt play halo 4 campaign because I think chief is getting dull. a lot of people hated halo 5 campaign and while yes it was trash I liked playing as Locke sure he was stale but so is chief, I have never laughed or felt like chief is amazing, I just think he is the character you play as and without luck he wouldn’t be able to do what he does
I’ve been playing halo since the beginning and no matter who you put as the main character I feel like the franchise as a whole is getting stale

I agree with this. He doesn’t have to die in the next game or two, but regardless, I’d like to see unexplored parts of the Halo universe.
I don’t want chief to ever die. I think a halo 3 MIA I would be ok with. Another trilogy could work under the right circumstances but I defiantly don’t want a Locke trilogy. I would prefer a reach style customizable character if they go with a Spartan IV campaign from here out.
I would be ok with another Master Chief Trilogy if it was a reboot. Or if Halo went the Zelda route and every game was really just variations on a theme. No real connection chronologically, but instead they compliment each other’s narrative and tone.
But if 343i decides to do a new Halo Trilogy with John, I would like them to go the Disney Star War route. One core game, followed by a side story, and then just keep alternating.
It could go either or both ways. There’s no reason not to! There’s plenty of games that have had the same main characters since the NES days and plenty that shifted focus. All that really matters is if the games are fun, that’s the bottom line.
I think maybe one more game after Halo 6 with the Master Chief should be his end. Thinking realistically. Steve Downs is getting older. He’s already retired from radio. He’s in his mid 60’s. We wouldn’t want anyone else voicing John. So when Steve is ready to be done voicing John, that should be his end.

James Earl Jones is too old to voice Darth Vader, does that mean it should be the end of that character? The status of the Voice actor shouldnt impact too much on the fate of a character.

ya i completely agree. Halo needs to create new things and move on or delay the Chief stories

Maybe both, but definitely a prequel could be nice.
yeah but in more military styled games like how it use to be. that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see different styled games focusing on different characters though.
I’ve been in support of replacing chief since after H4. There is such thing as milking a character just because they’re iconic and that’s where I see this heading if they keep reusing him as a protagonist. Furthermore as others have pointed out, there’s a lot one can do with halo besides the chief, the space setting alone has much that can be tapped into. Halo doesn’t “need” to revolve around 117 or even other spartan protagonists, you have aliens you can toy around with, other variations of a human soldier from a normal marine to an ODST, etc etc.
my only worry and what has always been that worry is how attached people are to the chief. I won’t doubt that the series would sell less without him, but I see that as a naive fanbase unwilling to see a character slowly fall apart when ideas run short, furthermore I wouldn’t be as opposed to keeping him if halos story stayed relevant to him. Halo 4 was supposed to start his search for “humanity” and life without Cortana, yet they throw all of that away with halo 5. That’s just one example of botching a story up and if that’ll be the case for future stories, then it’s better to start a new with a new cast of characters rather than tarnishing what’s already been in place.
Ill be honest. I’d be happier with more spin off titles to explore this universe better.
I’ll miss chief but sooner or later Halo will have to move on from him.
I’m fine with Master Chief’s story eventually ending but not any time soon. Maybe in a few games. They’d also have to end it perfectly, like something as good as the H3 ending.
