WORRIES ABOUT REACHING ONYX? GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS

So here is the deal. I was ranked Gold to begin with (all this relates to Slayer playlist). I dont mean to sound like a -Yoink-, but i shouldn’t have been ranked Gold. It was way too easy for me, i would have 1st finishes in nearly each game i played solo.
My friends got Platinum, and when i played with them (matched with other platinum) the games were awesome.

Skip ahead a bit, im about to hit Diamond (have not been in platinum long). While i see other Diamond players as a good challenge, i still do decently (positive K/D and positive W/L).
Honestly i feel i am a Diamond ranked player, it’s a real challenge. My concern here is i am SMASHING through platinum very quickly. Diamond will take longer obviously but what happens when\if i hit Onyx?

Ive seen a lot of Twitch and Onxy ranked players on youtube, and they’re amazing players but still get smashed in some games.
I love the competitive nature, but is Onyx really that hardcore?
Once in Onyx you cant get ranked out, will the game be so hard at that level it no longer becomes fun?

I know there are a heap of Onyx players here so n00b me if you want, i dont have an ego problem with my gaming, i honestly want to know what you think.
When does a challenge become too much?

FYI if you read too much into my stats, was platinum 5 when I typed this up, but had disconnection issues (booted out of 3 games) last night and got bumped to 3 I think.

I don’t put to much weight on ranks. I am onyx in ffa. I was placed in onyx from the start. There are games that I do well in and win and there have been games where I got my yoink kicked. So not really sure if there is to much weight to these “ranks”

I am Platinum 2 in BTB and the same thing happens there. Some games I am a beast and some games I am a scrub.

i was put in onyx in team arena and in swat, team slayer and BTB diamond, platinum in breakout, and unranked in ffa. in onyx there’s enough sweat to swim in, diamond slayer is a big challenge if you play solo, I still go positive on average though. onyx in regular slayer is a big challenge if you play solo, at that point you need a full team.

ranks dont mean -Yoink- players have honestly been carried to their ranks while others will give you hell with their deserved ranks. saying this though yes you will find ALOT of sweat in onyx

I agree with this, i’m onyx in FFA and SWAT. I get beat pretty bad sometimes and other times i do amazing. Even playing in platinum or diamond it goes the same way. Ranks don’t seem to matter much, it was this way in Halo 3 too. A good ranking system is hard to find these days.

Yeah I agree, some games are crazy unbalanced. The other night I was in a team with 2 diamonds, 2 high plats and we were V’sing 3 golds and a platinum. No chance really for the other team.

I do have a team, but mostly play solo TBH as they prefer BTB and warzone. Platinum is fine for solo play, but am worried about the higher ranks.

Hopefully I won’t hit Onyx, but by then maybe I’ll have a consistent team.

I have to agree ranks don’t mean anything as long as you are able to carry your own weight, help your teammates and if possible have fun.

I got ranked super low because every game I played in during the unranked matches people kept leaving and I had to literally carry half the time I was playing in them. I just lost like 8 matches in a row because my team kept leaving us near the beginning of the match or just don’t do anything. My teammates also ditch me when I had like 4 people against me. So again ranks doesn’t mean anything. Having good players with you is what counts in my opinion.

I’m currently a diamond 5 and i gotta say, ranks are practically worthless in this game. I’ve seen onyx ppl got 3-17 and golds go 20-0. really i think it’s the whole 10 qualifying matches everyone has to play. it’s broken. for example, in swat my buddy goes 9-1 for those matches and gets diamond. i go 7-3 and get onyx. makes 0 sense. but as for slayer diamond 5 ranking, i’d have been onyx a long time ago if i would stop getting a team as follows: me on top roughly 2.0 kd/r give or tak, next 2 ppl under me barely breaking even, and that one guy who averages a 0.2 kd/r. cant tell you how many games i’ve lost because of this. best part is they’ll be diamonds as well doing worse than golds n plats on the enemy team. i think we need to all start from bronze and work our way up and get rid of the whole qualifying matches thing. oh, and if you’re at the lowest rank in a tier and lose a match, i’m sorry, but you should get knocked out of that tier imo.

Since platinum I’ve frequently been playing against diamond/onyx and even the occasional champion players. It doesn’t make much of a difference if you’re diamond or onyx, you’ll reach a point where you frequently are up against good competitive teams and will be consistently challenged. Unless you’re so good that even at the top you’re not challenged, in which case you have nothing to worry about.

Just play and don’t worry too much about ranks. The whole system is pretty broken anyways and it will reset periodically.

I wouldnt worry, I am at least platinum but cant seem to move up from gold 1, every time I get 3 or 4 straight wins and reach gold 2, they set me up with crap players and get a 5 or 6 loose streak, its gotten to a point where I got 4.0 KD raiting with 27 kills and still dont win the match, I am never below 2nd place (overall, not just my team). I get that its a team game but the ranking should have some individual criteria; 2 against 4 for 90% of the match, final score 40-50, got like 29 kills and 13 deaths, still lost the match, still went from Gold 2 to Gold 1, how is that fair? I dont think the ranking is even remotely adequate and just for pride alone, its an insult that I am in Gold 1 still, only because yes, first time MP player (i never played excep ME3 but that was vs AIs) usually always played campaign and got rid of the game unless it was really good. Anyhow, started slow, been gettin better gradually, makes no sense I am ranked that low. My individual rank depends on my colective performance, its ilogical.

Yeah i have personally carried a lot of matches. I wouldn’t say im incredibly good or anything, ive been the cause of a few losses too… But i seem to carry wins way more than my team mates do. Its hard, but i guess when you get to that higher rank you know you have earned it.

I really love (hate) when a match begins and you are down a player from the start and your team wins. Ive had that happen a fair bit now, its the best kind of win i reckon.
Wont get that in Onyx i bet, well i may not even make it before the season starts anyway. Should hit diamond this weekend anyway, im happy with that

Do you guys think it would help if there were MORE placement matches or everyone just started at bronze? The problem with the second option is it creates a REALLY unbalanced experience for new Halo players, and we really need new Halo fans to keep Halo strong.

Only victory matters in H5, I like it but think is bad for 10 qualify games. In my first breakout game I got 18 kills… and loose.

The skillgap in Onyx is extremly high. In FFA and SWAT, the ranks are broken the most. Almost every half decent player gets put into Onyx in SWAT and FFA, so I wouldnt take those serious unless you are champion.

In Arena and Slayer it works a bit better. You always get challenging matches. But you will need a team after a certain time. I think it will take you forever going from D1 to Onyx just by yourself. You will not be able to completely carry against full teams anymore.

Just have fun grinding and try to improve yourself. From time to time you should watch out for other players around your skill and try to roll as a team.

I doubt that you will reach Onyx before the reset in a few days, but try to run your first 10 games in a team next season and you wont have to grind all the way from Gold1.

In the first 10 placement games, KDA is also a factor. Who you match against as well. After that its Win/lose only.

People that are put in Onyx are definitely quite skilled. I’m a steady Diamond 3 in SWAT and I’d like to make it to Onyx but I’m questioning whether or not I’d like to lately. I usually play solo so even in Diamond I find I either do incredible or terrible game to game. I love SWAT but I don’t want to make it so competitive that it becomes unenjoyable from that point on.

Maybe you should play with your feet since you’re so leet. Nice not so passive brag.

Im hearing you man.

Thanks for all the responses guys, I have a pretty good idea what the higher ranks will be like.

Luckily for me I don’t play much FFA or Swat so the ranks sounds good for the playlists im on. Like I said I do have a team but I’m the only one who loves just standard Slayer so will make it hard for me soon I’m thinking.

Interesting about the placement matches too, I thought it was all W\L, didn’t know other factors came into play. That will be helpful for the season reset, anyone know when that’s happening?

its not. I never noticed any difference playing in platinum, diamond or onyx. I do as good as before.

Ranks in Halo get me no where in life. So what is there too care so much about?
