TL;DR: I’ve seen a lot of talk about ‘bad aiming’ system here on the forums. I agree and I hope 343i addresses the player feedback on this aspect of the Technical Preview and corrects it in future versions.
I’m concerned. I’m enjoying many things about this tech preview. The graphics are great, the sandbox is fun, and I like the overall direction. There’s many more things I like also; however, no matter how many aspects I like, everything in multiplayer can be ruined by something as fundamental as aiming. The aiming in this game concerns me.
I’ve been playing Halo for 20 years now. I’m a veteran (AKA: Old). I enjoyed many hours playing H2 multiplayer. It was my first experience of online MP so as far as aiming, so I had nothing to compare it to. Didn’t seem like it had any issues to me. H2 is my baseline. When H3 came out, I continued on my journey. I don’t recall having any issues there either. The sniper was definitely different. No more side swiping, but that always felt too easy in H2 anyway. Reach was the biggest change. That bloom! It took some getting used to but I ultimately prevailed. Note: there was nothing wrong with tracking or dead zones. Other than the bloom, again, no massively noticeable change in my opinion.
In comes 343i with H4. This was the first Halo I didn’t have time to mess around on. My play time was limited so I meant business. I liked it. It wasn’t 2 or 3 but again, nothing wrong with the aiming. After 262 games (I really didn’t have much time to play this one), my K/D stands at 1.795! To me, that indicates aiming is fine. Then, the first sign of issue, H5. I came to H5 MP a little later as life happens. When I started out, I wasn’t doing well. I remember messing with the aim settings for weeks until I finally found the sweet spot. I’ve racked up roughly the same amount of games as H4 since, at 286, but with a lower K/D of 1.392. That’s not bad, but the point is that I had to tweak the settings a lot. For the first time in the series, the default didn’t feel ‘normal’. It was the farthest away from the baseline yet.
Here we are at Halo Infinite. I managed to play MP this weekend for ~3 hours, and then spent some time with bots and the shooting range. This is the first Halo game that has frustrated me. The aiming could not be further from the baseline (normal). I’m an easy going guy, and I love Halo. LOVE. IT. It’s hard to go wrong and I’ve never felt frustrated at the series in my 20 years of playing. It can only be so fun until missing easy shots starts to get to you. I had to stop playing. I can play MCC as skillfully as anyone. I play every weekend I get the chance to, and I hold a 1.612 K/D. I’m not a bad Halo player. I was still managing to win and go positive in Infinite, so I’m not an angry man on a rant. I’m just making a statement along with everyone else, that I hope 343i takes into account as they continue to improve the game. We’re seeing a Technical Preview here, not even a beta so there’s still time. If Infinite releases with the shoddy aiming I’ve seen this preview, it might be the first Halo title that I ignore. Given the reception, it really seems like there’s something fundamentally wrong with aiming that needs to be addressed.
I’m excited to see the response from 343i in their postmortem blog post, and I’m pumped to experience BTB this coming weekend! – I’ll continue to tweak the aiming config, but like H5, you shouldn’t have to mess with it that much. The default should be much closer to the optimum experience players are looking for.
