Worried I Will Never Get Better

Its been 7 years since i started playing Halo (Halo 3 for console Halos, Halo PC for PC Halo), and I still feel like a newb. I see no improvements. I still enjoy the campaign and firefight, but…the former tends to get repetitive, and the latter wasnt in Halo 4 nor will be in Halo 5, so I wonder…should I leave the Halo fanbase, atleast in terms of gameplay (still will be here for the fiction), because I really am not into PvP.

it doesn’t matter if youre good or bad online, its just a game, just play it and have fun with it

don’t take games (especially matchmaking) too seriously

Right I agree with that. Also there was spartan ops in halo 4. Check that out if you liked firefight.
If you feel that you are not getting any better at pvp then watch some MLG (Major League gaming) tournaments on YouTube they have some really helpful insights. Don’t loose faith my friend we are all in this together.

I used Bungie’s heatmaps and kill statistics to get better. Everytime I died I asked “how could I have avoided that death.” Part of getting good at the game is just not dying as much. Think about it, if you currently average 10 kills and 15 deaths in slayer, instead of trying to get more proficient at killing try to lower your death count to 7. When you go 10 and 7, you may not be a rockstar but you’re contributing at least. Thoughts like this is what led me to have a decent (not saying I’m amazing lol) KDR and Halo skill.

Also, KDR isn’t a good measure of skill, but, that’s another topic.

Frankly I prefer the more fun, casual gametypes like Grifball (though, for whatever reason 343 decided to make it so scoring DOESNT end a round, which is a mistake in my opinion). Reach was pretty great because of all the Custom Games options. Hopefully 343 doesnt forget about us, Halo is great because since Halo 3 its been more than “just an FPS”.

If matchmaking isn’t good for you then you could try getting groups for custom games, make friends. That way utilizing forge you can make and talk with games that can be much more fun orientated rather than skill focused. But don’t leave, thats whats special about Halo it has something for everyone. It has my favorite campaign, multiplayer, shooting mechanics, racing, sports, etc. I myself got good by, starting with my 3 other brothers as noobs, fighting in custom games until we just got better and the skill gap increased. We would make our own maps and switch up teams, it was great in its own way. I’m telling you if you get creative in forge and hook up with people things will get way better than matchmaking.

Problem is this: In order to increase in rank you HAVE to play in matchmaking. Atleast with Reach and 4 we had Score Attack and Spartan OPs.

Couple of things. After seven years you probably aren’t gonna get much “better.” But odds are also good that you’re better than you think. When you start to feel like this game is a sophisticated form of beating your head against a wall then take a look beyond your own skill. Is your internet connection garbage? The importance of decent connectivity cannot be overstated. Sadly, it’s also one of the things that is hardest to remedy, but knowing this is a problem lets you off the hook a little. That’s got to be worth something, right? Next: is your TV set to “game mode?” If your xbox runs through an A/V system before it gets to the TV, is that system set to “game mode?” Any of these issues could account for competence at PvE (campaign & fire fight) and the appearance of incompetence at PvP (matchmaking). Next, if ranking systems are working properly, which they seldom do, then you shouldn’t be having this experience anyway. The highest functioning skill-based ranking is in Halo 4 on the 360. MCC is getting there, but will take a lot more time before it actually works as it should. And anyway, the best practice for Guardians is Halo 4 with a thruster pack. And as someone else already said, H4 spartan ops is a lot of fun - maybe not quite as good as fire fight, but close.

Stick with it, and don’t let multiplayer get in your head. It’s just a game. An awesome game. But a game nonetheless.

I dislike people who don’t take multiplayer seriously, mostly because they just run around a fling -Yoink- at birds.

The fact that your posting this thread suggests I might just like you.

One of my main problems is finding a good sensitivity. Right now I have it on 10 because the others didnt give me enough freedom. Also my favorite weapon in Halo 4 is the Storm Rifle, as it allows me to fulfill a support role and when fired in bursts can last a pretty long time without reloading.

Just practice man.

Also, i usually play solo on Easy (if i just want to explore the level, or, in the case of ODST, find Audio Logs), or Normal (if im actually serious). The only levels I have completed solo on Heroic are Sierra 117, Crow’s Nest, Tsavo Highway, The Storm, and Floodgate. Also, I have completed every campaign on Normal solo EXCEPT for Halo 2.

Geez, well there’s your problem. I play on 3-4 sensitivity, usually not a problem, but you need to be able to aim. Also the storm rifle sucks in Halo 4, using a weapon that does damage and hits its target will play a better support role.

As far as not being serious it depends. Loafers and trollers are a bad version of not taking the game seriously but getting mad over not winning or making a big deal of a death is a bad version of seriousness.

Well Halo 5 war zone has something for all levels of player to do, you could focus on enemy ai bosses or capping points rather than player kills. But just play matchmaking, find people to play with, and have fun.

Sounds like you might enjoy Destiny if you aren’t playing it already, its getting much better and apparently has a worthy storyline coming up. And you can buy the base game with all 3 DLC for 60 bucks.

Does it still have that RNG problem? You know, where loot is based on randomization rather than skill?

You need 10 years of consistent practice at the very least to become a master at Halo. So don’t beat up on yourself. It’s all about practice.

I only required half a year and full concentration while playing.

There is random, and its cruel and inhuman, but you never need any of that stuff to complete anything. There are popular weapons such as fate bringer, Gjallarhorn, Icebreaker but they are never needed to complete an activity, they only make it easier. Running through a raid a couple times will guaranteed give you something cool and useful, maybe not the best immediately, but something to be happy with. There is also a vendor who from fridays-saturdays, on a weekly basis, comes and sells some exotic top tier weaponry. Whatever you heard about having to farm engrams is not a thing anymore, and rewards are getting more objective focused as time goes on. To say the least unless your going to pull your hair out over wanting a select few weapons that randomly drop, which you won’t need, then you shouldn’t have to worry about rng. Just play for fun and don’t let people tell you that you need a Gjallarhorn. But it takes skill to beat the end game activities anyways.

Just an example of rng, I wanted a Gjallarhorn, most popular weapon in the game, really bad and went 250 something hours in game before I got it. But I never got it until I developed the mindset that I didn’t need the weapon and I wouldn’t grind for it, I would just play the game and have fun. I didn’t worry about it and eventually got it.

Also for raids and other end game activities you’ll need to use a website called destiny lfg.net or .com, because it has no matchmaking but for good reason, and if you want your game to be really good then type in no squeakers, always require a mic, whatever preferences you want. I would usually host the game rather than search lfg for one. Also avoid “Need Gjally” posts, those people suck.
