With smart scope gone, how should visor zoom work?

I’m extremely glad that the weird ‘lore-justified’ aim down sights mechanic from Halo 5 isn’t returning in Infinite. With that being said, though, I want to see what y’all think about maybe implementing some new features to the typical visor zoom (the zoom that occurs with any non-scoped weapon, like the assault rifle) we know and love. That sounds a little odd, I know, but I feel like the visor can do a little more than just give us a clearer view of what’s ahead. Maybe it can highlight targets and give us a quick description of them while we’re zoomed in? That’d be a neat thing to have, in my opinion. It’d act sort of like Detective Mode from the Arkham series. Sorry if that sounds stupid, haha—I’m just throwing ideas out there. Any other thoughts for possible new additions?

I like this idea. Basically revert back to what H3 had with the zoom function, but give the player a little more info. A range finder that homes in on enemy targets and key installations like turrets would be very helpful.

Is smart scope really gone? We have barely seen any gameplay footage and the only thing really pointing to smart scope being gone is the demo not including it. just because we haven’t seen it doesn’t mean its not there. Correlation not necessarily meaning causation and whatnot.

You can see the player ‘zoom’ the commando weapon for a brief second in the demo. It’s classic zoom from what I saw.

If they have the zoom from Halo 4 and prior back, I’m fine with just that honestly. Smart-Scope was cool and all but it just felt so weird (and untraditional from a solely gameplay standpoint).

I’m assuming this idea would just be for campaign? I think something like that would be better for just zooming in your your visor, not included in gun zooms. Would kinda be annoying to always see that when zooming in with a gun (the description thing I mean). Honestly I’d rather any automatic or close range guns not have any zoom at all.

I believe so. In the demo, the VK78 Commando uses a full-screen scope rather than ADS. The left trigger is also shown to be the button used to throw grenades, as opposed to zooming in.

you know even classic halo used smart scope right? Only difference is it acted like binocs for anything but precision weapons. It still was lore friendly

It wasn’t called smart scope as that terminology was only invented to excuse adding ADS to every weapon, you can refer to it as zoom since classic Halo didn’t enhance weapon stats like smart scope but rather just increased your vision magnification.

Smart-linking is what the zoom in classic Halo is called. Smart scope is the name of the aim down sights mechanic in H5.

How does no one love Smart Linking on their Smart Glass with their Smart Controller playing in their Smart Spartan Armor?

It’ll probably be as it has always worked up until before Halo 5. Which I’m very happy about, a zoom animation is much snappier and cleaner than an ADS animation, and fits the Halo combat loop and aesthetic considerably better imo

^This, as well as the others!

I just hope the smart-link function in Hi is going to be more inspired by H3 or Reach rather than H4. Have you guys forgotten the black bevels around the scoped area with barely any opacity? It was always there, but it was never as obscured as in H4. Still better than H5’s ADS, sorry, “"smart-scope”", but also a huge step back compared to Reach and prior. Which also sums up Halo 4 as whole anyway.

Even though I’m going to miss the cool-factor of that aiming system, not gonna lie! It was annoying as hell from a gameplay stand-point, but the visual was admittingly one of the better designs by 343i! Only the design though. Range buffs, scope on a sword/hammer, huge models placed in front of you obscuring the vision… C’mon!

I haven’t seen enough to say it’s gone and personally I’d rather it stay then go.

“Smart-link” is a term Bungie coined for the system where the weapon has no physical sight to look through, but the weapon zoom is instead connected straight to the HUD.

“Smart Scope” is 343i’s name in Halo 5 for the gameplay mechanic where the weapon has a physical sight, and zooming in shows the camera look directly through the sight. This is more commonly known as “aim down sights” (ADS). It is the way weapon zoom is animated in most FPS games.

They are deceptively similar terms, but describe two completely opposite ideas. Classic Halo does not have “Smart Scope”. Halo 5 is the only Halo with “Smart Scope”.

Should smart-scope be fully debunked, then maybe a tactical zoom function would be a welcome idea. Because this is more open world, akin to ODST, having a way to zoom in on prospective targets such as weapon emplacement, waypoints, and maybe areas of interest, be displayed through the VISR mode, then it would give players more tactical options for engaging targets and allow for more exploration.

This would also reduce map menu bloat with numerous icons and clutter. Giving a more seemless field of view for the player.

Doesn’t the demo show classic zoom function that was present in every FPS Halo bar 5?

I loved Smart-scope and i give 343 credit for trying something like that in a halo game. I think they pulled it off well in H5.

Hard Disagree

I respect your opinion, it might have not felt like classic Halo, but I liked it.
