An open world RPG at that; what do you think we’ll see? I actually think an open world RPG could open up a lot of doors for gameplay. Quests, adventures, loot hauls, or even Fireteams of friends that can explore the vast of the ring Infinite takes place on. I’ve always been a fan of RPGs and MMOs, so seeing one of my all time favorite franchises potentially doing the same makes me…Excited.
Hell, 343 could even do raids if they wanted. Not that I’d know what to specifically do a raid about, but the possibility is there. Three things thing I hope they do do, if Infinite is an RPG/MMO, are:
-The proximity based voice chat system. That could really add a lot to the depth of the setting on Halo Infinite. Meeting new Spartans (aka players) while exploring the ring outside of the main campaign. Which brings me to my second wish…
-When playing outside of the campaign with Chief, I hope we play as our Spartans we made. I write stories a lot, and I like crafting characters, so I’d love to have my own Spartan explore a world and build relationships with the people I meet.
-Public event style encounters. If Halo Infinite is an RPG/MMO like Destiny or WoW, then this would do nicely. How cool would it be to have your Fireteam of friends prepare themselves and fight a Hunter squadron; then while you’re fighting, you see another team fight alongside you!
These are only a handful of wishes, but you get my point.
What would you like to see?

There was a job opening someone saw where 343 was looking for someone with senior RPG experience.
Frank O’Connor said exploring will be rewarded.
Both hint (the first is almost a blatant detail) at the potential for an RPG/MMO game. I say I can dream on.

That’s why I said the RPG/MMO thing is potential.
I rather see an end to Chief’s story before such a game was made. I don’t think the technology is there for a RPG/MMO yet. I think too much would be scarified to make it work. Plus Bungie, 343, and Ensemble have failed at making a good boss fight. Ensemble probably being the worst since their Halo MMORPG was canceled. The sandbox would have to add even more weapons and be balanced for both PVP and PVE. Which most Halo campaigns have some weapons changed for better encounters in missions like the Sniper rifle in the Jun mission in Reach. It would also require that enemies don’t drop their weapons anymore limited the encounters one can have and limit players to loot drops.
From what I took from RPG elements is more likely the Open World mechanics akin to Far Cry. Capture forerunner com towers, recover supplies for marines, kill wild life for food for the marines, rescue marine survivors, target covenant/created/banished or whoever VIPs, bases, etc. The RPG mechanics will probably be simple dialogue between the new AI and maybe marines.
Though I really hope they don’t go full RPG on a mainline halo game or well Chiefs last mainline game before he either dies or retires. Maybe the game after Infinite they either resurrect Ensemble’s idea or make a Destiny clone where Infinity is the hub world. I really hope that 343 worked more on AI, going back to the open sandbox, and going back to the four pillars of Halo Guns, Grenades, Melee, and Vehicles.

I don’t think that relates to H:I specifically because Infinite would have already passed the development stage of turning it to a RPG/MMO game. Perhaps though it’s for another new Halo spinoff game. In which case I’m all for because the vast lore of Halo can easily support a game of that caliber.
Anything is up for grabs in terms of what this game will be since we have no actual footage of what the gameplay will be. I’m a big no for RPG though. I’m open to the campaign being more open world but this is an arena FPS and should stay as such
For the moment, we have no idea of how Halo: Infinite will play.
Hiring an experienced RPG-programmer could mean a variety of things. More open world, akin to that of CE had. It is said exploration is rewarded, so maybe there’ll be more to do on each level of the game. I hold my doubts, in regards to 343 wanting to drastically change the Halo formula that much, when their last two games weren’t AS well recieved, as Halo 3 for example.
We have to wait and see footage. There will most likely be something at E3 this year.
I just want a nice mix of DOOM 2016 exploration, Silent cartographer, Sierra 117, Rats nest, Oni sword base, and AOTCR. with some of halo 4s excellent cinematic opening pizaz like the zero-g BR.
All the quote-unquote RPG elements should be put into a real expansion of the Spartan ops concept which was a pretty Destiny move before 2 years D1 even launched but needed more resources. Give us a hub on infinity and use it between campaign and MP missions, a breakout style target practice for custom load outs and a Break out kill house that can be updated an even feature community content with leaderboards. A launch bay where we can mess around with mongeese and enter certain pelicans to go into Arena, SPOPS, warzone etc. obviously the start button would have a faster standard menu option for everything. The armor frames can be used to customize like the end scene in halo 4. a recreation room with Basketball hoops, T cup area, grif ball/ricochet arena and a gym. let us interact with Roland and the crew. Unlock new Voice over announcers like in Titanfall 2. Get weekly objective like beat bucks best time, get more headshots in the arena than Palmer etc. Give us a cool set of military-themed emotes to use in the carnage report and in machinima. Give us a cool VR room holodeck for war games the displays real-time stats and leaderboards. use the assets for in-engine cutscenes and then build new firefights that double as raids. A terminal that lets us read the codex, listen to audio logs and watch the terminal videos in the game.
I believe the game will not be an RPG like you think just follow a more open-ended reactive mission structure closer to the mantra of Bungie level design but on modern tech with greater scale.
If H6 is an open world game/RPG I hope it’s not an MMO. I want a personal experience, not a bunch of people running around in my game. That’s something I wouldn’t mind for a spin off, but not H6.
I doubt they’d pervert the mainline series Into a full on RPG/mmo. At what point does Halo not become Halo? Cause that’s what this would do .I’ve no interest in the main series doing this and it just adds ammunition to my statement of changing for the sake of change 🤷. They’re not even trying to hold their original audience if they go this route. A spin off is one thing but to see people excited about a mainline game ruining franchise consistency? Makes no sense…
At best I’d expect some simple elements and nothing else. H5 already played around with an open world vibe, I’d assume they’ll continue off that, doubtful we’ll see them push it like destiny or Skyrim but with guns.
I’d rather they build off H3 gameplay wise and refine things, then you have your campaign being linear but with some areas that can be interacted in different ways on your encounters. Open world or RPG aspects just isn’t what I want in Halo.

In regards to the job listing, that was for a managerial/team lead position, so it’s not like it would be a job where someone was doing a lot of their own coding. Asking for someone with experience in another genre doesn’t automatically mean that the game will have elements of that genre.
It’s also worth noting that Frankie’s comment doesn’t necessarily mean open world, either. Halo 5 rewarded exploration with hidden high-tier REQ weapons in campaign and alternate routes through engagements. Previous Halos encouraged exploration through skulls and other types of collectibles. You can have linear levels that reward exploration; that’s something Halo has long done.

To be honest, I really hope Halo doesn’t copy/paste games like Destiny. So no random rolls on guns, no dancing or emotes.
It would be nice to see an open world though. And I would like to see proximity based voice chat (Destiny should have that).
