Will your allies actually be useful in H4?

I’ve played through all the Halo campaigns and enjoyed every single one of them. However, there is something that irks me about campaign: the UNSC soldiers that accompany you. They really annoy me and feel like they belong in Bad Company (for those of you who don’t know, in the Battlefield: Bad Company games, “Bad Company” is where the army sticks all the misfits, comedians, and troublemakers). Here are my reasons:

  • They have overly obnoxious, cocky dialogue that reminds me of the CoD punk brats who still talk trash after they get a 1:4 KD ratio. They act like the war is a joke. Kind of sad because the voice acting is very good in itself.
  • They’re useless as combatants and only good for temporary distractions. In Halo Reach it takes like 8-10 army troopers combining fire to neutralize one Elite even on the lower difficulties.
  • Adding on to my previous point, they really can’t aim or drive. I’ve seen them shooting at walls and driving off cliffs.
  • They lack situational awareness and any semblance of intelligence. It’s so stupid how they actually seem to dodge the player’s shots/vehicles more than they do the Covenant’s.
  • They betray the player or other allies. It’s not even accidental friendly fire. I once got run over by a Marine on Tsavo Highway, which effectively ruined my attempt at a no-death Legendary run of that particular mission.

To make a long story short, I don’t want the friendly AI to do all the work for me but I would highly enjoy it if they didn’t act like stupid, snobby teenagers who weren’t combat-trained.

Eh, I feel like it would take away from the game for me. Either you have “By myself, I killed 10 elites on legendary” or “I killed 4 legendary elites, and my marines killed the rest” Also, the Prometheans and Covenant should be beasts, they are greater physically than humans. Maybe if your allies are Spartan IVs then sure, they should be almost as good as the Chief.

I agree. The Friendly A.I really needs buffing. A lot of buffing.

Firstly, they shouldn’t run into the middle of the fire and get themselves killed.
They should be able to aim. They should be able to make damage.
That is the beginning. It is what is bugging me the most currently.

(by the way, I like how their dialogue, 343i shouldn’t change it, it is how it always was)

I’m fine with the way the soldiers act, they add a bit of humor and flair to the game.

I am not, however, fine with their uselessness in gameplay. I can count the times I’ve actually witnessed a marine actually kill an enemy while playing Halo. I really hope they fix the AI in this one, especially the driving AI.

Well, I did say that I didn’t want them to do all the work for me, I just want them to have some semblance of usefulness.

Also, Covenant species and Prometheans are greater physically than humans, but not necessarily greater intellectually.

It sure would be nice to have an AI that was useful. I rather have 1-2 AIs that did their job, then 32 marines that suicide within the first 5 secs. No need to let the AI do “all the job”/get the glory, but on easy/normal at least, Ai should be good. Heroic, they and even Legendary they should still serve a purpose.
The Ai may for example attract attention/enemy fire so that you can get a few seconds to recharge your shield/reload. IF you pop a shield, they can get a HS now and then, not steal all kills, but at least help you to kill the enemies.

I really hope so. But thats why take advantage of playing with my friends online.

I’m all for marines being almost/just as useful as allied elites in Halo 2/3. At least they could kill things on Legendary.

Well, I like their dialogue, it adds “flavor” to the game. But their aim could use some improvement. A lot of improvement. They shouldn’t throw grenades at me and kill me, and they shouldn’t fire turrets in 3 round bursts.

I get what you mean. The AIs soemtimes gets on your nerves, specially the allied ones, but Halos Ais are proberbly one of the best ever created. If only the enemy Ais are also used for the Allied ones, but you can see why they didnt do that, cos they dont want the Ai players driving through the campaign for you and that you have to put some effort in. The Enemy AI is really good though.

I salute you OP!!

They should at least be controllable. I could care less if my buddies could kill really well (10 legendary Elites these days = 5 legendary CE Grunts).

I just don’t want them getting in my way or being there just to make gameplay even more harder (i.e. ruining stealth, directing enemy fire towards me, taking too long to give me their gun).

My most recent setup attempt in H3 was excruciating thanks to Arby refusing to stay down (he also does this on The Storm, even though there’s a big, huge Hunter sitting right next to his corpse).

That explanation is and always has been a bad reason suggested by many people.

It’s clear Bungie didn’t want the player to have fun in H3 and afterward. In H2, I was being safely driven by the Sergeant who offered me the turret on the gauss hog with the occasional flips. In H3, it was suicidal accepting the gauss hog from the marine on The Ark. And in Reach, never let the AI even touch your vehicle.

And no, the enemies are bad, cheating, and vastly inferior to CE and H2 enemies, who took cover, understood persistence & aggression, and were worthwhile adversaries once one got to know them.

The enemies in newer Halo games have massive flaws since they are around the power level of a CE Zealot instead of being reasonably efficient. They often have the game holding their hand and just about every way of fighting them is unbearable.

They could just re-use the driving ai from the elites in halo reach

Probably not, on normal they will probably be descent support, on Heroic, Mythic, or Legendary they will be completely worthless(again). I hope that the spartan-IV’s aren’t like noble team(Who are useless and seem only good at betraying you).

They are duds for me most of the time. They do act as good damage sponges however…

I don’t know how they will function in Halo 4. Hopefully 343i knows that friendly A.I. in past Halo games is painfully stupid. And I hope we can have useful allies in Halo 4.

To me that was one of Halo’s charms. Your allies are completely useless. Except in Reach. And Noble team is only useful in the fact that they don’t die (Also known as won’t cease to exist so you can play how you want) Other than not dieing though they were more useless than marines, more annoying than marines, and they also killed me more than marines. “Hey George? I’m in the middle of assassinating this elite ok. My health is pretty low and I have no shields… CAN YOU STOP SHOOTING???” I never made the mistake of letting the AI Drive either. It’s not Halo 2 in New Mombasa where Sergeant Stacker knew what he was doing. I let them try when I first got the game on tip of the spear. I ended that experiment when Kat sat there for five seconds doing god knows what and then tried to drive through a guard rail and off the cliff beyond said guard rail. Thank you Bungie for putting the guard rail there.

Edit: If AI for Halo 4 are useful to the point where I think the marine who just took out 5 promethians with one well placed frag should take the chief’s job so John can retire, then I will betray them using their rage induced franzy for combat training

I don’t expect too much better in their driving skills, but damn they need to smarten up on how to shoot.

Being able to look at an enemy, any type, and honk the horn so that that becomes the primary focus, and the gunner doesn’t wait up to 4 seconds and many missed oppourtunities to shoot, and the gunner doesn’t fire in very short bursts with long pauses between shooting, well that will go a long way to making driving a 'Hog more enjoyable with AI passengers.

On foot, fire more coordinately on enemies, be them mine when I’m close, each other’s when I’m not so close. They’ll still fall but they’ll die smarter… Oh and don’t shoot me!!! Not sure how you can to that one though (friendly fire on after all).

I like their cocky dialogue and over the top Australian accents C:
It adds some comic relief to the game, and since we’re probably not going to get talking grunts it’ll be awfully quiet and dark if they aren’t in there. Perhaps it could just be for the IWHBYD skull.

Their AI definitely needs a boost though. A very, very big boost.

I hope to Cthulhu they fix the AI. I just finished playing Halo 3’s Campaign again for kicks and although its AI isn’t the best in the world, they are definitely superior to Halo Reach’s AI for sure. The thing I hate the most about Reach’s AI is the fact they can’t shoot enemies from a certain distance when in a vehicle. In Halo 3 you can plant yourself on a ridge and watch the passenger fire rockets at the enemy but in Reach they just sit there. Of course the enemy AI is able to fight from that distance though so your gunner and passenger just chill there getting shot without returning fire. Idiots!

Noble Team also made it more difficult to get Rocket guys in the passenger seat as well. You give a guy a Rocket in Halo 3 and several minutes later when a vehicle shows up they know right away that they should be the passenger. But in Reach they get on the gun because Kat, (it’s usually Kat), gets the passenger seat. Then you have to tell them to get out and hope they know they should switch places or something. It’s annoying. Very very annoying.

Noble Team themselves were very annoying. It took them forever to kill the easiest targets, probably because they were invincible. You know the Arbiter couldn’t be “killed” but he could be knocked out. While he was awake he was a total killing machine but if he got overwhelmed he would get knocked out and wouldn’t come back until the area was clear. He was a big help without doing all the work. That’s how important characters should be in Halo 4. Don’t make them idiots.

The AI needs to prioritize targets as well. If I’m driving past a Wraith the gunner should know to shoot the Wraith, not pick off Grunts running around in terror. They’re not the immediate threat!

If the Halo 4 friendly AI’s are like Reach’s friendlies… I will face plant a hot pie…
