Will we finally learn who the Guardians are?

Starting with Halo: Combat Evolved, and throughout multiple Halo titles since, I have been one of the unfortunate players who has been “Killed by the Guardians.” I wonder if we will finally learn who the Guardians really are, and how they can randomly kill Spartans.

As I write this, I realize it is kind of humorous, but is there actually a possibility that Halo 5: Guardians has anything to do with the hidden Guardians who killed me at random times. Could be a cool canon element to the Halo series!

Very simply, the “Killed by the Guardians” text appears when a player dies and the game doesn’t know who to credit the kill to, so it goes to the Guardians.

Oh, I know. I’m very well-versed. I think it would be funny if they brought that in as an easter egg, though.

Well, you might just gave them an idea.

Or they already gave themselves that idea.

I think the Guardians will probably end up being Chief and Locke.

An interesting alternative: What if the giant forerunner machine in the trailer is one of many Guardians?

I think guardians refer to humanity in general, and more specifically probably chief and Locke. As more and more story comes out it seems as though chief is destined to be a “guardian” of the universe

You may be on to something. But the guardians were originally the Forerunners (who are re-emerging in the Reclaimer Saga). In the end of Halo 4 you heard the Ur-Didact ominously declaring humans as the greatest threat in the galaxy to an unknown audience… Assumedly the Ur-Didact was intercepted in slip space on his trip back to Requiem by Juridicials. He appears to be on trial, attempting to justify his actions to fellow Forerunners. Therefore if he is successful we can anticipate a reemergence of aggressive Forerunners (possibly re-igniting the Human-Forerunner War). Regardless every sentient species will undoubtably be forced to unite against the Flood at some point… The last issue of Escalation ended showing an infected UNSC Spirit of Fire (SoF) vessel drifting haplessly toward a planet (with an ocean and assumedly life which was about to be turned into a Flood planet). This is definitely foreshadowing a return of the Flood- more powerful than ever if they have time to freely evolve on an entire planet and now they possess access to slip-space travel with the SoF.

Therefore to me, I think “Guardians,” will eventually become every sentient being remaining in the galaxy as all life will be thrusted into an all out battle for survival against the Flood. Sentient life will be forced to unite against the Flood - united they stand or divided they will fall. You already heard the Arbiter telling Agent Locke that “all our lives are at stake.” Anyway I admit I may be a little off base with this prediction but this is just the best educated guess I can make at this point.

I think the guardains in the game refere to those who fight for all life in the unvrse and not just their faction. People like

Thel, Master Chief, Iso-Didact and Locke (probably).

I would suspect that the Guardians would be the Forerunners as in the ending of Halo 4, Didact says “we are the guardians of all that exists” or something like that. It may have been a story element they’ve been planning to let loose this far into the story but have only made it into the past games in the form of the “killed by the Guardians.”
