Will the Master Chief follow orders?

The Master Chief is loyal to Dr. Halsey. She made him a Spartan, gave him purpose and in a way he sees her as a ‘mother’ figure. Now with all that has gone on with him and Cortana in Halo 4 and 5. When, not if Dr. Halsey tells or orders him, depending on how you look at or how it goes, to kill Cortana will he do it? Will he follow orders like a good soldier? Or will he resist, or refuse? How, if he does, will he argue in Cortana’s defense ?

He’ll do whatever is right. Considering the current state of things, there’s no reason why he’d hesitate in fighting against Cortana to protect everyone else.

John’s primary loyalty is to the UNSC and the UEG citizens. He will always do the right thing.

This all comes down to what Cortana asked him in Halo 4. “Which one of us is human and which one of us is the machine.” Yes people can say that he’ll be protecting humanity by killing Cortana but can he just go up to her and just pul the trigger? Not that a bullet in her head would have any effect on her. Stopping her doesn’t necessarily mean killing her out right. That would go against his morals and honor. He will get the job done just not a ‘MASTER CHIEF SMASH!!!’ sort of way.

I don’t know, on one hand I want him to disobey orders, let his emotions get to the best of him. However on the other hand I wouldn’t mind him not disobeying orders. Because it’s either that he is human in a sense or a machine. If he has to destroy Cortana because she has endangered humanity then yes totally obey orders, but if there is a way to get her out of this becoming a God condition them yes totally disobey orders so this way John could save her. I like to think it of this way, John is a human being with emotions. Master Chief is a soldier built for combat but without any emotions and just gets the job done. I’m not sure, I think I’m fine with it either way. Because even if Master Chief had to destroy Cortana it would still be a touching moment.

He will do what is necessary to complete the mission. With that said however, I think he will try and save cortana and give her a second chance if he is offered the opportunity. Maybe wipe her memory or contain/arrest her.

If he was prepared to forgive her after she killed thousands of people with the Guardians and about to conquer humanity then I don’t see why he would change his mind now. Even then he was still saying “Come home with us, its not to late to stop this.”. So it seems clear cut that if that man is given any way out he will take it.

It entirely depends on if the UNSC will even be in a position to destroy Cortana or if they still aware she is alive. Its far more likely that 343 will avoid this conflict of interest in order to keep the Chief with the UNSC. Think how things didn’t get violent after he defied Del Rio in Halo 4; that sort of machination.

So I think this plays out in three ways:

  1. Cortana stays in the Domain.

So the UNSC can’t kill her and the Chief doesn’t need to make a decision. Either because she is imprisoned, changes her mind, cured of rampancy etc etc. The point is that they can’t actually kill her so Chief never faces that question.

  1. Chief lies

Lets say that somehow the Chief is able to get Cortana onto a datachip. Well, he can pretty easily hide her and she isn’t a threat to anyone irrespective of the circumstances. As far as the UNSC is concerned Cortana must have died and that’s the end of the matter. Which allows Chief to defy the UNSC without leading to a violent confrontation.

  1. The UNSC doesn’t want her dead

Maybe ONI wants to experiment on her. Maybe they think they can unlock this power for humanity. This could also be a variant of option 1 if humanity gains control of the Domain itself.

Personally I think that they will go with option 1 because I think Cortana isn’t fully cured of rampancy. So when she is cured she will realize all the horrible things she has done and want to seal herself away like Mendicant Bias as self inflicted punishment. The other options have a few issues. I don’t think Cortana can survive outside the Domain and the Domain is simply too powerful for humanity to gain control of without ending the setting.

I mean the very fact the Warden (a villain) accuses the Chief of wanting to kill Cortana seems to suggest that he very much won’t do that if asked. Villains can’t be right.
