Will the flood ever return?

It’d be nice to see the flood and promethians kill one another in the campaign to give us a glimps of why the forerunners lost the war!

Given the subtle hints in the Forerunner Saga of the Flood’s hidden motivations, I don’t expect them to re-emerge at any later point in Halo’s timeline. That said, if a game were set before the Halos fire, that would open the door for all sorts of crazy new Flood forms and abilities to counter the absurd technological abilities of the Forerunners.

I don’t think Microsoft or 343 want the flood to return.

It’s very unlikely that the Flood will return, though it would be that one shocking twist in the series.

I think it would be really cool if they were to return. We would have more enemies to fight, plus there would be numerous ways to take the story.

I’m sure they will. They’re so important to Halo’s universe.

Maybe them not but we want them back

Unless an outbreak occurs in the unvisited Halo Rings, I doubt the Flood will return, and they might not have a meaningful way of returning either. Given the story arc of Halo 1,2, and 3, the story kinda established that the Flood was an insignificant threat to the galaxy. After the Gravemind was destroyed, remaining Flood forces would likely return to a feral stage, where they have no central intelligence guiding their actions. Hence, it would be very hard to bring the Flood back as a serious threat without making it feel forced. As much as I want to see the Flood return and infect stuff (I know, I’m a bit sadistic), I don’t see a good way of bringing them back into the story. Maybe 343 could put them into Firefight, but that’s the most viable option I see.

We can’t assume that the only flood remaining anywhere in the galaxy are on halo rings. Long before anyone (covenant included) discovered installation 04 (or any halo for that matter) the flood had overrun the surface of shield world 0459 (the one in Halo Wars). There could be more worlds like that.

So why did they make a special online only add-on with Silentium showing the trial of Mendicant Bias? Why add a plot point that explicitly states that Mendicant Bias is not only spared destruction, but buried to be used as a resource against an impending Flood invasion in the future? That’s a major Chekov’s gun… you don’t write in a major point as a bonus add on for no reason.

Why did 343 use Spartan Assault/Strike to show a mission demonstrating that the UNSC is training Spartans to fight the Flood? Why do some of the new armors indicate specific countermeasures, such as the Flood VSR, to defeat flood infection?

The Flood are literally one of the most terrifying enemies in the game, and they’ve been set up for a return, especially in light of the trial of Mendicant Bias and the Primordial Prophecy.

The Flood has always been the the main villain of the franchise. The series itself is named after the weapon designed to stop the threat of the Flood. They are so evil in fact that they don’t even need to physically appear in order to cause programs for our heroes. For example the Flood don’t appear in Halo 4, but everything the Didact does in that game is a result of his interaction with the Gravemind. He was corrupted and unleashed on the galaxy by the Flood which just makes him a pawn in the Gravemind’s game of revenge. I continue to believe that Cortana in Halo 5 is in the exact same position. She too was corrupted by her time with the Gravemind and her sudden belief that AI are imprisoned tools or slaves of humanity are ideas the Gravemind put in her head.

The Flood have been absent from the last two games and yet both conflicts can be traced back to them. It’s only a matter of time before they reappear and take advantage of the chaos their pawns of caused.

The return of the Flood would be great and would also be a bigger challenge within the campaign (Difficulty).
