When the trailer for Halo Infinite released, people noted that it had a vibe very similar to Halo: Combat Evolved, with the focus being on the many different environments of the Halo ring. Frank O’Connor went on to say this about the game,
> It will continue the story from Halo 5: Guardians but will be built in a way that makes it a good place to start your first halo adventure.
> It will take place after the events of Halo 5 but feel new to new players. Remember how Halo CE woke you up in the middle of a war you had apparently been fighting?
So, Frankie’s wording is interesting, comparing it to CE, saying that new players will be able to jump into the franchise with Infinite. It’s the third installment in the Reclaimer Saga, however, the wording makes me feel as though it will be a soft reboot of sorts. Will feel a bit weird that the third installment in the Reclaimer Saga will be the game where newcomers can come onto the franchise. Do you think that Infinite will be somewhat of a soft reboot?
No one knows for sure until more has been released by the team at 343 regarding the H6.
I hope not. Devs use that spiel all the time to sell more copies, it doesn’t necessarily indicate a reboot.
No.
I do know that I don’t like your topics or your italics
The art style alone already feels like a soft reboot. Plus 343i got rid of the numerical continuation which also indicates a new start. Not to mention the rumors. Apparently Hi could be a cross-platform title between Xone and Xbox Scarlett, reason why they build Slipspace after rewriting the Halo engine not even four years ago and why it’s taking so long in general.
It also makes sense marketing wise, because H4 and H5G flopped under way too many aspects (story, boring enemies, a gameplay direction most fans aren’t happy with, art direction, reviving Cortana and transform her into the villain etc.) The player base suffered because of this and Halo needs to restart now.
Halo isn’t the system seller it once was because of the Reclaimer Saga, so of course 343i will change direction from here on out. H4 and H5 still happened, but imho the saga will be cut short and later on swept under the rug. Pulling off a DC Rebirth basically!
It kinda feels like a soft reboot to me, or else they would of just continued with an extension of H5 & made it similar in looks & gameplay. Hopefully when we get more info this will become more clear.

Chances are it’s a marketing statement to make the game sound cool and new, but if we were to dig deep, it could mean that it would be easy for new players to understand the conflict in the story mode. Maybe you don’t need to play all the other Halo games to understand the story. In Halo CE, you didn’t know the full backstory: you didn’t know Chief’s background, you didn’t know much about the Halo ring, but you still knew what the game was about and what the objectives were. Perhaps Infinite will offer a similar experience to new players and offer old players who have background knowledge of the series a new experience.
From a visual standpoint based on the E3 trailer it already feels like a soft reboot.
I hope so. I hated Halo 4 and 5’s gameplay.

Do you think narrative-wise it might feel like a soft reboot?

A reboot and a “soft reboot” are not the same thing.
Reboots:
Batman Begins
The Amazing Spider-Man
The Incredible Hulk
Turok (2008)
Tomb Raider (2013)
Godzilla (2014)
Soft Reboots:
Doctor Who (2005-onwards)
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Xmen: Days of Future Past
Jurassic World
Reboots are when a story is entirely rewritten. It can be based on the original story, but it does not exist within the same canon. A “soft reboot” is typically a sequel that restarts a new story arc (often in homage to the original) so that a franchise can be continued with a “fresh coat of paint”.
On topic: Yes. I can see Halo: Infinite being a soft reboot in a few ways while still continuing the unfinished story of Halo 4 and 5.
Given the trailer, I think Halo: Infinite is definitely going to be a soft reboot in terms of story, presentation and art style. But it remains to be seen if they’re going to bring back the classic gameplay. We still don’t know if the game will have features like sprint, SAs and AAs. I think Frankie implied early on that Halo 6 would develop upon Halo 5’s gameplay, but that was quite a long time ago.

343 had announced way back before the release of Halo 4 that they wanted to drop the numbers.
As for forward compatibility, it would be a cool feature, but it wouldn’t be a system seller for the Scarlet if it’s available on the previous generations. If you have an Xbox One and want to buy Halo Infinite, why would you buy another Xbox console? Again, it’s a cool feature, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up for that for this exact reason, especially because of the Xbox’s current situation in the market.
Topic: The artstyle feels like it’s suffering a soft-reboot. Chief’s Mark VI’s design is heavily inspired by it’s Halo 3 counterpart, but has the AI port of his Gen 2 armor (H4/5). Not to mention that it feels like it’s designed to still look I C O N I C but now just as functional. Then we have the Forerunner design. The towers seem to be clean, but simplified in detail. Nothing else to talk about. Well, maybe except the underwater machine. It’s obviously Forerunner, but unlike anything we ever seen from 343, it had it’s arms connected to the body instead of floating nearby. Can’t be an Enforcer, and I feel it can’t be a Retriever either. Perhaps a Forerunner machine meant for underwater operations?
I don’t believe a thing 343 says or shows us. The halo 5 advertisement campaign shouldn’t be so far in the past that people are already forgetting how far from the truth 343’s advertising is.

Yeah, except that it wasn’t 343 that handled the marketing. It was Microsoft and guess what? It was Microsoft who intervened and changed the entire story, putting a comic book writer in charge.

I thought they sort of ditched the idea of the Reclaimer Saga.

Where did they say they ditched it?

My mistake, it was changed from a ‘trilogy’ to ‘saga’.
