Will Halo 3's forge really be upgraded?

One thing I have been hearing a lot recently is that because Halo 3 and 4 are on the XB1 now they should be getting big upgrades to their forge modes. This includes things such as including phased/fixed options to Halo 3’s forge or increasing the budget and pieces count on the forge for both 3 and 4.

Now as much I would love this to happen (I am a forger myself), I really don’t think they will make many changes at all other than just technical things. What I see them doing is just fixing any frame rate problems and different glitches as well as raising the object* and lighting limits.

I would imagine adding adding any extra options into Halo 3 means 343i would have to change the engine a bit and I really don’t see them doing that with them emphasizing original engines and gameplay for their respective games. Plus it would be a little strange to hop into a game of Sandbox and see phased objects sticking out everywhere and floating in strange places.

With all that said, I do actually have high hopes for H2A’s forge because of it being a native XB1 engine using a hybrid of Halo 4’s engine I reckon this forge mode will have lots more budget and pieces than the others.

So am I just being too pessimistic? or Do you also believe that Halo 3 and 4’s forge won’t receive any major upgrades? I would like to see everyone’s
opinions on this.

  • Don’t confuse this with the piece count limit, in case you’re not sure what this is the object limit is an invisible limit where you literally can’t fit any more blocks on the map after you place a large amount of pieces. This is especially bad when making BTB maps that needs lots of spawn points as well as using any modded canvases.

Will they upgrade Forge? Nothing has been said yet.

Is it feasible for Halo 3’s Forge to be upgraded to be more in line with the features found in Reach or Halo 4? Yes. Halo 3, Reach, and 4 are all based off of Halo 3’s engine (the graphics engines are different, but the gameplay engines are closely related), so backporting features is possible.

Nothing has been confirmed in that area. The only thing we know for sure that is happening with 3-4 is 1080p and 60fps

Increasing the budget would be all I would want to be honest. Anything extra will be appreciated as long as it doesn’t take away from the current forge that I know and love.

The only updates Halo 3 and 4 are confirmed to be getting are to their lighiting, upscaled to 1080p and 60FPS and (as stated by Frank O’Connor in an E3 interview) minor fixes to some small bugs and glitches in Halo 3’s Forge. I don’t think they will be adding in any extra forging options if they have already said they games will be on disc as they are right now with there latest TU.

I agree. If all they did was increase the memory budget that would be so epic.

The new lighting sounds awesome. Lighting can go a long way into making even older games look better with the higher detail shadows and light. Just take a game like Skyrim for example. The vanilla lighting compared to adding a simple ENB lighting mod makes that games look so different it’s a contrast between night and day. I can’t wait to see Halo 3 screenshots or video, so far we’ve not got to see anything and I’m looking more forward to Halo 3 than H2A honestly.

Now that you mention it, that would be pretty cool for them to add phasing in Halo 3’s forge mode. Just tweaks like that would put a new dynamic spin on the game and even create better community maps that in turn - extend overall game life. :open_mouth:

I really do hope that forge can be more modernized in these games, but i doubt they’ll do anything to the modes. Halo 3 already had plenty of cool community creations and Im sure people have made interesting 4 maps as well, but customs arent as popular on it so I wouldnt know. People will probably end up remaking the same gametypes and maps with or without modernized forge(especially in 3). H2A forge should be promising though.
