Will Armor Coatings replace Red vs. Blue in MP?

So, what happens with the traditional Red vs. Blue teams in multiplayer matches, now that that component of Halo is going to be free to play and 343 wants to sell us Armor Coatings so that we can customize our Spartans?

I think Red vs. Blue is a much better option for gameplay and accessibility reasons since we can identify an enemy with a quick glance. That is specially important for a game where friendly-fire is enabled and killing your comrades can get you kicked out of the match and temporarily banned, and I believe using another kind of marker, like an outline over the other players is a bad solution.

But then again, why would anyone buy Armor Coatings if most of the time no one can see your custom colored Spartan? I fear that either Halo Infinite’s MP will abandon the good old Red vs. Blue scheme OR 343 is planning another big game mode like Halo 5’s Warzone specifically planned to let people show off their Armor Coatings. That means that that game mode cannot have two teams of Spartans competing against each other – it could be either Battle Royale (a rumor which 343 repeatedly denied) or some sort of Humans x Banished mode (which could be an opportunity for monetizing even more customization options, if we could play as Elites and Brutes).

Either that, or no more Red vs. Blue, which would totally suck in my opinion.

I have no reason to believe it will be anything different that what the other games have done. You will still be able to customize armor and color, but when playing team modes the colors will be overridden to show consistent team colors. You will be able to see another players full customization in FFA modes or when viewing their profile directly, but otherwise it is just the armor that you will see.

I sure hope you’re right, but then again, they never tryed to SELL colors before.

I don’t see why it would differ from all the previous games.

Sure this is speculation I suppose, but I anticipate…
-In arena modes, colors are forced to red/ blue (/ green/ yellow for multi team)
-In FFA you get your armor coating

  • In firefight you get your armor coating
  • If there’s a mode where the teams are different species (something like Reach’s invasion), you get your armor coating.

I just can’t think of a reason this would change… even if you argue to push MX’s on players who stick to arena, there would still be things like weapon skins, announcers, emblems, stances, and the armor pieces themselves(if they’re separate from coatings) that Arena players would likely still spend money on.

I admittedly don’t know a whole lot about what the coatings are (as far as official information), my assumption is that it will be very similar to previous games where you get armor sets or pieces. I’m not sure the colors will be locked in with the “coating”, because, like you eluded to, this could deter people from purchasing since most the time you will be in team colors.

I was randomly thinking it might be like destiny cause iirc that game isnt red vs blue colors right? I cant remember cause its been ages since i played destiny pvp. Way back in destiny 1 days…

didnt they simply have a red or blue thick outline but other than that retained their custom clothes / colors?

I think they’re going to keep red vs blue for 4v4 and maybe big team but then use the coatings in some other larger mode like you said

Yea, but that outline looks like hot garbage swirling in a typhoon of poop launching out of a vomit catapult.

In case it isn’t clear, I really hope we don’t get glowing player outlines.

Most likely they will only affect your armor’s wear and tear/texture finish, and possibly the locations of ligher and darker shades of your team color (like Halo 4’s armor skins did for the lighter and darker shades of red/blue). But team colors will undoubtedly still take precedence over coating colors.

You also had the very visible health bar over the enemy’s head, and the level and gamertag over your teammates, which made it easier to tell them apart. It works well, but I don’t see Infinite implementing health bars like that.

idkkkkkk if microsoft or 343 REALLY want to lean hard into heavy cosmetic monetization, only having the ability to show off your coatings in a few modes while all the others force you to be red & blue wouldnt be optimal. All we can do is pray that they mean what they say when they wont rely on psychological tricks to monetize the games economy cause almost every game that is f2p and uses a cosmetic system does anything it can to make paying / flaunting the most desirable route.

I think a lot of people are overly optimistic about keeping RvB armour colours.
Coatings apply a monetary value to colours, it therefore needs to be an incentive to see in game. Why would anyone buy armour coatings if you can only see them in FFA or Co-Op game modes?

I’m not leaning either way here, it’s one of those things that we simply won’t know until we know. Just gotta remind everyone that we honestly don’t know.

I mean For Honor removed forced colours and had outlines added to inform you of your teammates, which can be toggled off if you find that you don’t need it i.e. players who can quickly read radar or visually see friendly name tags (which I am not one)

I don’t mind glowing player outlines as long as people can toggle it for those whose immersion dies with their inclusion. Similarly with the skins in MCC and how they can be toggled for those who don’t want to see them

I will like to stick with RvB but use my own coats for WZ and other game types.

Do we know that colors are monetized? Or are the coatings just another way of saying armor sets, and we still have full access to customize colors?

We know at the very least they will be separating colours into a shader system similar to Destiny.

This is what I feel lol. Destiny managed to make it work and 343 could do a much better job with halo’s art style to pull of a means of maybe even toggling? Maybe you can choose what you see. RvB colors or the new system? Just like how they would let you toggle skins on and off in mcc. It really all just comes down to how money grubbing they want to be with this system.

I never felt like armor colors mattered. IFF tags should be more than enough to tell who’s not on your team
