Widespread use of jackal shields?

Why do no other covenant forces employ the jackal sheilds? They can be wielded with one hand , and most grunts and elites only use one handed weapons. And it probably wouldn’t take to much r-n-d to make them bigger. On top of that, they could probably be wrist-mounted too. There is no real reason not to do it. And why hasn’t the UNSC tried to revers Engineer them? Is there any in-lore reason? Or is it just a bit of an oversight?

by one handed weapons I meant needlers, plasma rifles pistols and swords, three of which are the most common of all covie weapons

I don’t think it’s an oversight, but a gameplay decision. It’s not going to be very fun if every enemy has an extra shield to get past.

Good question. UNSC wise, in halo 4 you can use an armor ability called “headlight shield”. So I guess they did recreate it for the Spartans. I think maybe it would be cool if you can use a sword at the same time or any weapon like you said. I guess it’s like the active camo when they say that it wares out when you move fast because the alien technology is too advanced, but then halo ce active camo is like really good. So I guess it’s all buffed for pvp experience.

Yea, i agree, i was wondering if there was in in-lore reason

Probably just decided gameplay wise.

Hmm, not something I really ever thought about. Like others have said, it is probably just for gameplay. I don’t think every enemy should have those shields, but one thing I would like to see is some Elites wielding that unique energy shield from the old Halo CE trailer. Not all of them, but some high ranking Elites here and there (and the occasional sneaky Minor/Major) could use it.

i think that players should also be able to use them but they would not be able to use they’re own shields until they drop the shield

Most likely, it was decided through gameplay reasoning. I can make some guesses on why only jackals use them in-lore, though.

Elites already have a shield, so they might not care to have a handheld one as well.
Grunts (iirc) are the lowest of the low, so they might not consider getting all of them a shield worth the resources.
And then there’s the idea that the other units didn’t want one, but that’s not as interesting.

Now I want to wield jackal shields in forge.

pretty sure it states in one of the books that the shielding in the MK V MJOLNIR was reverse engineered from a recovered Jackal gauntlet and improved on. and yeah i can imagine they didn’t give grunts shields for gameplay, cant imaging a legendary run with a sheild wall of grunts would be much fun lol.

Like others have said, giving a handheld shield to every enemy would probably not be too fun gameplay wise. But there are also a lot of practical and lore reasons for this as well, which I can hopefully explain here.

The Covenant was and is a highly hierarchical culture, so for the longest time the highest rank or race within the Covenant was the Prophets, followed by the Elites with the Brutes slightly below them. Then Jackals were next and on the bottom of the pillar were the Grunts. There may be some other races that I left out here but in Halo games these are the ones most commonly seen. These races or ranks are basically kind of like military ranks in our modern day military. The higher up you are, the more access you have to better or more dangerous equipment. A private in today’s military probably wouldn’t be given access to call a missile strike for example, or to wield a new experimental gun. The same can be said for the Covenant. Elites don’t really need a handheld shield since they already have full body shields that are more effective at protecting them from more directions. Brutes never really had shields for some reason I can’t really explain. Grunts generally did not get any kind of shielding at all since they were generally seen as basically cannon fodder. Although within each of these races there is also a sub-ranking within, with some Elites being of higher class than others; the same going for the Brutes, Jackals, and Grunts.

TLDR: It all comes down to ranking and since jackals are a class above grunts they get a small shield while grunts don’t. Elites get their full body shields being the top of the pillar.

The real question is why Spartans aren’t allowed to use Jackal shields. In H2 this item was actually programmed for player use, but the ability for the player to pick it up was toggled off. Generalkidd made a pretty cool video showing this off here - Jackal Shield starts at 4:27.

That’s such a shame! It would have gone quite nicely with dual wielding…and it would be hilarious to dual wield the shield and the Energy Sword, or two shields at once…
