What are the covenant still together? Why are the elites fighting the humans again? Why are elites not playable?

It would make sense to fight along side the elites like in halo 3 but not make them underpowered like in halo 3. I hope 343i tells why we are against them again in halo 4

Maybe they’re like WWII Japanese soldiers who just don’t know the war is over and they can’t off the planet because of the ancient evil or whatever it is that seems to be sucking ships up.
I have not read glasslands yet but the most logical assumptions i can make are either:
A) There was a civil war in the covenant, one side still believes the prophets ways and want to kill master Chief
B) It is a pirate faction of the covenant which could be why they look a lot different to the covies in halo 3 and reach.
C) A group of covies got stuck in the shield world/Dyson sphere and have no idea of what has gone on outside.
Im more likely thinking its A though.
I completely agree and feel the same way but, we have to live with it.

i havnt read the books would i need to read them to get whats properly going on in halo 4, will they be basing the rest of the games of the books?

Believe me, it would make much more sense.
The war is over. But you cant expect all the covenant to be friendly or even neutral.
Just because the prophets are dead doesnt mean that the covenant stopped believing their religion.
Remember last year when that one guy told the world that the rapture was going to happen? Out of the billions of people on earth, only a handful believed. Now imagine the same scenario for arbiter when he told the elites they were wrong about the halos
I would’ve loved to think that I could fight as the elites in my own conquest as a sort of “spartan ops” or something but since the prophets died then who will lead the newly risen covenant.
