So, we could have already been playing the game, and you all said that an enemy that we will see in the game looks bad, although in gameplay we would most likely shoot one in the head and walk on. So, why did you all care so much? Some people are comparing it to Cyperpunk, but what I have heard is that the graphics drop every once in a while. If that is true, halo still had sustained graphics throughout the whole gameplay presentation. We could have already been playing it, and I agree it wasn’t perfect, but not everything will be. It does tick me off a lot, but honestly I just want to hear some opinions on the matter.

Agree with what you’re saying, but I don’t believe the issue is that simple. There was a perfect storm of the graphics/gameplay backlash, Joe Staten coming on board, other major 343 developers leaving, etc that tells me there were more problems behind the scenes then what we’ve been told.

Yeah that makes sense, but that was also a big factor.
I believe that part of the backlash is because Microsoft is marketing the hell out of Xbox Series X being the “most powerful console ever made”, and yet its flagship title looked like a late Xbox 360 videogame running on 4K through back-compat… Until now it has been hard to justify a $499 purchase, so Halo Infinite better knock my socks off next time I see it.
The difference here is that the halo infinite demo was in a work in progress state, while cyberpunk is a fully released game.
Not entirely sure why people are complaining about the demo when it was effectively a prototype game that didn’t even have animations added yet though…

I believe the game was going to be delayed regardless of wether or not it was received well during the July showcase. The decision to delay the game is based on a lot more than just fan reaction. The poor reception is most likely a symptom of a larger issue with the development of infinite.

I think the demo was a PR screw up. The whole point of showing gameplay on a digital event that was suppose to be about marketing a highly anticipated game on a next generation console is to build hype by showing the product in a good light.
I give props for 343 for not doing what game companies generally do in those situations, which is to show us fake trailers that don’t look anything like the real game. Nonetheless, work-in-progress or not, Halo Infinite still wasn’t in a state to be shown to the public, and the reaction to the gameplay shows exactely that.

Yeah, thats stupid. I would have taken the demo tbh

Well, they kinda had 3 options. 1. create a fake trailer that doesn’t actually show the real game. 2. show the unfinished game. 3. continue their 5-year streak of telling us absolutely nothing.
1 and 3 would have meant that we might have gotten a halo 4-5 all over again, with absolutely no community feedback as to what they should change. But still, complaining about face animations when they weren’t implemented yet is just whiny. People should at least complain about things like them getting rid of the plasma rifle instead.

That’s because you’re a hardcore fan, but a game with so many lod issues, no color gradients, no facial animations, no environmental interaction, underwhelming AI, unfinished shaders… Pfff! The list goes on man! Halo Infinite wasn’t ready and it shouldn’t have been shown to the public. Not at that stage!
MS just should have said that they’re sorry, but they can’t deliver a quality game under the Covid situation. Simple as that!
Not to mention they knew. Spencer himself said SX wouldn’t wait for any game, Halo included. That’s telling! They knew they couldn’t make it in time, but they still showcased an unfinished product filled with problems. I guess they buckled under the pressure of the partners, MS went crazy with the advertisement and exclusive in-game content after all.
You, a fan, maybe would have loved it anyway, but the media and the general consumer wouldn’t have shared your opinion. It would have been a banquet if something, with Chief’s corpse as the main dish mind you!

Everyday Joe doesn’t know facial animation aren’t implemented yet. They see a trailer, notice something is out of place and point it out. You can’t put that on the consumer!
The terrain pop in is what got me… reminded me of driving games during PS2/OGX days. Rest of it looked like a fun time… minus the Craig brute faces. Halo 3 Brutes looked much better on facial detail from 2005 hardware. To me, the trailer showed a ton of promise…but needed considerable fine tuning. I remember thinking then that they had a lot of work to do bc companies work hard to get demos looking good. No telling how actual game throughout looked.
It was delayed because it wasn’t ready. Even if you would have played it that doesn’t mean the rest of us would. I’m personally pretty tired of companies releasing games in a unfinished state.
If we want Halo to reclaim the crown of the multiplayer shooters – or at least to be a part of the conversation again – Halo Infinite needs to knock it out of the park. Get high scores in early reviews and be remembered in the Game of the Year lists. In order to manage that, the game doesn’t need to have the best graphics ever, but at least it needs to be very well polished in the technical level. And release with a ton of content, in opposition to Halo 5 that was missing a lot of multiplayer modes on release. It needs to have enough maps and release with the best Forge suit ever in day one (seriously, if Halo Infinite has any chance to be a hit with twitch streamers and youtubers, I believe Forge will be a big part of it).
There is only one chance to make a first impression, and Halo has to get it right, otherwise only hardcore fans will be talking about it a couple months later. If 343i needs to get another year to deliver it, that’s fine, albeit I’m dying to play this game already.
Funny thing is, the issues that fans brought up were things 343 were already aware of and working on
Very few people would have been happy playing the game in the unfinished state it was in. Dont lie, it looked like many more things besides facial animations needed changing. The game would have flopped if 343 didn’t do the right thing and delayed it.
Microsoft wouldn’t allow Halo Infinite to miss the launch of the Xbox Series X|S by a full year over memes about a Brute’s face. If you legitimately feel that way after the mountains of proof to the contrary, I don’t know what to tell you. With people in important roles leaving left and right, old big names being brought on to salvage the project, and a year-long delay, the game probably barely functions (while we don’t know the severity of it, we do know from Joseph Staten that the game is buggy).
We aren’t ungrateful. You’re just impatient and looking for excuses.
I think it’s best that it’s releasing next year. My friends who never gave a second thought of Halo watched the trailers and immediately bought MCC. It’s giving people time to immerse themselves into Halo, giving time to polish graphics and gameplay, and marketing can now be actually implemented.
I don’t believe in the Halo community being “ungrateful” towards 343 as a possibility. 343 inherited not just the intellectual property of Halo but the entire franchise. 10 previous years of lore and examples of how a Halo game generally plays. We’re not beholden to them. It’s the other way around. Without consumers an entity like 343 can’t exist. Our money is not automatically theirs because we consider ourselves fans. They have to earn it. Halo is, at the end of the day, a product and we as consumers have every right to be upset when the product doesn’t meet our standards. Especially when we KNOW 343 might not be giving us their best product.
I too feel pangs of wanting when I think about Halo Infinite and what it could be. I sometimes think, “But we could have it right now.” Then I think a little harder and I believe that giving it another year to bake is a good idea. More time for campaign to be ironed out and gussied up and for me more time for multiplayer to be fleshed out. Think of MCC being like one big beta test for cross-platform and networking. Every time they fix something that’s wrong on the MCC we hopefully shouldn’t see a similar issue on Infinite when it launches.
In this man’s most humble of opinions, I think it’s overall going to pay dividends when it launches. Comparing it to Cyberpunk, that game’s disastrous launch on previous generation consoles and low-end PCs makes 343’s decision look smart. On the other hand, it puts even more pressure on them to deliver a spectacular and near-flawless game.
It’s not ungrateful to criticize something, those are two entirely different concepts. If you think Infinite was delayed due to a single mesh and some meh textures on said mesh you’re sorely mistaken. For a delay to occur there would be something more sizeable that would be the cause, for example broken physics, AI not functioning properly, etc. We should be happy it’s delayed and not being rushed out the door as a hot mess. The delay is a good thing.
