The way I deal with all the killing?
I see a pile of dead Spartans, it’s just a slumber party.
No one actually dies, they’re just sleeping.
Same way I deal with seeing roadkill.
“Oh, that deer on the side of the road is just napping”.
I dont think the name change has social undertones.
They want to just bring the name up to date
What is the origin of the swat name?
First in halo 2 as a custom game?
lol… 343 is constantly making unnecessary tweaks to their game precisely because of social undertones
They cant rename Zombies, right?
Nazis and zombies dont have rights.
Well maybe nazis have SOME rights.
But they cant change Zombies. That’s safe.
I hear swat, I think maybe I’m playing rainbow 6 or cod?
No…I’m a futuristic alien killing cyborg.
The name swat never fit, partly due to it being from an older generations mindset.
Tactical Slayer screams John Wick
343 making something more violent
A gametype name change
They can do whatever they want. It’s their game. But they have made a lot of small changes in the last few years that are obviously motivated by social causes. I’m not arguing that’s good or bad, but it is what they have done.
Honest reason that they haven’t come out and publicly stated?
Because they probably wanted to distance the mode from police - specifically, SWAT, which exists purely for paramilitary operations with very little to zero legal recourse if anything goes wrong or is unjust. After the protests of both 2015 and 2020, there’s just no good reason to keep it linked to such a group. Just as well, keeping the old name, SWAT, would be seen as an insensitive move to those who lost their lives or were horribly injured exercising their rights both of those years,
Frankly, as a protestor during 2020 and a Social Justice Advocate and general activist, I strongly appreciate 343i’s move to distance this mode I actually quite enjoy from such paramilitary organizations.
Just as well, “SWATing” people has become a very real problem - because, again, due to the way law enforcement handles “Internal Investigations” - law enforcement agents who break the law are typically acquitted as a result, while SWATing victims often have to shoulder any medical bills or property damage alone.
That sounds too much like Unibombers
So no, I believe this is the most politically correct, least triggering, and most family friendly terminology they could use.
are there even any far left areas of the united states? not a single state has universal health care or a rehabilitation-based penal system.
As a Swat player since Halo 3, I understand where they are coming from with the name change, but I think it is not the best decision to change the name of an iconic gametype just because of recent events.
The suicide name change, ok. I get that and can support it. But the Swat name change… I think was a bad decision. No one is going to refer to it as Tactical Slayer realistically.
I know I’m going to continue calling it Swat until the end of time.
Real Halo Waypoint 2021 moment here
Listen, if you’re gonna’ be like that don’t even bother @ing me.
i don’t think anyone’s acting tough mate, it’s pretty damn stupid.
??? How about virtually every major metropolitan city in the country?
San Francisco
Portland
Los Angeles
Washington DC
Chicago
Manhattan
Philadelphia
Seattle, WAS (cough cough a day’s trip from 343 HQ cough cough cough)
I’d also like to point out that the “Streets” map includes a New Mombasa police station. Honestly shocked that managed to make it through.
I’d still wager that SWAT got it’s name changed because they’re terrified of offending people. Just like they’re terrified of having the option to choose a Male or Female Spartan in multiplayer. I guess the philosophy is go “forward” with such blind fervor that you don’t see the giant, gaping ditch right in front of you.
Whoa-ho take us to TASK Goat!
I dig it.

Well In a sense SWAT stands for Special weapons and Tactics, granted their tactics and weapons were just basic issue stuff and tactics infantry soldiers.
A lot of speculation on this thread it seems.
My guess is that the main reason is simply that Swat as a name for a slayer gametype doesn’t actually make much sense as it doesn’t really describe the gametype well. It sounds like a gametype a random fan came up with for custom games (which, as I recall, is how Swat actually originally started long ago).
Add to that the fact that multiplayer is now F2P, so there are a lot of new players to whom the name Swat doesn’t mean anything when talking about gametypes. To us long-time fans the meaning is obvious, but from a new player’s pov Tactical slayer sounds much more rational.
That’s my theory, but I personally couldn’t care less whether the gametype is called Swat or Tactical slayer. I’m gonna still keep calling it Swat, though, when I’m playing with friends that I’ve played Halo a long time with lol.
I just don’t like renaming community-born game modes. We the community invented Infection, SWAT, Grifball (yes RoosterTeeth is part of the community), etc. Changing the name SWAT, even if it makes slightly more sense to call it Tactical Slayer, just feels a bit wrong. Halo has never needed to be so formal. That’s what the community called it, so leave it alone. It would be like renaming “infection” because of the (ridiculously overblown) “pandemic”. You just don’t do it. It’s a video game.
Are you referring to yourself as the clown? That’s the only logical explanation because I know you aren’t talking about me. Resolved XD
I only said that was my theory of why it was changed. Do I think it needed to change? No. But I don’t really care much either.
