Why was Chief sidelined?

I’m not going to give away spoilers, but I have to talk about this. Chief and Blue Team are only in 3 missions, and Chief is sidelined, while Locke is front and center. I’ve got to wonder, why did they do this? After the end of Halo 4, Chief was beginning to rediscover his Humanity, and that continued at the end on TN72H. Yet, he’s put to the sidelines for this new character who takes up the majority of screen-time. From what we do see of Chief in the game, his arc does seem to be continuing, but it’s so rarely shown. I don’t get why when they said in this saga they wanted to bring Chief’s humanity into the games, yet he’s barely in this game. why do you think Chief was sidelined to make room for Locke when we should’ve gotten more tie with him?

Because John had 4 games dedicated to him.

Well by having this third party (Locke) it allowed for more mystery. Its obvious that chief is till going to be the main character, locke will still be part of it (dont know how), by not having him as a huge part it made his moments possess more impact. Just an idea why, I was also curious but buy the end of it, I thought it worked out well

Because it’d be an awkward hunt if you did 50/50.

The entire game is focused about finding chief and Cortana, while sidelined in terms of control, they’re sort of the focus of the story. Even villain cortana has Chief as her main rival, not locke.

The story is all about Chief!!.. just because you don’t play as him doesn’t make this “sidelining” him, it’s not like Locke and Cheif play differently to the player

I find lock borring really. Wouldnt mind pkaying as him if he was more intresting

because like hacks, 343 tried to pull a halo 2 on us.

only, the arbiter was a likeable, interesting character and he offered a new perspective that was wildly different from Master Chief’s. AND HE SHARED THE GAME EVENLY.

Locke is boring, unlikeable, boring, dull, boring, and boring. Oh, and he’s pretty irrelevant to everything going on until MC laughably has to be saved at the very end. Until then, he’s just chasing MC’s shadow and left in the dark, which doesn’t even work because the player ISN’T as uninformed as he is due to the fact that we’ve gotten to play as MC. He plays just like MC and gives us no new perspective at all. Cortana’s taunts during the final level are pretty accurate. They’re just stand-in spartans. We don’t care about them and trying to force them is only going to make us resist them more.

Do you think the next game it will probably be reversed, with Chief having the majority of screen-time, while Locke gets a few missions?

I hope the next game only has Chief, the whole squad thing made it feel like a spin off.

I’m not necessarily going to say that I like the fact that Chief has been sidelined, but I kind of understand 343’s intention.

I haven’t beaten the campaign yet, have about 2-3 missions left, but so far, when you think about it, the campaign is still Chief-centric. Locke and Fireteam Osiris are just investigators who’s job is based entirely around John and his actions. Locke is the screen while John is the movie.

Also, this actually gives us a much needed break from playing as the master chief without dwindling his importance. I can’t help but get the feeling that if this was a story told only from John’s perspective, or for the majority of it, a lot of fans will begin to get burned out with another campaign of him blowing stuff up and being cool as hell.

Idk, limiting the Chief’s missions feels fresh because the story is still so much about him and dealing with his humanity.

I don’t like that the chief was sidelined.

I also was under the impression that there would be an actual mystery, not that after the first few missions you discover Cortana talks to MC and he just takes off for that. I thought MC was going to uncover some big corrupt ONI secret or something and they were sending Locke after him to stop him, I dunno.^ after that point, there is nothing “mysterious” that couldn’t have been discovered while playing as Chief and Blue Team for pretty much the rest of the game!

I am so baffled by this decision. The whole “Hunt for the Truth” thing and “the biggest hunt in gaming hostory” is not the vibe I got when playing through the campaign at all.

Because they don’t want all the games to be about him. Essentially they are trying to make him one of the characters in the universe. The most liked and respected…ish, but only one of them. Besides, let us have fun with the new guys.

Sidelined he was not. the entire story was just about finding chief and cortana. Just because you don’t play as him as often doesn’t mean he suddenly becomes a secondary character. There is more to story telling then that. Chief was still important in halo 5 and he still will be in halo 6 considering how everything is lined up. I wouldn’t worry about chief going away till after 6.

That’d be more forgivable had they not dragged in Blue Team and essentially gave them nothing to do.

I don’t get what you are saying. they were there and supported the chief the entire time. what were you expecting?

He’s getting to old for this ****. Give him a break
