Halo 2 was undoubtedly one of the best multiplayer games of all time. It also secured the ‘Halo’ throne for Xbox, until 2007 (GoW is a TPS, people.), when CoD 4 came out, and took the ‘Halo’ throne.
When CoD : Black Ops came out, alot of people were disappointed. While it beat Halo Reach for sales, it was really the end of the CoD reign. After a few months, the novelty wore out and it was forgotten. Then, next year, when Activision had a chance to get CoD back, the appalling Modern Warfare 3 came out. Alot of hardcore CoD fans went back to their previous games, or other franchises. Battlefield 3 won the battle between the two games that year. I think Call of Duty has a few years at most before it dies out, and it’s throne will be up for grabs.
The new Battlefield game won’t be coming out for a while, so the only other (unless another game comes out) game which will be able to take the ‘throne’ back will be our beloved Halo.
Halo 4 is looking, to me, to be dancing the fine line between keeping old fans and gaining new ones. Therefore, I feel that by Halo 5, Halo will be the ‘top’ Xbox game.
What do you mean by winning? To me they win if more people play them. Even though I think certain games are better than COD they don’t win by through sales or by their ranking on the Xbox Live Top 20. Battlefield in this case did not win because not as many people play it and it didn’t beat COD in sales. Now I personally think Battlefield 3 is the better of the two games but technically it didn’t win. MW3 pales in comparison to previous games of the series yet they are still populated by more people regardless. Both take the top 2 seats on the charts.
I’m hoping it does retake the throne, but not by making it a casualfest (and no, Halo 4 is NOT going to be a casualfest). If you think about it, maybe the only reason Halo was ever the “king” of shooters is because it was one of the only online console FPS’s at the time.
What I’m saying is, maybe if CoD existed back then, Halo 2 might not have been so popular. Halo 2/3 were really the only good options in their time.
