What will it change in the game other than people telling other people they are better than them? That is the only answer I can think of other than people quitting right before the start of a game because they do not like the ranks they see, leading to 643789267892 more people complaining about J.I.P.
-you will actually get matched up with people in your same skill bracket which absolutely does not happen right now
-people will actually try and win the match as a team
-because people will win they will communicate which makes the game more fun for everyone, i have heard about 10 people use their mic’s since this game came out because there is no actual reason to win a game, you cant even see who you are playing with the terrible UI 343 gave us

you must not have played halo 2 or 3. there is no debate, visible ranking works and is good for the game, it has already been proven. reach and halo 4 have proven that no rank is bad for the game, the population for both games is proof enough

I never said those were bad… in fact, they seem like good reasons.
I’m glad to know you took Grade 10 Civics and that you have a basic understanding of what communism is, but it really has NOTHING to do with this thread.
There are some people who play just to play and mess around and there are some people who like to play competitively because, to them, that is how they have fun. I like to play competitively sometimes and it would be nice to see a visual representation of that in game. It adds excitement.
I gotta say i don’t understand the fuss about it being visible in game or not just to prove your bragging rights of having a 50 or whatever. The most important thing IMO is just having a ranking system that works so you can get matched against players of similar skill this should keep the game exciting because the games will be close and you will actually be able to improve your game.
I think of myself as a reasonably good player and atm i find myself getting worse at the game i would but this is due to the fact i am playing lesser players, so i become too relaxed and have no real reason to up my game the majority of the time it’s a bad habit and makes you slack.

I am competitive, and get excited with the game. I do not need a CSR to feel that way.
Also, the dichotomy between social and competitive players is artificial.
Like I said, many of these competitive types have worst stats that me, a mediocre player by all accounts.
Please don’t use the population numbers as an indicator of this game’s popularity in comparison to the others - the market for video games and specifically FPS has grown dramatically leading to more choices for that same pool of people.
CSR does not bring people together, or make them try harder. It is a cosmetic feature that allows those of us who wish to to take pride in our accomplishments. To my knowledge it will not be linked to Trueskill so the oddities of matchmaking will continue. People (like me) will still not use their mics because the minute you say ANYTHING someone responds with cursing, trolling, or racial epithets (spellcheck?).
The way Halo used to be has changed not because of developers, or technology, or lack of skill, or MLG, or whatever . . . it’s changed because people who play have changed. While I welcome the CSR changes, I don’t see them doing much of anything to change the prevailing attitude of these forums.

Yep,
There will simply be another issue to criticize, coupled with a yearning for the old games that perhaps was not as great as their memories would lead them to believe.

This is false I’ve been playing competitive online Halo since Halo 2 and rank did not stop -Yoinks!- of lower ranks taking the sniper even if you asked politely or they would betray you for it even if they sucked with it did still happen rank or not.
The real answer is people have to feel secure about if their digital junk is bigger than their opponent.
The other reason is that for some reason a number dictates “skill”. Which is utter horse crap. Because a complete new person could come in and be better than someone who has been playing for more than a month. And when this happens the person with the lower number id dubbed a cheater and reported as such just because the guy with the bigger number got his -Yoink- kicked.

Yep, the common refrain is “You must not have been playing Halo long…”
I played it the first day for all the titles including Halo Wars. What you say is accurate. CSR does none of the things that people are selling.

If you’re counting me and a buddy drunk on weekends messing around with our teammates that care about their rank as being good for the game then yes.
Honestly, as with anything, people generally like to show off what they’ve achieved. Attaining a number beside your name is no different than attaining the green visor, or commendations on your service record, or unlocking a new piece of armor that someone has etc etc.
I personally like to have that number beside my name, it drives me to play better and attain a higher goal. Its a really big motivating factor to keep me going. I honestly have so much fun trying to get the highest level I can and show off what Ive achieved.
