This is just my opinion. When I hear about Halo Online being Russian only and FTP PTW, Im not all that frustrated. I dont want to play FTP games, especially FPS. I thinj what frustrates most Halo Players competitive and casual audiences alike is that it was the Halo 3 we always wanted. Halo 3 re made maps with Halo 4 graphics. Halo 4 was an interesting experiment but Halo 5 showed me they weren’t interested in going back to the arena formula. The only hope we had left for “old” Halo was the MCC and of course it was a launch disaster. Halo 5 played better than the MCC 5 months after launch. I think perhaps Halo players in general are upset because not only is this game getting what we wanted for 7 years but skill ranks off launch, Halo 3 re made maps on PC and its Russian only. I just don’t understand the buissness practice, I wish someone who worked there could explain to me why they did what they did. Thank you Sik Frosty out.
Skimming through this topic, it’s hard to believe that many current Halo fans, competitive or casual, want what Halo: Online is.
While many can see the H3 engine running on a top end PC, many also notice that there are “perks,” loadouts, attribute modifying armour and weapon add-ons and sprint. They have H3 maps with sprint…
All under a Free-2-Play model.
… Not very “arena” like.
But then again, perhaps many do want something to what Halo: Online offers but have been pushed away by the persistent “Keep it Old Skool” rhetoric. I know I am up in the air on it. As many have noted, there’s good and there’s bad F2P. As I don’t believe Halo is restricted to symmetrical-only combat, I cannot outright condemn Halo: Online.
Either-or, Halo: Online is certainly not what we’ve seen many forums scream for. Quite the opposite.

Again just treading very lightly. It isn’t very arena like. But the foundation to which I felt a ton of people at least that I know from te competitive/mlg scene, feel that Halo 3 basically on pc with ranks off the bat. Compared to the MCC, Halo 3 remade that is unplayable with no skill rank. Basically it was the foundation we always wanted but werent allowed to have. I personally will be trying it, but I already sold my Xbox one because of the direction the series is going. A series I myself put into 30,000 games and 5 mlg events. As a gamer I am used to change, aka games like dk64, jak and daxter being nonexistant today. A bit offtopic, but just my opinion sir. I think the competitive community isnt interested in the gimmicks. But more or less hey this was the game foundation we wanted since Halo Reach. We were told it wasnt going to happen but then they make it for Russia only and give it a ftp model. I just wish they tried it just to see how the population stats would have differed compared to the Halo 4 drip to 10,000 after a year of launch. We were always told our sub community was a small %, and yet no Halo game since Halo 3 has kept a population of over 100,000 year after launch. The more news we hear like we hired people who hated Halo, and stuff like this the more people move on. Its just really sad, at one time the Halo comunity was 500,000 strong casual and competitive getting along great. I may be a bit extreme in my opinion on the matter, but generally 343is decision to make Halo 3 the foundation and include ranks was the biggest slap in the face to EU and NA Halo 3 players.
Simply put, the Free-To-Play model for shooters typically suits class-based shooters, where the various weaponry & gear that diversifies the class can be bought or unlocked. Team Fortress 2 & PlanetSide 2 are certainly good examples I know of where this is done pretty fairly (Although PlanetSide 2 has a somewhat arguably high pricing on most of it’s weaponry).
Halo is not a class-based shooter. And no matter how much I loved Loadouts for Custom Games & Co-op, it just wasn’t an ideal addition to the multiplayer, Halo 4 especially. It just doesn’t really work well in an arena-shooter environment where all players typically start evenly & tip the battle in their favour through map familiarity & weapon pickups.
Now not only does Halo: Online offer the prospect of increasing the problems of player-customised loadouts in an arena-shooter environment, but now there’s money involved in acquiring them. So this really makes me ask myself; How on Earth is this going to be balanced not only gameplay wise (Are the weapon attachments going to provide an element of drawback along with improvement to push toward certain strategies?), but how on Earth are they going to ensure that the paying player doesn’t have an unquestionable advantage over a new or free player?
Obviously, this game is aimed at a market which as a whole probably finds standard retail games harder to afford & possibly has more notable amounts of piracy (I’m not going to pretend I’m very aware of game pricing & video game economics in Russia), but that doesn’t make me any less concerned that those playing it are going to be given a fair experience. And of course, if this does infact receive a Europe & North America release, we’ve seen enough Free-To-Play games tied to popular franchises give the business model or the games released with it a very bad reputation from F.E.A.R: Online to Dungeon Keeper 2, so the teams behind Halo: Online need to ensure they provide a business model that we can stomach.
When all is said & done at the end of the day, what I want as a PC gamer & someone with a long history of enjoying Halo, is to see core titles of the past & present make their way onto PC at some point (Whether the present ones arrive on PC much later after their console counter-parts, I’m not fussed as I’d prefer a good PC port over a prompt one). A Free-To-Play console port with poor mouse control is not on that list.
Maybe Halo: Online won’t be as bad as we fear. Just maybe. But an online multiplayer-only console port with a Free-To-Play business model attached is not what I’d call the way to go, nor can they announce this product without detailing the business model in full & have me believe this can be a good thing.
To me, the problem is twofold.
First, this is not the game the Halo PC community has been asking for. We’ve been asking for a full Halo 3/MCC port with advanced map editing and modding support, not a free-to-play shooter built on an old engine with recycled assets from various games. Lately we’ve also been asking for full Windows 10 Xbox support with things like crossplay and Live integration.
Second, this game, now that it’s here, is only officially available to a tiny demographic of gamers. The vast majority of the Halo community has been shut out by this title, which even lacks many features no modern Halo game should be without such as campaign, coop or even proper Xbox Live support.
I’d really like to know what the Microsoft executives who brainstormed this project were smoking. It must have been good stuff. I want some.

Yea, It’s been a tough few years for the Halo community.
The only thing that I think is messed up is that a lot of people have been begging 343 and MS to bring a new Halo fps or port the MCC to PC for a long time now, but they put their resources into this “F2P” game(not to mention shut out the majority of the Halo Community which others have mentioned above).
I’m also not thrilled with MS’s idea that streaming XB1 games to our high end PCs and forcing us to use a controller instead of our M/KB setup is somehow what any PC gamer’s would want or have been asking for.
I’d also like to note, that the PC Halo Community has been asking for ODST, H3, Reach, H1 Anniversary, MCC and yes, even H4 and Halo Wars- and we’ve been given half hearted excuses for why PC gamers cant play with their toys.

In all honesty that was a good move so keyboard users don’t dominate controller users.

Then why bother investing in technology and software to stream it to PC? Why wouldn’t someone just play their XBOX?
People that choose to use controllers on PC shooters assume that risk of being dominated by m/kb users.
Seems like they could find a way to matchmake based on inputs, and restrict switching from M/KB to Controller @ the main menu. Crossplay with “Shadowrun” mp suffered because it didn’t matchmake based on inputs, and it wasn’t that great anyways.

But halo is a console game, so why should I have to sorry about a keyboard guy when I have a controller?

Nobody is asking you to be “sorry” about a “keyboard guy”.
We’re also talking about Halo on PC and why there is a Halo Online F2P game restricted to Russia only(despite Halo, XBOX, and MS are American products and companies, and being supported by a global community of Halo players) rather than what the PC Halo community has been asking for and given lame excuses as to why it’s not possible or not under any consideration, not Halo on console.
PC gamers USE M/KB and have the OPTION- to use a controller or an alternative input device, that’s how it works, just like how Console gamers use controllers, and in rare cases have the option to use another input device. It’s best to use native inputs for the device you’re using is what I’m saying.
If you watch gameplay, you normally get the base weapons and buy the modified ones. It doesn’t look that bad. What makes me mad is that the fan base is in America and we have a Halo game in Russia. The only justification is if they add a Potato Plasma Cannon. Why not just make the game in America and TRANSLATE it to Russian. Now the Ruskies can play too.
