Alright I’m going to write a pretty long paragraph so if you don’t want to read it, here is a summary of the post in one sentence:
Split screen should be added in Halo 6, because it made Halo unique for casuals.
Basically, among the sea of games available for players these days, Halo was among the only last AAA games to have split screen. Between the split screen, shields that allow to slower reaction times than rival games such as COD, and cool sci-fi effects it was the ideal game for causal players who just wanted to play a game with their friends/family. Now, since split screen was removed from Halo 5, these players have either switched to a different game, are playing Halo reach or MCC, or just quit playing video games. This is why Halo 5 seems so “competitive” compared to previous Halos, and it doesn’t have as many players as many other games; it’s because most of the casual playerbase stopped playing because split screen was the entire reason why they played Halo.
However, this still doesn’t solve the original problem if why split screen was removed: Consistant 60 fps. Here are some solutions to that problem that could be done for this though:
- (Personal favorite) Uglier graphics. Graphics take up a big chunk of a computer’s processing power. Right now the xbox one can handle rendering Halo 5’s graphics for 1 player, but when it tries to do that for 2+ players, the fps starts to drop. However, if the graphics were less pretty, the xbox one could handle rendering 4 player’s environments. IMO I would not mind going back to Halo 4 graphics if it meant improved gameplay and split screen. I know that Halo 5 is supposed to show off the new console’s graphical abilities, but I don’t buy games to look at pretty pictures; I buy games to play them.
- Expand Halo 6’s budget and development time. This could allow for the development team to iron out any bugs that would be causing fps drops, so then the fps could stay consistant on split screen. This still doesn’t improve the xbox one’s hardware capabilities, so this might not work.
- Release Halo 6 after a new xbox one comes out. This new xbox hasn’t been confirmed but I think its pretty likely that a new xbox will come out with better hardware since games are already hitting the limits of the current xbox one. Halo 6 could offer split screen on the new consoles, but not offer it on the old ones. The only problem with this is that casual players aren’t going to be enthusiastic about buying a new console just so they can play split screen, so unless Microsoft offers a trade-in option idk if this will attract casual players back.
- Go back to 30 fps. This is the fastest solution and has a high chance of having a consistant fps for split screen, but I like having 60 fps and would rather have 60 fps than good graphics.
- Add split screen as a “dlc.” 343i could actually have splitscreen on launch, but not make it available until they ironed out any bugs with fps. This only really offers 343i more time to develop split screen and maybe create more hype and replayability for the game after the game gets old.
Important things to Note for split screen:
-Add the whole experience. Don’t just make split screen only available for offline or campaign. Make it online MP as well otherwise casual players aren’t going to be interested in playing it.
-Make it 4-player split screen, not just 2. There is nothing worse than having to pick your favorite friend out of your group to play with. Not only do you have mad friends, you can’t enjoy the full experience split screen has to offer.
there is a huge splitcreen thread. I think splitsreen is totally necessary though. I have started getting frame rate drops so the excuse of that breaking the game is completely untrue. I never had an issue with 60, and the graphics had to be sacrificed for that in this game. I want 30fps for split screen and more stable graphics.
Spit screen needs to come back. It was fun and a great well to socialize with friends. It also got a lot of my friends to either buy Halo or Xboxs or both. Only way this could happen is if there’s a graphic sacrifice in Halo 6. You can thank Don Mattrick for that one. Worst Xbox head ever.
Cause casuals were too cheap to buy to Xboxes… hahaha just kidding… H5 was built for competitive play. Yeah I guess it sucks they had to sacrifice split screen for it but they are probably regretting that decision.
Split screen is essential. I grew up from getting a Xbox on release and Halo CE. As most kids have siblings and dont want to sit and watch another person play. Instead siblings get a special experience growing up playing it together. They are now able to sponge us for a lifetime with halo games. This is my reasoning for saying it should be in. Catering just to adults or teens you need to look outstanding to draw them in.
Being a adult now with kids of my own i dont care if it is in or not. But if they want halo to stick around they should put it back in.
sacrifice graphics for splitscreen, because no one is able to point out the little details in a very small screen, so whats the point of having awesome graphics. LEAVE THAT TO PC, lol
I bought this game to play split screen with my wife, only to find out it doesn’t have it. My wife refuses to play now because of this. Every other we played together. A huge disappointment.

I hate being contained to one thread about splitscreen though. I see the reason why but it is that hard to follow, read, and plagued with trolls and people believing it shouldn’t be in the game.
For me it is the one feature that since we don’t have it, it makes the game feel empty. Not to mention most my friends boycotted the game simply since they couldn’t play with family anymore. If they brought back splitscreen it would make Halo 5 the game it should have been at launch.

LMAO. Its all on Don Mattrick’s terrible “grand” vision of the Xbox that caused it.
we are months into halo and im shocked you guys are still making a big deal about this. they already realized the mistake and are hoping to put it into H6.

Sorry for the late reply.
Anyway they said that split screen was coming back in “some shape or form” I’m a bit worried that this means that they are only going to have it offline/campaign mode, which is kinda cheap since it means you don’t get the full experience. This is why I hope that 343i realises that they need to keep online split screen and sacrifice other things in the game, not split screen.

they have been doing a good job with everything else right now, but you also have to go by the fact that the Xbox One is not strong enough to handle multi screen play for a game of that class. if anything, we will have to wait for them to create another console or deal with a dumb down version of it, and that includes just campaign or offline modes… i would still have the same graphics and game over multi screen. i have multiple X1’s so im not complaining anymore on the splits, but we just have to move on at some point. just beating a dead horse…

the game should’ve run on a different engine instead the same engine from halo 4.
Um first off I agree with this no spiltscreen was a disappointment. And a paragraph is 3-5 sentences.
I don’t usually like saying HALO should be like Call of Duty…but in this case, they should:
Black Ops 3 is 900-1080p 60fps…and while in splitscreenm it’s 720p 30fps
HALO’s done it well in the past…why is 343 making so much excuses about it?

if the 360 could do it…then a 4x more powerful console could do it…so it’s one of 2 things:
- 343 is lazy
- 343 desperately needs a new engine
