I was hopeful that the incorporation of a social playlist would give some of us lower skilled players a much needed respite from the sweaty competitive try hard fest that is all of Halo 5. Sadly, as with every other game before, it has not accomplished that goal. All it has done is create a laid back experience for the top players and made the rest of us nothing but cannon fodder. Social match after social match I’ve been matched against teams of high diamond rank or above. I can’t try to have a good time or try something different because I take two steps from spawn and die. Here are some things that need to be incorporated to make this truely ‘Social’ for EVERYONE:
1 - Behind the scenes matchmaking: Getting pub stomped by the elite isn’t exactly my idea of a good time. I’m gold to plat ranked for a reason. I can’t really have that laid back competitive respite facing players looking to beat up on me because they think it’s fun for them.
2 - Wins and losses don’t count: If this is a social ‘scrimmage’ then wins and loses shouldn’t count towards a players record. This would slow down the stat geeks trying to pad their win loss stats. By extension you shouldn’t be able to earn your arena win pack in this list either.
3 - Social list shouldn’t count KDA: Really an extension of number two.
4 - You shouldn’t get banned for leaving a ‘Social’ match: I get the need to ban quitters in ranked playlists where wins and loses and need of full teams matters. But in a list for fun, we should be able to leave if we aren’t having fun. Plus the list has join in progress so does it really matter? Especially if wins and loses don’t count?
I doubt that 343 will make any changes. They’ve shown time and again they are more willing to cater to the professional players who pick up and drop games without hesitation than actually embrace the Halo community. But here’s to hoping I’m wrong.
+1
The playlists are just labeled social so they can pretend they gave us what we want.
This exactly. I find my self trying to win in social just as often in ranked. Kd should not count towards arena kd and wins/losses should not count towards arena wins/losses.
I agree 100%, but from my experience, most people here just don’t get it. The general opinion seems to be that quitters should always be banned, which isn’t seeing the bigger picture. We really need a truly social playlist, as it would filter some of the quitters away from the ranked playlists and give casual players a better option.
It would also be nice to have a game that you can just jump into and fire at enemies, then put the pad down when you want. There are tons of games like this, and they’re good fun to play.
everything is just too fast paced, they need some bigger maps in their rotation than those shoeboxes they give us each update for arena. And if it’s too hard for them, search the community, I have seen forge labs and Halo 5 remakes that look spacey and superb that would be ideal for a slayer experience.

I don’t think map size has anything to do with it. The core of the issue is the super competitive player seeing this as an easy place to rack up stats. The try hards are like the Flood. The consume and infect everything they touch until the entire game is ruined.

Then how do you handle the bolded? If matchmaking serves to put players of equal skill together, than Social is nothing different from Ranked except for the no banhammer and no KDA/WL
You’ll still be fighting a team that’s just as good as you are, and be trying as hard to win as if you were ranked.
And then you have to deal with the change of “social” ranks. What if one person consistently does really bad, or really good?

that too. I have to agree with you on that, its a combination. and it all adds up to a ruined experience either way.

That’s exactly what social is supposed to be. People want to try hard to win that’s what arena is for. Taking out the win loss record will keep the try hards out as they will see it as a waste of time. So the ones that are left don’t care about winning or losing, they just want to play the game.

You deal with it by putting an equal amount of varying skill on both teams. If each team has all onyx’s, then it’s naturally going to turn into a sweat fest. One example of a solution would be to have 1 onyx, a couple platinums and then a gold and silver for each team. Each person on the team would have an equally skilled person on the opposite team. If that’s not a good solution, then take the formula from past Halos (H3, H4, Reach) and use that.
You would also separate the stats from arena and social or don’t count the stats in social. Currently, the social KDA affects your arena stats which only encourages people who care about their stats to go into sweat mode in social.
I completely agree. It’s impossible to enjoy a laid-back game in Halo 5 because stat-padders see social playlists and they think “easy targets.”
I agree with everything listed. No one wants to be a bullet sponge in social modes upon spawn.

Halo 3 had hidden ranks in Social.
Halo: Reach had no ranks, which meant that anyone could match anyone, which led to a lot of pubstomping.
All I have to do is get a group of friends and have the mentality of winning in social. Either I match anyone and pubstomp, or I match people my skill level and have it be ranked.
But then that team of players who have not-so-good friends will either get pubstomped, or just have the feeling of playing ranked without being able to be laid-back.

That’s the problem right there. Social shouldn’t be about winning mentality. Take that to arena. This is supposed to be a break from the super competitive mindset.
Pubstomping will always happen no matter what type of system is implemented, but it’s not going to happen every game which people make it out to be. I’d rather play more casual games with the occasional pub stomp or being on the receiving end of it rather than having to play in sweat mode every game or be on the respawn screen if I don’t.

Be careful what you wish for–you just might get it. In other words, you people demanded a social playlist with varying skill levels, right? The moment people said that, my prediction was that higher skilled players are going to have an easier time now that they are paired up with easier opponents to kill. This prediction has come true and I am enjoying every bit of the complaints (because I’m in my “I told you so” phase).
You people seem to think that just because a game has “social” in it, we’re going to play less competitively and more casually. Sorry to burst your bubble, but when game modes are about capping flags or scoring points in Grifball, people are going to play to win. That’s the whole point of the game itself. If people play competitively, so be it. To them, that’s their idea of having fun–having engaging matches and enjoying the experience.
If you want a true social experience, make the game modes themselves less competitive and more fun. In other words, Action Sack playlists, Infected modes. THOSE are the modes that are social. Otherwise, if you’ll get competition if the modes themselves are your basic CTF matches.
Yeah I’m not quite sure what you are looking for. Do people see social and think oh I’m not going to worry about winning? Regardless if there is no kd stat or not, people will still try to win and kill people won’t they? I don’t really understand this complaint, people will always try to win or get more kills then deaths regardless of the playlist.
I’m genuinely confused what people’s expectations of social are. I keep seeing this “I just want to kick back and relax” but what does that actually mean in a halo game?

Perhaps you should read points 2 and 3. If we take out the win loss and kd that will help.
I want a playlist where I don’t end up on the other end of a bunch of MLG wannabes thinking every match they play is a yoinking try out for HCS. I’m at the level I’m at. Why can’t I play a game with people at my same level? Why can’t I be at a level I should be at? Why must I have to be frustrated every single game by yoinking try hards? 343 isn’t driving the population away…this focus on pro gamers and pro gamer mindsets is. I love Halo but I don’t know how much more of this uber competitive I can take before I go do something else. My free time is short, if I can’t spend it having fun with Halo I’ll do something else. If enough of us casual people leave then all the sweaty try hards won’t have anyone to beat up on anymore.
