Why so much Firefight Matchmaking Lag?

Why exactly is there so much lag in Firefight Matchmaking sometimes? This might sound like a late-to-the-party question but I’ve never known why.

sounds good and all but Gears of War 2/3 do a better Horde than Halo does FF! I know Halo has more movement but still Gears do it far better.

Hopefully Halo 4 will have a near lagless Firefight online experience.
