Thesefourimageshave sparked my attention. Why? Well, they all happen after Infinity crashes of Requiem (and most likely after it takes off again), they feature a crashed ship that is most likely FUD, and the Covenant appear to not want us to get anywhere near it.
My question is, why? The FUD can’t be THAT important. I remember Frankie saying that Chief would be returning to FUD once or twice for weapons in an interview a long while back, but I always assumed this would be before we discover Infinity. Infinity is 3.5 miles long and has plenty of weapons, I don’t see much reason to return to the wreckage for more.
It’s always possible that this is one of the Frigates that Infinity carries around, and it wasn’t as fortunate as Infinity when it crashed. Two problems with that though. Infinity Likely had the Frigates dock with it again once they starting getting pulled into Requiem, and there doesn’t seem to be enough wreckage for that to be a full Frigate. Plus, this image shows a lot of large rock formations that look similar to the ones in the first 3 screenshots.
It could be any reason its impossible to tell at this point. There could be something on that wreckage that the humans need so the covies are gonna try and stop them.
Or it could even just be the humans have encountered the covies and the wreckage just so happens to be in that area the ship wreckage might not even be to neither of their concerns.
Maybe there is something of value there? Perhaps they need parts to repair something on the infinity that was damaged during the ship’s crash? Perhaps there’s some piece of tech they don’t want the Storm Covenant to get their hands on?
Your on a foreign and hostile world, so they would probably want to use it as a base of operations. The Covenant (Storm) would attack it because there are humans around and they plain don’t like that.
It’s a place where there would be supplies and shelter for humans so it would be important to them. Also they may have salvageable equipment that could help them get off Requiem.

But Storm isn’t really attacking, but defending. They have Wraiths stationed there, and in the past the Covenant hasn’t used Wraiths unless they were defending something of importance.

Infinity is a 3.5 mile long ship, plus the 2 Frigates that it can carry. If it doesn’t have something I doubt the back end of an outdated Frigate has it either.
We know a good deal about FUD, the only thing I can think of that Storm would want is Cortana and Chief, and they aren’t there.

Are you kidding? I spent most of my forum time today in a knock-down, drag-out fight over the impact that the Forerunner novels are likely to have on Halo 4. Plenty of people care about campaign around here, but the loudest voices are definitely people concerned with mechanics and MP.
As for why they would return to the Dawn… well, that looks like a Spartan Ops mission, which is supposed to take place six months after the end of the campaign. It’s more likely that it’s not the Dawn, but if it is, maybe they need to grab something? Or, perhaps, it’s just a coincidence that the mission takes place there.

My running theory right now is that these ships are some sort of heavy transport capable of carrying Mammoths down to the surface of Requiem. It might be that one of these ships could have crashed and the Chief needs to get to it to reach Lasky or another commanding officer. Just a theory (also could be the type of ship that Exile is made from).

That makes me wonder, is the Cole Protocol still relevant in the UNSC? I mean, the Covenant already knows Earth’s location.
Plus, I’m willing to bet Cortana did that before they landed on Requiem.

The images are fairly vague. There is nothing definitive showing that they are set up as defending or attacking. And the Covenant can easily use Wraiths for an assault. But from the look of the E3 demo Dawn is crashing with human occupants not many signs of escape pods so I would assume that the human forces engaging the Storm Covenant are coming out of the ship and acting as the defenders.
Also the Storm Covenant seem to be like the old school Covenant, humans and their technology is blasphemous and should all be destroyed.

That’s probably the best theory I’ve seen so far. I’ve always wondered how they got Mammoths down to the surface.

Wait… what? So you’re saying that the Spartan IV’s were already on FUD when it crashed? Correct me if I’m wrong.
Also, from these images the Covenant are definitely either defending, or they always get there before we do.

It might still be relevant, as there are colonies that survived the war untouched. Wouldn’t want to give away the locations to them.
Also M0a, where did you hear that the Infinity housed 2 Frigates?
