Why remixes?

I’m really curious about this. Why did 343i think it was a good idea? I’m not trying to hate either. Is it a money thing? Less R&D? Other than Eden and Empire all of the remixes seem to be pretty different from each other so I don’t think that can be it.

That’s honestly the only reason I can think of. People obviously don’t like them very much. Also, the fact that people have been voicing their complaints loudly and they still seem to be making them (Torque and the new map) makes it feel like all of these maps have been in development forever. They seemingly aren’t listening to the community at all when it comes to maps.

Because it means they can produce more in the long run.

Imagine this, instead of getting 9 maps. We’d be able to get 12 maps.

We are getting both things. And for some of these things, they can’t just make them on a dime. Takes longer planning, a roadmap if you will. Some things are planned in advance longer than others.

Overgrowth is really great for strongholds, but I wish they had plasma caster back.
Riptide would probably play super well on asymmetrical game types of there were some. But it’s a bit of a combat evolved style remix

The biggest issue with the remixes I think, the new ones at least, was the weapon placement I think.

They are probably cheaper to make since the remix has a pre-existing base to work off of and redesign. I don’t mind them in theory, but it feels like cheating in a way to say they made new maps. It’s true in a sense, but I get the distinct sense at times when I play on Riptide I’m just playing on a redesigned Fathom or when playing Overgrowth I’m playing on a grassier Plaza. Some might say cost is an issue in regards to why we don’t get original maps, but then I wonder just what the money from the REQ Packs that goes towards the REQs and maps is being used for then.

I’m starting to think that monthly updates were a horrible idea. If they did, say, an update every 3 months instead, and compiled all of the content from three months into one big update it would be 100x better IMO. Then getting two remixes in one pack wouldn’t feel as cheap, as they would both be new experiences. Same goes for Warzone maps. If they released the Assault varient and the normal varient at the same time it wouldn’t be a big deal, but because they have been separating them it makes the Assault varient seem cheap. Maybe that’s just me, I don’t know.

Now I’m stuck on this idea. Instead of a map or two every month, they should release a pair of remixes, and a pair of Warzone maps (normal and Assault) every 3. Then in the two months in-between updates they could focus more on playlist updates and adding community maps into the fold. Of course this would have required a different launch. Forge would have been there, and all of the pairs of remixes would have had to be there too, but I think this would be preferable to what we have now.

Ever play Metroid Prime 2? And how it had them light and dark worlds that were slightly different, but in such a way that the entire dynamic of each room would change? I think of remixes like that. I like them.

For some I think that works. But for some like Eden and Empire? Yeah, if I’m not paying attention I have a hard time noticing a difference.

-Yoink- Empire and Eden.

Now that I think about it, maybe they could make a decent remix of The Rig if they put the map on its side or another mobile rig machine on its side to encourage more vertical movement across the map. Think a big jungle gym. Maybe put molten slag on the bottom or set the map during a Covenant glassing.

You have maps like Overgrowth and Riptide which are loaded with their own unique assets, while many default maps recycle assets. If the point was to save resources, then that’s the exact opposite of what you want to do. The geometry of Riptide is also so significantly different it makes me wonder why they don’t go the full mile, surely that wouldn’t waste that much extra time.

I’m starting to think remixes don’t exist as a means of saving resources, but rather just as a sort of charming gimmick. Yet in the process they shoot themselves in the foot by limiting the kind of maps they can create.

How do I feel about remixes? I guess it depends on how well made they are. I’d say the differences between Riptide and Fathom are much more significant than the ones between Wizard and Derelict. But then you have maps like Eden and Empire where it’s like…you could’ve slightly altered the original map’s design, then made the same remix out of placing forge objects.

Ultimately though I still think it’s kind of lazy compared to making a map from the ground up, and the results tend to be lower quality than that approach.

I always thought a cool Rig remix would be if it took place in the belly of one of those sandworms, ala Gears 2.

This is the price for free update. Quality will take a hit.

I could maybe accept that argument if a good portion of the launch maps weren’t also remixes.

Then 343 suck with map design lol

One thing that helps to set a remix apart from it’s original is changing the setting.

If they did make a remix of The Rig, it would be nice if they gave it a Halo 3 Blackout setting, or maybe a constructiuon site at the top of a tower in a city?

From a gameplay perspective remixes play significantly different than their original version, (except Eden and Empire) with that in mind I do not have an issue with them. Although to other players I can see how similar art styles and assets cheapen the novelty of the map.

I like the remixes. They always play and look different enough from the original to keep me satisfied and it means they are able to release one every month.
If they’re just rearranging pre made sections of the map it means they don’t have to spend any time at all on modeling, which I assume is the most time consuming part. They can probably put a basic map together in a matter of days which gives them the rest of the month to focus on making it look beautiful. I think this is why Torque looks so aesthetically bare while Overgrown and Riptide look much more pleasing to the eye.
Whether you like it or not is up to you, but I think there are much more important things to dislike about the ‘free’ updates.
