Why Reach is the best Halo game.

With all its flaws, I’d still say Reach is my favorite Halo game. But it’s mainly my favorite because of the time it came out.

Reach came out my 9th grade year, and I had an enormous amount of free time to play it. It was during a time when I didn’t have a lot of friends and I wasn’t very happy. I had three really close friends, though, and we played the hell out of that game. I mean, we hyped it up so much, and to us, it passed those expectations.

We played every part of the game. Customs, campaign, multiplayer, firefight. Even after my friends signed off for the night, I still had an amazing time on my own searching through matchmaking.

Reach came out at the perfect time for me. One of the reasons, though I truly love the game and think it’s great, Halo 4 won’t have such a strong place in my heart is because it came out during an incredibly busy time for me. I was prepping for college. My three fiends and I hardly had time that we could all play together. The times we did play were great, but nothing could quite beat the feeling we all had with Reach.

I guess it helps me feel this way, too, that I may or may not have 52 totall days of play time online with Reach…

It’s crazy to think that a video game can have such a profound effect on you. But what Reach provided me and my friends, through an incredibly well crafted and and amazingly fun environment, was a connection. An outlet. A place to look forward to amidst the crappiness of early high school life. Calling Reach the best Halo game is an opinion, yeah. But because of this, I’m calling it the best.

Call it nostalgia. I don’t think it’s that, though. I’m not imagining Reach being great because of the memories so long ago. I know it’s great and I know it’s my favorite Halo game because of how happy it made me.

Hey man, I’m right there with ya. Although I only have a measly 22 days logged in comparison, it was perfect for me. The Beta came out the spring of my freshman year in college, and my modder roommate gained us early access to it, as we tore up on Powerhouse and Sword Base. The Plasma Launcher was so good on Sword Base that I got a double kill through a wall on it during the Beta, which then led us to dub it the “Jesus Gun” because of its supernatural power.

I dropped out of school following my freshman year because I couldn’t afford to go back, but I still remember at 12:05 AM on release “day” having a conference call with all my friends talking about how we all just picked up a copy at midnight and were so amped to play it the next day. I took two days off work, went through two cases of mountain dew, and had the Campaign beat by 6AM.

Even my friends who weren’t hardcore Halo gamers grabbed a copy of the game, and it quickly became the game of choice among our friends, usually having 5-6 players play every night or so, depending on schedules. Half of us even bought the legendary edition eventually, and we all sold the Flaming Helmet DLC on Ebay for more than we paid for the whole Edition.

The game certainly wasn’t perfect, but it was the first title to really bring us all together on Halo since Halo 2. We never had the enthusiasm for Halo 3 (probably because of CoD Modern Warfare 1 and 2), and out of the six of us, only two went on to buy Halo 4, a game that neither one of us has touched for some time. There was just something special about Reach.

Maybe it was the fact that it was simple enough for everyone to pick up quickly. The game is fast paced enough to keep up with the CoD style games, but slow enough and requires enough skill to still be a Halo title. Same goes for the maps, either they were Halo 2/CE remakes that we grew up with, or they were simple yet complex enough that new players could find their way around (Powerhouse, Boardwalk, Sword Base).

To this day, it’s the game that my friends and I will play if we have a weekend gaming afternoon. We’ll hop into the multi-team playlist and just pick up right where we left off. I agree, there is something about Reach, which is partially nostalgia, but partially that it’s just a solid game. Reach truly was and is special.

Reach came out my eighth grade year which was actually the perfect year to release reach, I had a very active friends list and the game was like the new halo 3. Forge was brought to a whole new level, player vs player was still the best. Campaign was awesome, graphics are still good compared to the new games that are out, if not 3x better.

But mainly, the game stuck with its origional roots, and that’s why people liked reach. Despite a few changes, reach in my opinion will always be the best halo. If you compare halo reach to halo 4, one game being 3 years older than the other, then compare populations, graphics, campaign, and abilities… Reach has halo 4 beat in all of these sections.

Reach set up a campaign that brought a whole new story and unfortunately, 343i dident develop that story for some reason and kept it to just that halo. And instead of playing as Master Chief, you play as the people who helped save humankind before master chiefs prime. The enemies were still the covenant, but bungie found a way to make it as if we were fighting the covenant from halo 3, but they made it better by still sticking with the origional enemies of halo but adding more conflict between the origional story.

Problem is, 343i rushed into new enemies without really setting up a proper introduction as to why the covenant just randomly dropped out of Halo 4, and the flood.

You should probably have gone with “Why Reach is My Favorite Halo” not “Why Reach is the Best Halo Game” based on your reasons given. If you were in 9th grade in 2001 Combat Evolved would be your favorite. That’s just how it works. You’re at your most impressionable at that age. That’s why I love CE so much, I was 16 when it released.

> Problem is, 343i rushed into new enemies without really setting up a proper introduction as to why the covenant just randomly dropped out of Halo 4, and the flood.

That “proper introduction” as to why the Flood is not in Halo 4 is what we like to refer to as “Halo 3”.

I discovered Reach a couple years ago, completely by accident looking for figures in power armor. I’m a collector, & a fan of power armor through years of anime, & have loved Iron Man since I was a kid. I’m 40 now with two kids of my own, & another on the way.
I was on one of the toy collector forums I frequent, & I came across the Halo thread, with photos some members had posted. DAMN! Did that armor look sweet! & It got me curious, so I looked up the games, dove into the lore & history, watched all the gameplay footage on youtube (I didn’t have an XB at the time) & was blown away. Reach quickly became my favorite, because I have to admit I’m also a lover of samurai movies, which often have heroes sacrificing themselves in a losing battle.
Well last month I got the chance to borrow an xbox 360 & a copy of Reach & spent the month in multiplayer. Even though the budget’s a little tight, the missus & I have decided to add a XB360 to the house. I’m most likely going to pick up the nextgen console after new years, & I can only hope that Halo 5 will be as good as Reach has been to play. I’ll be back online with you guys as soon as I can!

Though it did come out at an impressionable age, I don’t believe I would have had the same opinion if Halo 1, 2, or 3 came out at the time. It was more of the stars aligning, half being the time, and half being the evolution of Halo and my opinions and experience of that specific iteration.

“These relics belonged to an alien race called the Forerunners, who existed long before humanity (or even the Covenant races) had crawled from the primordial muck.”
From the character’s in the Halo universe’s POV this is true, but as this is a guide with facts ABOUT the Halo universe, I feel the need to correct you.
Humanity rose up to the same level as the Forerunners, and quickly colonized the Orion Arm. This was thousands of years before the Halos were fired. They ended up as allies with the San’Shyuum. The flood attacked, and with the help of the San’Shyuum they fought them off. That conflict led to a war with the Forerunners. Forerunners won, and the Didact(Big Brute looking fellow with a stick shoved up his tailpipe.) decided the Humans were to be stripped of their technology, and exiled to their homeworld.
In other words Humans WERE around when the Forerunners were.

Nobody killed the flood “once and for all”. They destroyed them temporarily. In fact, the flood aren’t even from the Milky Way. As far as I know, nobody’s ever found the source of the flood. Actually, the other Halo installations probably have specimens locked away…

Although maybe a sore subject, I can see the flood returning at some point. After all, the Forerunner weapons in Halo 4 (and referenced in the first game by Guilty Spark) were specifically designed to vaporize flood, which is why guns like the scattershot disintegrate whatever you shoot.

im sorry but you got a few facts wrong, namely that the Humans and the Profits once shared the Galaxy with the Forerunners, and the Human/Profit alliance were the first species to defeat the flood by sacrificing half there numbers to the flood when they infected them with a genetic condition that would destroy the flood, forcing a few survives outside the Galaxy who would later return to wipe out the Forerunners. however after that victory over the Flood humanity accidentally started to colonize Forerunner worlds, -Yoink!- them off, and due to there empire being weakened with the war against the Flood (that the Forerunners didn’t know about) they lost the ensuring war with the Forerunners and were technologically sent back to the stone-age as punishment, the same happened with the Profits and all there tec was destroyed to stop them from becoming a threat again. however the Flood reemerged and wiped out the Forerunners and since Humanity was the only species to successfully fight off the Flood they named them the reclaimers of all there tec, and some old human tec. however the Profits accessed Forerunner early sand mistranslated it causing all the events of Halo.
oh and the Jackal’s of the Covenant are mercenaries employed by the Profits, not a real part of the Covenant.

Great primer! I’ve sent this to my friends who aren’t familiar with the Halo lore. One note, I don’t think every spartan was outfitted with a Smart AI. For example, Naomi in The Thursday War was very uncomfortable with interfacing with Black Box (BB) because she had never done so. So while each spartan is able to interface with a Smart AI, I don’t believe it was standard to do so.

Really good stuff! But wasn’t Halsey the one to notice John’s luck? I remember something about her flipping a coin and having John guess what is was when he was a boy.

Possible Spoiler Warning:

There’s also been some potentially relevant developments in the novels, like the fact that prehistoric humans had a galactic empire that rivaled the forerunners and that these prehistoric humans fought a war with the forerunners and that the flood were originally released during this war oh and the flood was originally created by the precursors as a weapon against the forerunners.

Actually, John-117 isn’t the last known spartan alive. There are a handful of Spartan-II’s that are still known to be alive, such as Kelly-087, Frederic-104, and Linda-058. I think are a few more, and there could be some surviving Spartan-III’s.

A few errors. First, Tartarus is the Brute Chieftain, not the Elite (Elites don’t have Chieftains). Second, killing Gravemind didn’t kill the Flood, as the Flood is more akin to a virus than a hivemind. A Gravemind is created at a certain stage in Flood evolution to give them higher intelligence. Killing the Gravemind brought the Flood back to a lower level of intelligence, but they were still a serious threat because they still spread and stuff. Third, in the Haloverse, all smart AI are based off of a human (they normally use a dead person’s brain). So Cortana isn’t special in that regard, what makes her special is that she is made from the most brilliant mind in the universe. Oh, and while its not a mistake, I think it would be good to include that Sgt Johnson is a “Spartan-I” (part of the Orion project).

Anyway, aside from that, great article. I’m just a Haloverse junkie and so those things caught my eye. Normal people probably wouldn’t catch any of them though =P

Also Gray team was too far away to be recalled for the battle of reach so it’s implied they survived the war too. Jai, Adriana and Mike so it brings the total of spartans alive to probably around 7. Though I think Black Team’s fate is left in the air as well.

yeet

Hopefully they can add Reach to the MCC. Shoulda called it The Halo Collection.

My favorite malti player so far.

Even though I kinda came a bit late to the Halo Reach family (considering the fact I got it in 2013) I still seemed to enjoy it the most out of all the Halo games and now that its backwards compatible I realized how much fun it is and I still play it to this day!

Of all the Halo games I think Reah was the best. I arrived in Reach extremely late back in 2014 and didn’t really start playing the multiplayer until almost a year later. Before that time I was a Halo 4 sweaty. I liked 4’s matchmaking at first but then it just started to quickly grow boring and reptitive. So one day I finally played Reach’s matchmaking and I haven’t been able to stop playing it since.

If you have not played the main campa of halo reach, there are major spoilers in this paragraph, you have been warned.

In my personal opinion halo reach is the best halo game to date. (Jan. 2018) Although some people love Master Chief Because he is honestly a badass I will forever perfer noble 6 over him for the reason of sacrifice. All the members of the noble team (June is not confirmed) sacrifices their lives in order to win the war, only true soldiers do that. With every battle there is a loss, even your own character in the end. The final mission was always my favorite because at the time it was the only campaign I played that ended that way. For those who can’t remember or don’t mind spoilers, the mission before last ends by you staying back on the convent infested planet of reach in order to fire a large cannon so the ship of humans can safely leave (without you) and the final mission you are in a desert like wasteland fighting off the waves of stronger enemies until you finally die from and elite with an energy sword. The last cut scene you see is noble 6 (your character) taking off his broken helmet and collapsing. The wind blows the dust and it transitions to the helmet you see in the very beginning. This is the best form of foreshadowing in a game I’ve ever seen and it is for those reasons, halo reach was the best halo game there is.
